The one song you love by a band you generally dislike

As the title suggests! Are there any bands that you really can't stand most of the time, but they have just one song that you inexplicably love?

Most of mine involve dull, landfill indie bands:

Somewhere Only We Know by Keane
El Salvador by Athlete
Golden Touch by Razorlight
Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chilli Peppers

I was going to add something by U2 but then realised that I like at least five of their songs, so evidently I don't hate them as much as I thought I did Grin

One hit wonders don't count, btw!

Coldplay - The Scientist
Aerosmith - Livin' On The Edge

BearSoFair · 07/11/2019 20:29

Oh one more, Kasabian - Empire

Zaphodsotherhead · 07/11/2019 20:32

Marilyn Manson's cover of 'Own Personal Jesus'. I know it's a cover but I think it's better than the original, and it's the only thing of his that I really like.

DareDevil223 · 07/11/2019 20:34

Yes to Crazy Horses by The Osmonds. I don't much like Kings of Leon but I love Molly's Chamber by them.

OhHeyItsMe · 07/11/2019 20:44

The Beatles - Come Together

Clocks by Coldplay

Everything else is just blurgh

bakedtattie23 · 07/11/2019 21:24

Don't Panic by Coldplay

Hobbes8 · 07/11/2019 21:31

Hurt by Johnny Cash.

It’s a bit off topic, but remember in the 90s when the songs from adverts - especially Levi’s adverts - would often get to no 1? There were a couple when the excerpt of the song used in the advert sounded amazing but the whole song was a total dirge. Spaceman by Babylon Zoo was one. Stiltskin was another.

tisonlymeagain · 07/11/2019 21:34

The Scientist - Coldplay

(Seems a lot of us hate Coldplay!)

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 07/11/2019 22:08

Hobbes8 in a way, that's the microcosm version of this thread! I bought both of those singles on the strength of the adverts and was duly disappointed, although I'm quite fond of Spaceman now because the wanky pretentious lyrics are always good for a giggle.

Fleetwood Mac were mentioned a while back. I can't bear the soft rock cocaine enthusiasts (copyright Alan Partridge) but Tusk is a proper banger.

I like most Coldplay singles, sorry!

Billie Jean was the only MJ song I liked but find it difficult to listen to now

elaine26 · 07/11/2019 22:19

Handbags and gladrags - stereophonics

Hobbes8 · 07/11/2019 22:21

I have a love of Christmas songs and have a super cheesy Christmas playlist on Spotify. Sometimes when your playlist comes to an end Spotify takes it on itself to play other songs it things you might like based on what’s on your playlist. And sometimes when this happens you’re driving on the motorway and can’t pick up your phone and change them. And that’s how you discover that you don’t really want to listen to anything else by Slade or Wizard.

Mousetrap3 · 07/11/2019 22:30

Wild horses by Susan Boyle Blush

MsRinky · 07/11/2019 22:40

God, I love Slade. I can't help it, I was a kid in the 70s and my Mum was from Wolverhampton. Cum On Feel the Noize!

Whathewhatnow · 07/11/2019 22:42

I love Hurt. Although I don't generally like Johnny Cash or Nine Inch Nails who originally wrote it.
I have a catalogue of these one-off wonders....

I love a song called Writhe by Kyuss and I really, really do not appreciate any kind of stoner rock usually.

Some Dire Straits.
The occasional U2 song.
Also some coldplay... so many of us here! They are popular for a reason.
And I am very embarrassed to say...the ods guns n Roses song -omfg I cannot believe I admitted that--

TheWashingFairyatemyhamster · 07/11/2019 22:49

The Lightning Strike - Snow Patrol who I find unlistenable otherwise.

Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits. Don’t like a bar of any other tune.

MoonriseKingdom · 07/11/2019 23:38

Half The World Away by Oasis
Otherwise can’t stand them

Goodnightseamer · 08/11/2019 00:15

Nowt wrong with Slade. Musically speaking what they do is very clever.

You know that slightly wistful feeling that you get when you hear those anthemic choruses? Even when they're being all triumphant and shouty? (Come on, we all get that feeling, don't lie.)

Well that's because they mix major chords (happy sounds) with minor chords (sad sounds). But they do it in a way that isn't direct. Loads of people mix major and minor chords, but they'll generally follow a certain happy sounding chord with a set sad sounding chord, that is, one that has the same key structure (known as the relative minor, fact fans).

BUT what Slade do - and they do it consistently - is take a major (happy) chord walk it down a few notes in the bassline so it sounds like you're moving step by step, this makes sense to our ears, all is well, but then at that point they swap to the related minor from that note, so there's this unexpected leap, but because you've got there by steps it's not jarring, just noticeable. And so you notice it, and because they're making you notice a sad chord it makes you wistful. Plus all the sad chords they put in fit harmonically with the original starting point so again it's not too jarring.

And that is why they made shit loads of money.

shinynewapple · 08/11/2019 00:53

Ha ha I like all these Cold Play songs!

Goodnightseamer · 08/11/2019 01:00

Me too! Actually I can't think of a band that fits the thread header description. Generally if I hate a band I hate all their stuff. There are loads of bands I feel ambivalent about but only like one or two songs, but any I hate I really hate.

Namaste6 · 08/11/2019 03:45

Love Cats by The Cure. The rest of their stuff was drivel.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 08/11/2019 07:00

That's funny, I like The Cure but I'm not especially keen on Lovecats. I'm finding this thread very interesting!

Leo Sayer, I feel Thunder in my Heart. The later funked up version was even better!
