Would you vote Labour if you earned over £80,000?

NoMansGE · 15/11/2019 10:52

When doing more research on labours tax policies DH and I noticed that this starts from salaries of £80,000. This would effect our household as that is DHs salary. We both agree with their campaign for 'no more billionaires'.. but we aren't billionaires. We are a normal family who live a comfortable but far from luxury lifestyle. We're both torn how to vote, as it would usually be labour.

I don’t believe that makes him anti Semitic.

What is he then? Extremely unlucky? Whoops I just keep doing things that make me look antisemitic and it’s just totally coincidental that my party is so antisemitic it reached the threshold for investigation by the EHRC?

HermioneWeasley · 15/11/2019 18:58

It’s not the higher taxes, it’s whether they represent value for me as the taxpayer. I don’t trust JC to spend my money wisely or efficiently.

I abhor the anti Semitism he has let flourish in his party

I think his policy of self ID is the biggest threat to women and girls for decades.

His policy of nationalisation is bonkers

CendrillonSings · 15/11/2019 18:58

Jeremy Corbyn: The Unluckiest Anti-Racist in the World.

That’s one hell of a campaign slogan he’s got there!

gamerwidow · 15/11/2019 19:05

Paying more tax doesn't bother me. Corbyn, the way antisemitism has been dealt with and their Brexit policy puts me off of voting for Labour though.

If I was in a Tory/Labour marginal I'd vote Labour to keep the Tories out. I'm not though so I'll be voting Lib Dem.

SiriusBlackAndHisHippogriff · 15/11/2019 19:22

Yes hence my question. I don’t believe that makes him anti Semitic. Anti - Zionist most certainly

Really? Supporting a mural showing a racist stereotype is not anti semitic, just anti zionist?

DuchessMustard · 15/11/2019 20:05

@JoanieCash @Awaywiththepiskies @Cookerybookaddict @MarieG10 thank you all so much, very sincerely, for your solidarity. It reassures me that not everyone is blind to racism, willing to overlook it, or happily embracing it. Very grateful for all of you & your posts here.

DH earns a bit above that, I earn a fair bit below working for the NHS. We both believe that we should have higher taxes but properly funded health and public services because we're not on our own but part of a society.

PleaseNoFortnite · 15/11/2019 20:35

I do think that JC is mildly anti-semitic, but may just have to grit my teeth and vote for him because the Tories are much worse and I want public services and a decent standard of living for everyone back. For context I'm Jewish.

TorchesTorches · 15/11/2019 20:38

I earn more than that and i will be voting Labour. I believe that paying more tax is necessary to get better infrastructure and also schools and hospitals. The less the gap between rich and poor, the better a society functions.

HairyToity · 15/11/2019 20:39

I don't like Corbyn, but I don't like Boris either. I've decided to vote Labour this time. Just a gut feeling that Corbyn is more likely than Boris to give us a second referendum. Quite simplistic of me I know. Our joint earnings are 80k.

GinUnicorn · 15/11/2019 20:42

Yes I would. I could afford to pay a bit more tax in order to prevent those on the breadline going without hearing. That’s a just society and I am a higher earner.

georgialondon · 15/11/2019 20:46

Yes I still would if only JC wasn't leader.

As it is, I've had to swap to Lib Dem as has my partner.

Chewbecca · 15/11/2019 20:56

I earn over £80k and want to pay more tax and have better public services.

I’ll be voting Lib Dem though.

YouJustDoYou · 15/11/2019 21:29

^^Ditto.

Danglingmod · 15/11/2019 21:48

Did you even see that mural, Iggly? It is categorically anti-semitic, not anti-Israel or anti-Zionist. It was pure racism.

Of course JC is anti-semitic. He just doesn't realise he is.

This is more important than Brexit. I stand with the others on this thread and want all the Jewish posters and lurkers to know they're supported.

Lalalalalalalalaland · 15/11/2019 21:50

I will read all the manifestos and decide which one supports myself and the people i care about most (i am a low earner due to having a disabled DC)

Unless you are unlucky enough to have to try for yourself noone seems to see or care about the lack of support or services for the most vulnerable people in our society. Our special school had to stop accepting nursery children due to lack of funding, no funding for desperately needed respite, lucky to see a paed once a year, 1 year wait for inital autism assessment, 1 year wait for tribunal after DLA denied... it goes on and on.

So selfishly i will vote for whoever will improve the lives of our family and families like ours. Despite the fact that i do not believe in any of the party leaders, i despise Boris and corbyn equally and everything they believe in.

Iggly · 15/11/2019 21:51

The Tories are also anti-Semitic and Boris Johnson is all known racist 🤷🏻‍♀️

One does not excuse the other - but why does JC get more vitriol in the press when he’s not the actual prime minister?

ivykaty44 · 15/11/2019 22:00

Because the owners of the press are billionaires

Babymamaroon · 15/11/2019 22:02

If any government brought in a higher tax at £80k it will only serve to discourage progression and ambition.

What many people forget is that £80k plus salaries often involve 60-70 hour weeks at great personal and family cost.

There would come a point whereby many people would think the trade off to their work/life balance was just not worth it.

That's how it would impact my thinking.

ivykaty44 · 15/11/2019 22:11

So for £4 odd a week in tax you’d not progress your career?

If this is the case what happens in countries where there is much higher tax? Do these countries stagnate and have people not progressing?

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 15/11/2019 22:12

I would vote Labour if I earned 800k , because the Tories are the vilest arseholes imaginable. Corbyn is, without doubt, an utter pillock, and his espousal of terrorism grates on my service background. So what? He would run the country for the many, not the few. He would deal with the press and media, those poisonous vermin. As for denying the Skripal attack, Cameron and May have been brushing Russian murders under the carpet for years.

ForalltheSaints · 15/11/2019 22:16

No I would not. My reasons are nothing to do with money, but the lack of action on Labour members who made anti-semitic comments.

Cam77 · 15/11/2019 22:16

Earn comfortable six figures and voting Labour. The Conservatives make me sick to be honest. I wouldn’t vote for them for a million quid.
