What chips do I want for my steak?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 08/12/2019 10:51

My Christmas lunch will be steak and chips.

What chips?
(Oven bake, no fryer here, and cba with homemade)

I've tried the McCain Gastro Chips and they were ok but not as earth shattering as I'd been led to believe.

At the opposite end of the scale, Lidl Curly Fries were quite yummy.

Any other recommendations please? I can get to all the supermarkets fairly easily.

I like the Aldi specially selected chunky chips

Joopy · 08/12/2019 10:55

Sweet potato fries?

RougeVinEtFromage · 08/12/2019 12:53

I'm a sucker for curly fries but on the chip front I literally chop up a potato and drizzle oil, salt and peppers in the oven. So easy and SO much nicer than frozen. Saying that I quite like French fries too, McCain's I think.

Crispy potato slices are my fave with steak.
The ones from Lidl are good!

DartmoorChef · 08/12/2019 13:04

Mccains skin on fries are nice

AgeLikeWine · 08/12/2019 13:18

How about spicy potato wedges?

Chop some good unpeeled baking potatoes into wedges lengthways, chop a couple of red onions into chunks then put them together in a bowl with a lug of olive oil, ground cumin, paprika, oregano, S&P. Add chilli power to taste if you want. Mix well to lightly coat the wedges & onions with the spice mix. Chuck onto a baking tray then into the oven at 220 for about 20 mins or until the wedges are golden brown & the onions sweet.

A perfect accompaniment to steak or any grilled meat.

Waitrose do awesome chips in beef dripping that would go wonderfully with your steak

Feminazgul · 08/12/2019 13:25

Can I come to yours for Christmas Dinner 🤤

ClashCityRocker · 08/12/2019 13:31

I quite like the tesco Finest cornish seasalt ones. They're the best straight in an oven chip.

Although if you like the skin on (I do, Dh doesn't) its easy enough to chop a load of potatoes and put them in with a load of beef dripping, salt and pepper. Beef dripping makes everything taste amazing.

I've never been keen on oven chips but McCain shake shake fries are delicious

SinglePringle · 08/12/2019 14:03

I vote for the Sainsbury's Taste the Difference fat chips in beef dripping.

isseywith4vampirecats · 08/12/2019 14:25

potatoes cut into wedges with the skins on, on a tray salt and pepper to taste cajun spice and olive oil drizzle done in the oven till cooked and brown are ideal with steaks

PawPawNoodle · 08/12/2019 14:41

I do love the Gastro ones (are you cooking them correctly? They are delicious!) but otherwise I second the Sainsburys TTD beef dripping ones.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 08/12/2019 14:43

Thanks for the tips!

As per my OP, I don't want home made (or wedges).

I think I'll probably go for either then Waitrose or Sainsbury TTD ones in dripping - they will go with steak very nicely indeed! Although "Tesco Finest cornish seasalt" do sound nice too!

I'll put them all on the list and wherever I go for my shopping next, will pick up whatever option is possible!

Potatoe wedges!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 08/12/2019 14:45

Sorry missed the wedge hate

ClashCityRocker · 08/12/2019 14:47

Ooh, actually I do like the shake shake fries too.

But with steak it has to be fat chips for me.

Depends if you're a fry or chunky chip sort, I think.

Elzbells · 08/12/2019 15:12

My favourite are M&S triple fried chips from the freezer. They are really good.

Elzbells · 08/12/2019 15:14

I find the Tesco finest ones don't crisp up enough but they are good if your a fan of chip shop chips. They have a similar texture.

I prefer ones with a bit of a crunch which the M&S ones do perfectly.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/12/2019 15:15

The Tesco finest ones are good, the fresh ones with the ready meals.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/12/2019 15:16

Ha, cross post with you ElzbellsGrin

Toddlerteaplease · 08/12/2019 15:22

Steal and chips for Christmas dinner! Awesome, can I come?

MrsFionaCharming · 08/12/2019 15:23

The sliced potato ones from the veg section at Tesco. I could eat 3 packets in a row.

BiteyShark · 08/12/2019 15:24

I would try a few out before committing yourself Grin.

One of the best Xmas dinners I have had when I lived on my own was steak and chips. Bloody lovely it was.

Fredastaireatemyjamsandwich · 08/12/2019 15:35

Marks and spencer twice cooked chips, from the gastro pub range.
