What chips do I want for my steak?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 08/12/2019 10:51

My Christmas lunch will be steak and chips.

What chips?
(Oven bake, no fryer here, and cba with homemade)

I've tried the McCain Gastro Chips and they were ok but not as earth shattering as I'd been led to believe.

At the opposite end of the scale, Lidl Curly Fries were quite yummy.

Any other recommendations please? I can get to all the supermarkets fairly easily.

Looks like my dinner table needs more place settings!

I may not be helping here but I did manage to get several very nice steaks reduced, so there are several lurking in the freezer Grin

I would try a few out before committing yourself grin.
Wise words, very wise....

We have beef and Guinness casserole and slow baked potatoes on Christmas Day ( just DH and I) as I am working Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Can’t wait!

Blankiefan · 08/12/2019 16:08

Mccain Home Chips are very good. Even the Light ones are good.

Why on earth would you want an everyday meal for your Christmas lunch? Each to their own but I have no understanding of this and oven chips to boot, sorry but yuk! I am having steak today, Christmas is about spoiling your family, looking after everyone and having them leave still thinking about the delicious meal they were treated to!

EvaHarknessRose · 08/12/2019 16:11

Pah not after hosting a dozen or more people for fifteen years it isn't. Sounds lovely op.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/12/2019 16:39

Surely Christmas is about whatever you want it to be about.
We are having a buffet on Boxing day, Chinese Takeaway the day after and then leftovers with a huge cheese board the following day.
That is our Christmas as Dd is spending the actual day with her bf, and I'll be on my own, and I'm perfectly happy with it.

M&s triple cooked in beef fat....

blackteaplease · 08/12/2019 16:43

Steak isn't an everyday food in my house. Special occasions only.

I'd agree with the Tesco finest sea salt ones but also the waitrose skinny fries are pretty nice too.

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 08/12/2019 16:47

Ooh, another vote for the sliced battered ones from the fresh veg aisle! Utterly slutty and wonderful!

OP we are having steak and chips this year, as requested by the children!

I'm going homemade but simple- these are delicious- (Faye Ripley recipe)
Peel and cut lots of chips (Maris)
Preheat two trays in oven, both with 1 or two tablespoons of veg oil on,at 180 fan.
Par boil chips for 5 mins. Drain well, let dry for five, then toss in hot oil.
Roast for 30-40. Shake halfway.

If they're soft after parboil they have lovely crispy edges.

We will have three courses, spread through the day, and gave the steak with a 'cheats' bearnaise sauce. Yum.

Much easier than a roast!

gerbo · 08/12/2019 16:59

Ps can pass on sauce recipe if needed!

userxx · 08/12/2019 17:07

Aldi Maris piper oven chips are amazing. They need 10 minutes longer than stated though.

helpfulperson · 08/12/2019 17:27

Lidl crinkle cut are nice and give it a bernie steakhouse vibe. But do need cooking a few minutes longer than instructions.

DameXanaduBramble · 08/12/2019 17:29

We ALWAYS have the beef dripping ones from Waitrose with steak. In the fresh section, they beat all others hands down

DameXanaduBramble · 08/12/2019 17:31

Oh give over, @axl1977. Unless you’re invited to the op for your Christmas dinner then wind your neck in, she was asking about chips, not whether or not you approve.

AltheaVestr1t · 08/12/2019 17:32

Another vote for Waitrose chips with beef dripping!

OneKeyAtATime · 08/12/2019 17:36

@Axl1977
Isn't Christmas dinner basically Sunday dinner though?

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/12/2019 17:46

Steak is a treat food here too, decent steak is expensive.

I live alone/will be alone for Christmas and this is my choice of easy to prep, cook and clear up, tasty meal. Your comment is insufferably rude and your pity is neither wanted or necessary.

Merry Christmas.
