The one song you love by a band you generally dislike

As the title suggests! Are there any bands that you really can't stand most of the time, but they have just one song that you inexplicably love?

Most of mine involve dull, landfill indie bands:

Somewhere Only We Know by Keane
El Salvador by Athlete
Golden Touch by Razorlight
Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chilli Peppers

I was going to add something by U2 but then realised that I like at least five of their songs, so evidently I don't hate them as much as I thought I did Grin

One hit wonders don't count, btw!

Enjoy the silence by Dépêche Mode. Wonderful song, awful band.
Never Ever by All Saints. Girl bands are not my thing at all, but that is a great song.
Biology by Girls Aloud. Ditto
Back for Good by Take That. Ditto, but boy bands.

MrsWillGardner · 10/11/2019 13:23

Ariana Grande - No Tears Left to Cry.

RusholmeRuffian · 10/11/2019 17:02

End of the Century by Blur.

toomuchtooold · 11/11/2019 09:27

I've just been to listen to all of these other Coldplay songs and you're all wrong

In defence of my choice of Viva la Vida: I only actually like the Pet Shop Boys' live Glastonbury cover of it. I was all like "wow that is such a great PSB song, which album is that off again aargh god oh no that's a Coldplay song"

Goodnightjude1 · 11/11/2019 09:40

Woman by Mumford and sons. Haven’t heard anything else by them that I like....

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 11/11/2019 09:51

Celine Dion - It's All Coming Back to Me. She's such an awful, overblown singer, but on this awful overblown song the circle is squared and it's just brilliant. Great fun for singing along too.

Not sure if Mark Morrison counts as a one hit wonder, but Return of the Mack is ace.

Also Paolo Nutini Iron Sky, and Will Young - Leave Right Now

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 11/11/2019 09:55

I am speechless at this thread.. honestly speechless

IdaBlankenship · 11/11/2019 10:12

@TheTurnOfTheScrew 'Leave Right Now' is such a great song, it makes me feel all sad & wistful (not that I'd ever admit that in real life)

I agree with Coldplay 'Clocks' and I'd like to throw Jamelia 'Superstar' in to the mix.

I have a secret playlist on my phone of things that would make serious music people wince Grin

ElizabethMainwaring · 11/11/2019 10:18

Philadelphia Freedom by Elton John. He's mentioned quite a bit here I see.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 11/11/2019 10:24

Coolcool care to elaborate...? Are you a die-hard Coldplay fan?

George Michael Faith
All Saints Never Ever

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 11/11/2019 10:41

One Day Like This - their only good song. They're a really mediocre band except this song.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 11/11/2019 11:50

@EoinMcLovesCakeJumper No, but The Beatles.. Oasis.. Radiohead.. Blur.. Muse.. Keane.. Queen.. are pretty much all of my favourite bands!

RHCP as a dull indie landfill band is particularly savage OP!

Not sure what my contribution would be though.

notacooldad · 11/11/2019 12:14

I am not a Cliff Richard fan at all but I do like 'Carrie' such a sad song with a good melody.
Other ones would be:
Telegraph Road by Dire Straits
Blue Jeans by Lana Del Ray
Let me entertain you by Robbie Williams

user1473069303 · 11/11/2019 13:01

Mama by Genesis
It is just stunning

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 11/11/2019 14:09

@CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt ah, I see. I did say "mostly" landfill indie bands, and I don't consider RHCP to come under that category, but I just really hate them. I love Radiohead, Blur and Muse too, btw, but that's the nature of this kind of thread - you're going to get people who trash your favourite bands... I think it's quite refreshing for people to be able to admit that a good song is a good song even if it's by someone you don't normally like, so you could take that as encouragement, I suppose?

Happy Christmas War is Over, nothing else by Lennon or the Beatles for that matter.

notacooldad · 11/11/2019 14:23

I was never a fan of Kool and the Gang, they are not my bag at all but I really like Misled.

Dramaofallama · 11/11/2019 14:29

Wonder wall by Oasis.

NationMcKinley
I have to agree with mick hunknall giving irrational rage! I can tolerate his songs, even like a few of them but I can't watch him or any of his music videos.

nevergotthehangofthursdays · 11/11/2019 14:56

There were a couple when the excerpt of the song used in the advert sounded amazing but the whole song was a total dirge.

I give you the original John Lewis ad song - Always a woman. Begins brilliantly but the bit they didn't put in the ad just sort of pisses about and goes nowhere.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/11/2019 15:28

Singer rather than band, but 'Rock DJ' by Robbie Williams....I've absolutely no interest in any other Robbie Williams output.

I was going to say the same, but about Old Before I Die. It might have been partly because I have fond memories of the time when it came out, but it's such a catchy tune.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/11/2019 15:30

Do not ever play the lady in bastarding red anywhere near me under any circumstance. God awful song.

What, even though it was about his recently-unmurdered wife? Grin

I know what you mean about CdB, but I do love Borderline (not the same song as the Madonna one!)

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 11/11/2019 15:39

I'm surprised nobody has said More Than Words by Extreme. It was completely unlike the rest of their output and I knew a lot of people who loved that song, went out and bought the album, and then found that they hated everything other song on it. And because it was usually a cassette, it was much harder to just skip to the bit you liked!

notacooldad · 11/11/2019 15:46

OP, I like Exteme BUT not that song! I really hate it.
Same with Disturbed's version of Sound of Silence.
I have liked Disturbed for a long time so it was a shock when I first heard it. I saw them last year and they had quite clearly loads of new ' fans' who hadnt listened to anything else by them!
That was rather amusing!🤣🤣

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 11/11/2019 16:32

notacooldad there are quite a few bands of that ilk who had one big radio-friendly hit that didn't sound anything like their usual oeuvre. I feel that way about Love Will Tear Us Apart - awful, unimaginative song that gives everyone the wrong idea about Joy Division.
