Would you vote Labour if you earned over £80,000?

NoMansGE · 15/11/2019 10:52

When doing more research on labours tax policies DH and I noticed that this starts from salaries of £80,000. This would effect our household as that is DHs salary. We both agree with their campaign for 'no more billionaires'.. but we aren't billionaires. We are a normal family who live a comfortable but far from luxury lifestyle. We're both torn how to vote, as it would usually be labour.

The Conservatives have had nine years to sort out the "wasteful" departments

Oh they banged on about ‘waste’ in the education sector too. They had people go round schools and make suggestions as to how to cut costs.

Suggestions came out like ‘serve smaller portions in the canteen’ and ‘replace experienced staff with cheap newbies’.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 16/11/2019 10:05

People need to pay attention. He is making it very clear where he stands. He is not a believer in liberal democracy or even any kind of democracy

See how he, McDonnell, mccluskey, milne etc. Have seized the power in the labour party & will NEVER relinquish it

I agree he’s dangerous, or would be if he could get the power. But I don’t think he can get a majority and he’d have a hard time getting his worrying policies through Parliament anyway. (However, I’ve just remembered the Government has given itself Henry VIII powers, so I may be more worried...)

If I thought Labour could win a majority I wouldn’t vote for them. It’s madness.

zsazsajuju · 16/11/2019 10:09

@DuchessMustard totally agree re Morales. JC has form too for continually supporting these kinds of politicians, regardless of facts. It’s dogma an ideology over people. It’s where his anti-semitism comes from too imo. He’s not fit to lead and John McDonnell is not fir to be chancellor.

Notonthestairs · 16/11/2019 10:15

Who is fit in your mind zaszasjuju?

VeryGenuinequestions · 16/11/2019 10:18

Sunglasses I agree.

Everything needs looking at. Even out sourcing cleaning has caused massive issues. I sat on ward with my daughter, the same chip was under her bed on arrival and still there when we left having watched lack lustre chatting useless cleaners aimlessly clean the floor. If they were still under ward, hospital jurisdiction it would be far easier to get a grip on them and either get them cleaning properly or fire them.

Also weet abix branded breakfast? I can't afford weet abix we buy supermarkets own brand. How the hell do NHS pay for it? Small things like this add up to waste of hundreds and thousands per year.

Am I happy for more of my precious money going to buy branded weet abix I can't personally afford to buy?

No.

Am I happy to pay more to a slick, well run NHS that functions well... Yes.

But I want it over hauled first and other working models like Germany consulted first.

VeryGenuinequestions · 16/11/2019 10:21

Flower, every party has racism issues and some have been vicious about lazy white British workers.

We've seen nothing like what's going on right now in labour, nothing. It's extraordinary.

towers14 · 16/11/2019 11:00

Nothing on earth would make me vote for the weasel JC or the Labour Party for that matter. Dh and I having a daily laugh at all the wonderful changes Labour will bring in. Free high speed broadband for everyone🤣

Dapplegrey · 16/11/2019 11:30

& see his unquestioning support for Putin,

I’ve never understood Corbyn’s support for Putin. Yes, I know he was a KGB operative in Dresden, but he’s hardly a communist now and some of the richest people in the world are Russians.

user1497207191 · 16/11/2019 11:42

Because you would have to be 100% economically-illiterate to believe that a small tax rise could possibly pay for Labour’s gigantic giveaways.

Like the economic illiteracy of Blair/Brown's "extra 1% NIC to save the NHS" - well that worked didn't it? It worked so well, they increased NIC by another 1% a year or two later. In reality, they spent far more than the extra NIC would ever bring in, so actually made things worse by piling on more debt via PFI etc. They definitely need to invest in a better calculator!

Doingtheboxerbeat · 16/11/2019 11:50

I was debating whether to start a thread about my wilful ignorance of the anti - semitism issue in the Labour Party, then thought better of it.
When I think of Jewish people, I think of Gwyneth Paltrow and Natalie Portman and countless other incredibly famous people who aren't likely to be assaulted on public transport /out walking their children to school, because of their faith. I managed somehow to conviently forget about the holocaust, the swastika graffitied graves and after reading this thread, I feel sick. I'm sorry for my lack of sensitivity.

I really wanted to vote Labour to end austerity, universal credit etc but ignoring this is like the boiling frog in slow motion.
I obviously need a rethink.

Morgomargot · 16/11/2019 12:00

@DuchessMustard I'm not Jewish and I won't be voting for labour based partly on their anti Jewish sentiments. If you feel that no one else other than Jews cares then I'm sad you feel like that but it's not true. There are loads of posts on here mentioning that they can't vote for Labour because of this.

FriedasCarLoad · 16/11/2019 12:20

I wrote a letter of support to one of the Jewish MPs who have been a target of anti-semitism. And I speak out against it in conversations.

But it’s so little. And I do care.

