Would you vote Labour if you earned over £80,000?

NoMansGE · 15/11/2019 10:52

When doing more research on labours tax policies DH and I noticed that this starts from salaries of £80,000. This would effect our household as that is DHs salary. We both agree with their campaign for 'no more billionaires'.. but we aren't billionaires. We are a normal family who live a comfortable but far from luxury lifestyle. We're both torn how to vote, as it would usually be labour.

obvious hypocrisy that JC is constantly criticised as is the LP when no such forensic examination of the Tories is occurring.

What is the Tory equivalent to what happened to Luciana Berger?

Obviously there are horrendous issues with racism in the Tory party (not least with Johnson) but trying to frame legitimate concerns as some smear against the Labour Party can just fuck right off.

RonaldMcDonald · 16/11/2019 14:28

I earn considerably more than that and will again vote Labour
I have more than enough and anyone bleating about 80k being only just enough needs a readjustment in their thinking and spending

FriedasCarLoad I donate to Hope Not Hate, which has been fighting anti-semitism for years and is partly responsible for the recent successful conviction of a member of a neo-Nazi group who was planning to murder a Rosie Cooper MP and a female police officer. They worked with a whistleblower who became a mole and stayed inside the neo-Nazi group, so this is hardcore stuff.

Hope Not Hate is also anti-facist (which can make it unpopular among those who benefit from the growth of the far right but like to keep their own hands looking cleanHmm), but it works against antisemitism across the spectrum.

@Smilethoyourheartisbreaking
You only hear what you want to

Yeah - I really want to hear that the party I was brought up within, that I was a member of, has become institutionally riddled with racism bringign out the oldest tropes that have historically been used to incite genocide and pogroms against my people for hundreds of years.

Just fucking great to hear that.

I agree with @noblegiraffe . You've successfully derailed, whatabouted, & taken over this thread. Well fucking done.
I can't say anything I'd actually like to to you because i'd get banned, but you have done a great job of undoing the positivity & support that was being shown towards minorities on this thread.

Your username fucking stinks.

noblegiraffe · 16/11/2019 14:41

Smile Luciana Berger is a Jewish MP who was hounded out of the party by antisemites within the party. While she was massively pregnant.

I’ve already said that there are massive problems with racism in the Tory party and I’m never going to vote for them.

But your article about Matt Hancock isn’t about the hounding out of one of their own MPs.

Therarestone · 16/11/2019 14:46

£80k is a lot more the further North you get. It really doesn't get you much in a lot of places.

Dapplegrey · 16/11/2019 15:01

Judge all politicians in the same way

Smile - do you really judge Tory politicians in the same way as you judge Labour ones?
Given your repeated criticisms of Tories I think that’s unlikely.

Morgomargot · 16/11/2019 15:23

@duchessmustard I feel that it is a problem inherent amongst lefties. Problems are not always black and white, and they need to be discussed in order to understand the issue and find a good solution, but what I find the left doing is shutting down people who try to discuss issues by brandishing insults. I can't believe after the Brexit vote they didn't stop to ask why so many life long labour supporters had voted leave. They didn't ask the question they just branded them all racists. I find it laughable when they are presented with proof of prejudice in the party they find it just as easy to turn a blind eye and bury their head in the sand. This is my biggest problem with the far left. They are so idealistic that they are happy to bury there heads in the sand, all the while spouting idealistic nonsense that in one instance branded their voters racists and in another refused to recognise the same type of prejudice within their own party. It's pathetic and to me speaks of much wider problems. I would consider myself to be slightly left of centre in my political view so I'm not looking at this from the view of right wing politics. The current old Labour party need to be defeated to being about some positive change. I really feel more dislike for them than the Tories at the moment because I hold them responsible for there being such a weak opposition, and having to vote in yet another election where there is no positive choice to make.

Vegheaven · 16/11/2019 16:26

DH earns quite a bit more than this - we have never voted Tory!
We have voted Labour most often and tactically we will vote Lib Dem but we are more closely aligned with New Labour approach. I feel the distribution of wealth in the UK is completely screwed, investment is needed to provide opportunities to the less well off.

CendrillonSings · 16/11/2019 16:33

Smilethoyourheartisbreaking

So will you be voting for the antisemitic Labour party and encouraging others to vote for them?

Legomadx2 · 16/11/2019 16:41

Very well said @DuchessMustard

Loopytiles · 16/11/2019 16:41

Not voting Labour under Corbyn/Momentum.

Loopytiles · 16/11/2019 16:42

Don’t earn £80k though, sadly!

Stripyhoglets1 · 16/11/2019 16:46

Yes I would. Don't agree with everything they want to spend it on but beleive they are better for a decent society than Tory.
I'd vote for them now if I had to pay £8 a week more tax on my current salary which is considerably less than 80k

YouJustDoYou · 16/11/2019 18:03

Can you imagine the furor had the Labour party taken the piss out of/sung songs about/liked pages that included transphobic posts? Why is transphobia not ok, but anti-Semitism is fair game? Those voting labour need to search their souls. I Am disgusted that in this day and age, that the Jewish people are STILL fair game. There are STILL not harsh enough repurcussions for tbis kind of prejudice. And yet even utter anything close to something transphobic? Hounded by the press and police, taken to court etc. But anything anti-jewish?? Nah, that's excusable right? As long as you get your increase in benefits, broadband, free long-term, your consciousness can allow/ignore the anti-Semitism, because it benefits you? Disgusting.

opinionatedfreak · 16/11/2019 19:56

I earn more than this and am unafraid of extra tax.

Austerity has killed children. I want to change this. Childhood morbidity and mortality by family income is shocking.

And as for the bollocks about high earners getting everywhere on merit...do go and take a closer look! I went to state school and got into a high performing university to do a competitive course.....

But: I’m white
I grew up in a naice middle class suburb so the state school I attended was pretty high achieving.
I had interested educated parents who took me on lots of day trips and theatre type visits
Books were always part of our home life (albeit often from the library)
My parents social network provided lots of work experience/back page of CV activities.
There was money for music lessons/travel to hockey matches etc.

It wasn’t luck that has made my siblings and I achieve it was good genes and an environment that helped bring out the best in us.

Abc123def · 16/11/2019 20:08

It’s not 80K, it’s actually 82K that the tax starts from. It would cost you around £8 a week from 82K and increases as your salary increases. If you both earn 82K it’s £16 a week increase. If you think you can’t spare £8.33 a week for a better society then you’re selfish with no morals at all.

There seem to be two separate conversations going on on this thread. Perhaps the posters who are so eager to tell us how keen they are to pay more tax, could also explain why they're happy to vote for a party who bullied two female Jewish mps so badly that they had to leave. Does it really not bother them that Luciana Berger had to have police protection at the 2018 Labour party conference?

YouJustDoYou · 16/11/2019 20:57

It's fucking luck and grit for many others. Just because you had fortune doesn't mean everyone did.

YouJustDoYou · 16/11/2019 20:58

And saying it was "good genes and an environment that helped bring out the best in you" WAS FUCKING LUCK. Jesus Christ.
