Are there any singers/actors/tv presenters whose continued success you find utterly baffling?

I’m just watching TOTP from 1988 and Kim Wilde’s on.

I’m sure she’s a lovely woman, but fuck me, the lass couldn’t sing. Or dance. Or mime.
And yet, she’s still doing the rounds, all these decades later.

See also Bananarama. Who goes to see these acts?

I’m not sure if it’s me that’s missing something, so which acts leave you confused at their success?

Totally agree @Pinkarsedfly re Greg Davies and Ross Noble. Also John Bishop. Ugh! None of them just naturally funny and all peddling the same thing (I'm an ex teacher with lots of drunk stories; me, I'm so surreal (no you're not); I'm a scouser who used to be poor but now I'm really rich and famous. Puke.

I never have a bloody clue what Ariana is singing. It all kind of blends into a weird warbly burble.

She’s hitting the notes, but in Martian.

@NameChange84 I agree about Jessie J. She has a phenomenal voice. I think it’s just that she only released a few crap songs and people don’t realise.

Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom must have gone to the same "slight frown for every emotion" acting school. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe were both terrible over-actors in the HP films but I imagine they were chosen for looks as young children. Rupert Grint is brilliant, by contrast.

I dislike anyone who is obviously stage school and not a natural performer who puts you at ease. Karen Gillan was like this in Dr Who I thought. Very awkward.

Amanda Holden, Louis Walsh, all the talent show judges who have little perceptible talent of their own and just make scripted comments do my head in.

Most boy and girl groups are shockingly bad when you hear them as individuals. From the spice girls to 1d and girls aloud, it just shows how much of their success is down to good production and marketing.

I like to think I'm pretty good at detecting people who've got jobs through looks rather than ability. Shocking how much this still seems to happen. As does mis-casting people because they are a "name" - Anne Hathaway doing comedy, anyone?!! Hmm

@RitaMills I totally agree with you.

There is something about him that creeps me out and I have to leave the room or switch channels if I see him on tv.

AnyMinuteNow · 08/11/2019 23:29

Crystal1975 · 08/11/2019 23:36

Honestly sooooo many!
Agrees with all on this thread but these are my main ones

Lorraine Kelly - urghhhhhh
Amanda Holden - vom
Davina McCall - just shut up!!!!!!!!
David Walliams - yak
Daniella Westbrook - hideous
Danny dyer - just do not get it?

Interesting that Lorraine and Amanda are always on tv but no one actually likes them ?!

Nottoomuchgarlic · 08/11/2019 23:38

James Cordon. Face like the pie I saw in Waitrose last night with a yellow sticker on it: all obviously dropped and squashed and folding in on itself. No, wait - a Cabbage Patch doll. That’s it. Utterly vacuous - when he tries to take himself seriously it’s unbearable.

Ross Noble - I just sit there thinking “but who’s buying the tickets? Who’s watching whatever he’s in?” He’s awful I’m embarrassed for him. Surely he must know his days are numbered? Save everything you earn now, Noble.

Nottoomuchgarlic · 08/11/2019 23:38

Stephen Fry. Wipe your chin you lascivious old fraud.

peonypower · 08/11/2019 23:39

Jess Glynne.
Honking voice.

ethelredonagoodday · 08/11/2019 23:39

Tess Daly and Amanda Holden.

willstarttomorrow · 08/11/2019 23:39

Yes to most of these. I have always got the rage re: Kylie, that nasal voice and totally bland personality and only a couple of good songs. Also Holly Willoughby and Philips Schofield have got very lucky. Cheryl whoever is just talentless and unlikeable yet takes herself so seriously.

Going against the grain here, Tess is bland but so are loads of (male) presenters. The reason she is respected as a presenter is that she is a total professional and manages to make presenting a live show look totally seamless. So whilst we all think 'airhead' the opposite is true. Links are always on time and she keeps the show going. Those who work with her love and respect her.

NameChange84 · 08/11/2019 23:40

Oh gosh yes. I absolutely cannot stand Stephen Fry. I would fall out with him in two seconds flat in real life.

bloodynamechange · 08/11/2019 23:41

Amanda Holden
Cheryl Cole
The Kardashians

SwedishEdith · 08/11/2019 23:42

Alan Davies
Ant n Dec
Amanda Holden

AgeLikeWine · 08/11/2019 23:47

Victoria Beckham. it’s baffling how she has maintained such a level of fame for so long on the basis of no discernible talent of any description whatsoever. Except, perhaps, a talent for not eating.

Steve Wright. He is absolutely awful, and he has been repetitively awful for decades. How on earth is he still employed on the nation’s biggest radio station while the excellent Simon Mayo was forced out?

JoyceJeffries · 08/11/2019 23:51

Jeremy vine. Have to turn radio/tv off as soon as he’s on.
