The one song you love by a band you generally dislike

As the title suggests! Are there any bands that you really can't stand most of the time, but they have just one song that you inexplicably love?

Most of mine involve dull, landfill indie bands:

Somewhere Only We Know by Keane
El Salvador by Athlete
Golden Touch by Razorlight
Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chilli Peppers

I was going to add something by U2 but then realised that I like at least five of their songs, so evidently I don't hate them as much as I thought I did Grin

One hit wonders don't count, btw!

This one

RuffleCrow · 08/11/2019 13:09

My Phil Collins guity pleasure will always be In the Air Tonight. Although the story behind the song is pretty disturbing.

The one Simply Red song I allow myself is Stars.

The only Coldplay song i like 100% is Don't Panic.

Back in the day I hated Boyzone but quite liked Picture of You Blush when it came out.

Also East 17 - have a soft spot for Deep and Stay Another Day.

Not a Madonna fan but have always loved La Isla Bonita and Ray of Light.

Hate Michael Jackson for obvious reasons but Billie Jean is a tune.

Find Beyonce a bit meh but Crazy in Love is awesome.

Running Out - Scissor Sisters
Rule the World - Take That
Drops of Jupiter - Train

aaaannd...

Clocks - Coldplay! Grin

Rule the World - Take That

Dumptyhumpty101 · 08/11/2019 13:22

@Hobbes8 that reminds me, I loved the song in the Nike advert from years ago. Elvis Presley v JXL a little less conversation.

It’s probably controversial but I’m not an Elvis fan otherwise

soupforbrains · 08/11/2019 13:28

I really like Medicine by Bring Me The Horizon.

At the time I heard it on the radio I kept getting it stuck in my head and loved it. I didn't know any of their other music so headed off to Spotify and listedn through their back catalogue. Genuinely despised every single thing they have made. Couldn't quite understand how that one song was so different from the rest of their stuff...

MadeinBelfast · 08/11/2019 13:38

I completely agree with your song choices OP. I do like Coldplay though Blush
I also like the song Runaway Baby but hate everything else by Bruno Mars.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/11/2019 13:39

The only Coldplay song that I like is the one with Beyonce, Hymn for the Weekend. Everything else is really bland and it all sounds the same.
Creep is the only Radiohead song that I like, and even then I prefer some of the covers. Chrissie Hynde and Macy Grey both do excellent covers of it.
The only Ed Sheeran song that I like is Shape of You (I'm not proud of liking it but I can't help myself).
A bit niche, but I like White Winter Hymnal both the original by Fleet Foxes and the Pentatonix cover and am fairly meh about everything else by both of them.

ThereIsIron · 08/11/2019 13:43

This Charming Man - The Smiths

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 08/11/2019 13:57

I love earlier (pre X&Y) Coldplay

Mine are:
Love Ain't Gonna Wait For You - S Club 7, I can even forgive the appalling grammar because it's so darn catchy

I Wanna Be The Only One - Eternal, see above

One Night In Heaven - M People, I hate myself for liking this but ever since it featured heavily in a dream I had I just love it.

All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey. Normally I find her too screechy but I do love this. (Although I wish it wasn't on that Walkers advert)

MsRinky · 08/11/2019 14:01

@Goodnightseamer Thank you for that! I am very happy to learn that my love for Slade is actually evidence of my excellent taste in music rather than a dodgy lapse of judgement.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 08/11/2019 14:06

MyGhastIsFlabbered haha, I once had a really "vivid" dream that featured I Miss You by Haddaway, and now that triggers certain feelings in me too. I have chalked that one up to "just one of those things".

Love yourself - bieber

MissDew · 08/11/2019 14:15

Don't pay the ferryman by Chris de Burgh.

Anything else of his can get in the sea. Do not ever play the lady in bastarding red anywhere near me under any circumstance. God awful song.

Justme10 · 08/11/2019 14:17

I have found my people! Yellow is also mine.

'How can you not like Coldplay?' Is a question my dad often asks me Grin

willowstar · 08/11/2019 14:57

Another one here who really doesn't like Coldplay except...

When I ruled the world.

SerendipityJane · 08/11/2019 15:10

Slightly related to this idea, might be "Bands who never lived up to their first single" (if that's the only one you lie ...) ?

West End Girls - only good thing PSB ever did
Heart and Soul - ditto T'Pau (I can't put into words how much I hate "China in your hand")
Terence Trent D'Arby - If You Let Me Stay

MepsiPax · 08/11/2019 15:21

I really don't like U2 but I love the song 'Mysterious Ways'. I think everything else they've done all sounds the same. Also,I'm surprised at how many posters on here have said something by Coldplay!

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 08/11/2019 15:48

MepsiPax I really thought that I only liked The Sweetest Thing by U2, but when I gave it more thought, I remembered a bunch of others - Where the Streets Have No Name, Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Hold Me Thrill Me etc, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own. I didn't mind Vertigo either.

U2 pride. Can't stand them but that's a stomper.

Elton John, I guess that's why they call it the blues. Horrible man but some great tunes.

Goodnightseamer · 08/11/2019 17:21

@MsRinky you're welcome!

@RuffleCrow agree about Crazy In Love but actually I think what makes it great is the brass sample. So that's not Beyonce anyway - it's The Chi-Lites. Who tbf are awesome.

FrenchFancie · 08/11/2019 17:21

Disturbed did a really really good cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s’ sound of silence’. I’m not a disturbed fan at all (not s&g either) but this version just gives me chills it’s so good

Goodnightseamer · 08/11/2019 17:22

I mean, the bit that goes DURRRR dur-dur dur dur-dur DURRRR all the way through. It's a sample.

Goodnightseamer · 08/11/2019 17:25

Oh and also @RuffleCrow you've reminded me that I like Stay Another Day but not any other East 17 songs so thank you! I've answered the question.

Although it does always make me think of that guy running himself over with a kebab or whatever it was he did, now.
