This exit poll is just...no words.

I don't think the damage was done by individual's or even political party's views on the EU.

It was the calling of the Referendum with no coherant narrative about the reasons to stay from any political party which gave Nigel Farage to push ahead with the most powerful piece of propaganda in recent years with his 'Breaking Point' image.

The UK cannot possibly be a 'nation no longer divided'; the EU Referendum accentuated and sharpened divisions that were more latent.

They - demonstrably - don't want your paternalistic "empathy" and are quite capable of making decisions in what they themselves deem to be in their own best interests.

I agree. This is a big problem with Labour- it no longer represents the working class, but seeks to tell them what's best for them in a rather patronising manner.

If you want a democracy, you have to accept that other people may have views you do not personally hold, and that you not sharing a viewpoint doesn't make that viewpoint any less valid.

That said, I mainly blame Corbyn.

AllideasAndNoAction · 13/12/2019 19:55

I knew it would be like this. Anyone who voted Tory should be fucking ashamed. Not that they will be because they don't give a shit about anyone else. I'm alright Jack fits the bill for most of them.

Yep. All those people in the Labour heartlands of the north. Ex-mining towns, dperessed post industrial areas. Wales. Wales FFS!

All a bunch of rich, self serving toffs out for themselves. Hmm

I know someone who votes Tory and also runs a foodbank. It really isn't that 'simple'.

AllideasAndNoAction · 14/12/2019 05:37

Of course it isn't Cactus. But people don't want to hear about your Tory friend who runs a food bank. It messes with thei perceptions and spoils their stories.

CherryPavlova · 14/12/2019 08:55

Our constituency is a Conservative stronghold. They had about 60% of the vote. Most of our neighbours and many of our friends voted blue.
The Lib Dem’s took an increased proportion of the vote from the Conservatives because there are a large number of remain supporters. Sadly not enough to win.

The Conservative voters locally aren’t intrinsically bad people generally (as opposed to Brexit Party supporters who are quite far right generally). They voted for the party that will preserve their personal affluence.

Unfortunately JC is unelectable. A tactical position of working with others to oust the Tories might have worked but he’s not very good at with people. He’s an agitator, he enjoys the battle but isn’t a leader. He also isn’t a remain supporter. He personally wants us out of Europe. He was never going to take a strong enough stance to overcome the catastrophic path we are being led down for the personal gain of some very rich Tory cronies. It is about personal gain of the few but that isn’t a story that has ever featured.

It has given the corrupt Johnson a clear mandate but it’s anything but democratic. It is a government built on shifting sand and false promises.

That tripe about forty new hospitals- nobody believes that, surely? Those 50k extra nurses - no one believes that, surely? It will be harder on the poor and just surviving than the Thatcher government.

ilovetinsel · 15/12/2019 23:06

The next five years are going to
be really tough.
If you voted tory & are going to be using the NHS, schools or social care. If you would like to have a well functioning police, ambulance, A&E, fire service - then you are an idiot. Whichever class you belong to. Simple. As. That.
🤷🏻‍♀️

Xenia · 16/12/2019 08:27

Those many of us who know the Tory policies will be better for Britain than Labour's are not idiots. That is a lot of people to accuse of idiocy.

If labour thinks it has a monopoly on cleverness then why was it unable to persuade the country to vote in Corbyn with the same majority the Tories achieved? Why did it not win in Scotland for example never mind in much of the UK?

thehorseandhisboy · 16/12/2019 12:51

I agree with Xenia (for the first time ever Smile).

Calling people 'idiots' isn't helpful to any discussion; people either disengage or become more entrenched in their position.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 16/12/2019 13:00

It's still so embarrassing that after being absolutely destroyed in an election there are still members of the labour party just branding people 'idiots'. Can you not hear yourself?