I can’t resign membership (not a member) nor make it clear they’ve lost my vote for it (I wouldn’t vote for their current policies anyway).

Does anyone who knows better than I do have any suggestions for what we can do to help fight antisemitism - in the Labour Party and elsewhere?

CendrillonSings · 16/11/2019 12:28

I think it’s so important just to tell the truth about the antisemitism in Corbyn’s Labour, that went from “minimal” to “virulent” in just a few years of his leadership. That’s not normal, and it’s not OK.

YouJustDoYou · 16/11/2019 12:29

^This. When Jewish friends are saying they feel intimidated and hugely disappointed that people want to vote for a party based solely on empty promises of endless free money for everyone etc, it's disgusting they're made to feel like this. A vote for Labour is a vote for anti-Semitism, and I cannot believe people happily back them knowing what institutionally they are like as a party.

Thank you so much, very sincerely. I have read & acknowledged those posts & they have definitely given me a glimmer of hope. It is so reassuring to know that there are good people out there - and quite a few of them if this thread is representative.

I just wish the country as a whole would send a strong message that it's not OK. I wish Labour MPs had been stronger & braver in standing up for what is right, & not their own careers. (it might have even benefited their careers in the long term)

Nick Griffin, Tommy Robinson et. al. are - absolutely rightly -considered to be pariahs & beyond the pale of decent society, I don't understand how another institutionally racist leader can have so many people excusing/ignoring/championing it.

@FriedasCarLoad @CendrillonSings @YouJustDoYou @Doingtheboxerbeat @VeryGenuinequestions thank you for your principles & solidarity & support. It gives me strength to keep on fighting - hadn't been able to face reading any of the previous threads around this topic but it feels like a last gasp attempt to speak out.

noblegiraffe · 16/11/2019 14:13

Johnson is a proven racist. Does that help everyone's voting decision. Or doesnt it count if it's against Muslims and Blacks?

Other options are available.

DuchessMustard · 16/11/2019 14:15

@WiseUpJanetWeiss I think Corbyn & his lot have made it crystal clear through the way they've controlled the internal procedures of the party, & their foreign allegiances, how they would run the country if they got into power. GOD FORBID.

They've changed all the election procedures, rigged the NEC, viciously hounded out & turned on anyone perceived as a 'traitor', put their lovers & relatives into all of the top positions. (Laura Murray!)

I don't believe they would ever willingly give up power. It would be like Morales - changing the constitution illegally, vote rigging, dictatorship. I know we all feel like it couldn't happen here, but we've never had an extremist government before who openly supports dictators, censorship & control in this way.

DuchessMustard · 16/11/2019 14:18

@Smilethoyourheartisbreaking Johnson is a proven racist. Does that help everyone's voting decision. Or doesnt it count if it's against Muslims and Blacks?

I realise you're trying to hijack the thread with your repeated whataboutery, even though many, many posters have said very clearly that they believe Johnson is also a racist.

And your implication that being opposed to antisemitism = being OK with racism against Muslims and Black people is extraordinarily offensive & rude as well as massively ignorant.

The people I know who are GENUINELY opposed to racism - as opposed to those who don't give a shit and are just trying to score political points - are opposed to ALL racism - against Jews, Muslims, Black people, Asian people, anyone who is persecuted for their ethnicity/faith/heritage.

I'm personally involved in several Jewish-Muslim interfaith initiatives. We recognise that the same people who are prepared to throw one minority under the bus would do it to any other group or person who got in their way.

Your accusations are insulting and disgusting.

VillageFete · 16/11/2019 14:22

Yes and yes - 1000000000 times over YES.

The hatred I have for the current dickheads in charge is immeasurable. Look at the state we are in. Look at the bloody NHS Angry My GP actually asked me who I was voting for the other day when I questioned waiting times for an urgent appointment. When I said “Labour, of course” He simply said “Good” But I could genuinely see despair in his face, he looked absolutely gutted when talking to me about the length of time I have to wait for an appointment.

This Government has pushed ordinary, working people to their absolute limits. Hardworking people cannot afford to feed their families. Foodbank use is sky rocketing. Services are being cut left, right and centre.

I cannot stomach the “As long as i’m alright Jack” attitude. Every Tory voter i’ve encountered has this attitude. They are also INCREDIBLY misguided and believe the bullshit billionaire propaganda rags as if it were Gospel. They believe desperate people are the problem, they just can’t see that them bastards at the top are.

It’s time for change. Tories have had their fair crack of the whip and they’ve crippled this Country in my opinion.

As someone who will be worse off financially under a Labour Government, i’d still vote for them any day of the week. I want my tax/NI to fund services, education, and the NHS. I want a fairer society for all. I want change. I am MORE than happy to contribute my fair share to that.

I have baby brain, i’m exhausted and i’m really not well, I cannot engage in a debate, but this is my two pence worth.
