What chips do I want for my steak?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 08/12/2019 10:51

My Christmas lunch will be steak and chips.

What chips?
(Oven bake, no fryer here, and cba with homemade)

I've tried the McCain Gastro Chips and they were ok but not as earth shattering as I'd been led to believe.

At the opposite end of the scale, Lidl Curly Fries were quite yummy.

Any other recommendations please? I can get to all the supermarkets fairly easily.

Asda and Waitrose both do lovely beef dripping chips. Add some proper onion rings too!

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 08/12/2019 17:58

gerbo yes to sauce recipe please!!

OP you don't need to explain. Sounds lovely anyway but that comment was spiteful and unnecessary of her.

Redazzy · 08/12/2019 18:01

Sounds like the perfect solo treat for Christmas Day. Late to the party, but I have to say, steak cut chips from Tesco or Aldi have been a huge hit with my family recently. The trick is to cook them in a very hot oven (200C), spread thinly on a baking tray. Really delicious with some pepper sauce (Tesco, from the meat section). Have a lovely Christmas OP.

We are having steak and chips on Boxing Day so may have to try out some of these suggestions for the chips Grin

Ignore the comment about it being an 'every day' meal. I haven't had a turkey roast meal on Xmas day for years and given how popular the local Indian is for both eat in and takeout on Xmas day a lot of other people think the same.

CareOfPunts · 08/12/2019 18:05

I wouldn’t have oven chips with a nice steak but the Aldi chunky ones are OK.

Make plenty so you have lots to dip the pepper sauce into. Delish!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 08/12/2019 18:06

Ooh onion rings, good shout!

And yy to the sauce recipe please Grin

I'm thinking:
Steak (with that sauce or my own xxxxtra garlic butter)
Chips
Peas
Onion rings
Maybe even a bit of readymade shop dauphinoise too!

To dip into the pepper sauce, doh!

BiteyShark · 08/12/2019 18:08

I love baked mushrooms as well as onion rings with my steak.

Buyitinbamboo · 08/12/2019 18:11

Potato smilies

Shockers · 08/12/2019 18:12

Chop salad potatoes in half, toss in chilli oil, sprinkle with coarse salt and pepper and bake for 20-25 minutes.

Minimal effort and loads nicer than frozen chips!

Redact · 08/12/2019 18:16

M&S triple cooked chips and beer battered onion rings in the freezer section, delicious. Or I once had alpine fries at a steak restaurant. They were like a potato Rosti cut into fries. I have tried to recreate it but ended up with small rostis, delicious and not a lot work really, I should make them more often!

Redact · 08/12/2019 18:18

Or homemade potato gratin, really easy to make and throw in the oven

inwood · 08/12/2019 18:21

Sainsbury's rustic fries

Mabbers · 08/12/2019 18:22

I love love love steak cut oven chips, far more than fried chips. I get I might not be your audience as that's a bit niche but I love Aldi steak cut chips.

Whoever judges this plan is a dick. Xmas day is surely about whatever you want it to be. I know some people who go out for a curry - sounds amazing.

HisBetterHalf · 08/12/2019 18:26

M&S or Sainsburys triple fried

ReginaGeorgeous · 08/12/2019 18:28

Oooh you definitely want the Waitrose dripping ones, lovely. Onion rings, peas and a big flat mushroom too. And a nice bottle of red.
You've made me want a steak now!

ineedto · 08/12/2019 18:28

Sainsbury's rustic frozen chips. 3 min before removing from the oven sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and bake until crispy! Xmas Wink

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 08/12/2019 18:28

To clarify, I really don't want wedges or home made chips. I do that often enough on normal days. (I also can't easily replicate the taste of home fries/beer batter/beef dripping without a lot of faff.)

Chilled/frozen > oven > plate > gob is exactly the amount of effort I want to go to for one day a year.

You are absolutely right, I am just narrow minded and dont understand it I guess. I love the sound of chinese and cheese board though, that's my kind of food. I am sorry for any offence caused, I don't always state what I mean very well. I wish you the best christmas ever, you enjoy it your way. X

Personal insults and name calling is always unnecessary!

helpfulperson · 08/12/2019 18:36

I know you just want no effort but the sprinkling with parmesan does sound like it might be worth it. I've never thought of that but am dying to try it.

loutypips · 08/12/2019 18:38

I think the curly fries tend to be nicer than regular oven chips.

Forgotmy · 08/12/2019 18:40

Big tip from a veteran here, but many will go OMG I am sure!

I always zap the frozen chips of whatever size and shape in the micro for a minute. They cook in no time, are fluffy and crispy after 20 mins in the oven.

I'm never happy that frozen oven chips will cook inside properly after many a disaster and disappointment. So this is my solve all solution!

Merry Christmas.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/12/2019 18:52

@Forgotmy so blast in microwave then cook in oven?

DartmoorChef · 08/12/2019 18:53

I let frozen chips defrost prior to cooking, although I use a deep fat fryer too Grin
