Cancelling Sky. What now?

I'm just on hold to Sky after another ridiculous bill. I'm ready to cancel unless they offer me something quite special. I will get pay as you go Sky Sports through our Now TV dongle. Should I buy a Smart TV? Any other good TV and Broadband packages? I'm a bit stuck in the noughties so I don't know what the best alternative is. Been used to having phone/broadband/TV all through Sky for the last 10 years

We use Now for broadband and phone (currently on an £18 a month 12-month deal - when that expires, I'll be calling up to negotiate another cheap deal) then a combo of Amazon prime video & Netflix & Now TV.

We do have a smart TV but you can just buy a fire stick from Amazon (there will be a Black Friday deal on those at the moment as there always are) to get the apps you need.

OhWifey · 27/11/2019 12:53

So with the fire stick do I just plug it in then use my current remote control etc?

[still on hold. It's like they don't want me to cancel]

We usually last about 2 weeks with Freeview, then we go back to Sky - only once had an offer, and we've been with them for 22 years. No loyalty discount, nothing.

My Dad has got BT TV and it's truly horrendous. However FIL had Virgin Media and that box was amazing, I'd say it was an equivalent to Sky but unfortunately we live rurally and can't get it.

OhWifey · 27/11/2019 12:59

Yeah no Virgin available here either. It's Sky or BT and there's not a chance I'm going back to BT.

[still on hold]

We go with whoever’s got the best deal for broadband & then have now tv & Netflix.

Try cancelling your now tv passes occasionally, they usually offer you a cheaper deal to stay.
The entertainment pass currently costs me £1.60 a month instead of £8.99. Smile

PhoneLock · 27/11/2019 12:59

We cancelled Sky about a year ago and just use Freeview and Amazon Prime now. A smart TV will help but you can buy add on boxes for a "dumb" TV, as already said.

DH had had it for 20 years and was worried that he would miss his favourite channels. He hasn't at all and is happier knowing that there is £40 staying in the bank every month.

Note that the Sky box still works as a Freesat box when you leave Sky. We sometimes have to use that for HD channels when its raining as we are a long way from the nearest TV transmitter.

Really helpful - am plucking up the courage!!

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 27/11/2019 13:03

We ll be doing the same in a couple of weeks - between Sky and BT we are paging £150 per month! We re found to cancel and go with virgin

OhWifey · 27/11/2019 13:05

Just discussing my 'options' now. Sky essentials is actually a pretty good deal as it's £26 for broadband and phone including calls but can't add sky sports

Got rid of sky about 3 years ago. I bought a Humax satellite box that records tv programmes from the Sky dish, not dis-similar to the sky box. No further monthly payments, it's all free. Grin

However, I also decided to subscribe to Netflix for a tenner a month and I get Amazon tv through my Prime subscription but it's still all cheaper than Sky.

We're not Sports fans so I don't know if that makes a difference?

PhoneLock · 27/11/2019 13:05

My Dad has got BT TV and it's truly horrendous

I've just remembered that we have BT TV box, that's what we access Prime and Freeview through.

It works really well. Certainly well enough for us to not want to go back to Sky.

Emelene · 27/11/2019 13:07

We got rid of Sky, use the Xbox apps to access iplayer and prime etc and just pay for broadband. Much better.😊

MotherHeggy · 27/11/2019 13:16

No,it comes with it's on remote. You just need your tv remote to select the port that the tv stick is plugged into. I love my fire tv stick,I use it more than the tv channels.

OhWifey · 27/11/2019 13:17

He's talking a good game. But I'm still going to quit!

ajandjjmum · 27/11/2019 13:17

Sky have offered deals when I've phoned them to cancel on several occasions.

We need Sky Sport, so don't actually think there is any real option.

GrumpyHoonMain · 27/11/2019 13:19

Can you get Virgin? If so consider them - they often have better offers for sky sports packages

OhWifey · 27/11/2019 13:20

Can't get Virgin. Just looking online. Can get Now TV broadband with calls for £18 per month plus Sky sports for £20 for the first six months. It's a no brainer. But I'll miss the ability to record stuff. If I miss Sky I could always go back for a new customer deal

PlausibleSuit · 27/11/2019 13:24

I cancelled Sky years ago. We have Netflix, Amazon Prime and now Apple TV+ which works well for us. And we go for more walks in the evenings Grin

Homemadearmy · 27/11/2019 13:24

We quit sky about 5 years ago, we mainly watched kids TV and e4 for me that's free anyway. We now have Netflix and a fire stick. I'm still using the sky box for the free channels. Sky offered lots of great deal to stay. But we left anyway. The only thing I miss is the live pause.

GrumpyHoonMain · 27/11/2019 13:26

Do Now TV allow catch up services via their app? Also would Sky allow use of their mobile app if you subscribed via Now? If so you probably won’t miss recording.

MulticolourMophead · 27/11/2019 13:29

I have set DD with the task of researching alternatives to Sky.

Now TV is up on the list, but also EE. As a current EE customer for a mobile phone, there's an offer for broadband with or without TV, that includes an extra 5GB data for my mobile each month.

We don't watch masses of TV; I do have Amazon Prime. So could be interesting looking at deals right now.

TheYear · 27/11/2019 13:30

If I miss Sky I could always go back for a new customer deal

Only after 12 months

Chunkers · 27/11/2019 13:47

When I quit Sky, way back now, but I got to keep the box and got a freesat for sky card £20 odd quid which meant I could still record and get freeview channels.

Dandelion1993 · 27/11/2019 13:47

Fire stick is brilliant! We cancelled out TV packages and just use that. Only pay for Netflix now.

hsegfiugseskufh · 27/11/2019 13:48

we have whoever is cheapest for broadband (currently talk talk) and Now TV sports pass (occasionally pay for entertainment pass if there is something I want to watch - like a pp said they will offer you it cheaper every so often)

we had sky prev and thought we'd miss pausing and recording but we don't to be honest.
