A blast from MN past....anyone up for a healthy boot camp?

MissFitton · 27/10/2019 22:14

Ok, was musing earlier on a) how long I've been posting on here and b) my middle aged spread Hmmand I remembered contributing to the boot camp threads of ahem twelve or so years ago.

Thought it was time to dust them off....

The rules:

This is about feeling better about yourself...not necessarily a diet per se etc etc

  • Sunscreen at all times
  • No or little booze. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

So. I found it beneficial in my thirties, will see if the rules hold up in my forties. Anyone else in?

I need to do most of those things apart from walking as I walk a lot due to not driving. I also need to quit smoking. I'm 40 in a couple of years and in the past 2 I've been ill more then what I ever did when I was younger.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/10/2019 22:32

I'm up for this! I run a lot but my diet has gone to shit and I currently feel really unhealthy. I need to sleep more, eat less (no) sugar, stop drinking for a few weekends. I am not very kind to myself these days .

I got into a good habit of body brushing in the summer, I will try to get back to that again.

Also flossing my teeth- I need to do it better and more regularly than I do it my dentist is going to tell me off!

beethebee · 27/10/2019 22:37

Me, me!

I feel like I've filled every cell in my body with lard at the moment, and as a result am feeling unhealthy and grumpy.

I'm going to try to add in a 7 minute workout to mornings as well, I think.

MissFitton · 27/10/2019 22:40

Excellent!
Well, time for bed Grin will report back tomorrow.

I'm in. I'm an apple shape and the peri-menopause is making the slightest thing turn to stomach fat.

AgnesNaismith · 28/10/2019 06:13

I very much need to join this thread! I’ve just finished a course of strong antibiotics and had a week feeling like a zombie and eating carbs to stop the nausea. Over the last —three years—year my exercise has dwindled and I have back and hip fat.

To add to your list I need to use my retinol nightly and wear my braces Blush.

Afraid I’m going to have to drink some wine tonight as it’s half term and I’m away for the night with dh - won’t be for the rest of the week though.

LionsHeart · 28/10/2019 06:29

I've woken up with a headache, dehydrated, vastly obese, with aching joints. And it's only Monday.

One glass of water, one cup of strong tea and I'm starting to feel human again.

Starting again today, my plan is to start in a very small way.
More water, small daily walk, stretching, moisturiser, less junk food and lots of sleep.

I needed to see this post. Its all the little things I've been trying to do for weeks and failing, thank you for posting it.

Humphriescushion · 28/10/2019 06:37

Good thread! I always forget sunscreen and water and body cream.

I need to add to mine cod liver oil. - bottle next to kettle and never take them.
One green tea each day
More fruit.

Sunshinelollipops1 · 28/10/2019 06:41

Can I join? I was looking at some photos from 4 years ago - just before I had meningitis. I have aged so dramatically since. Put on so much weight, my skin looks grey and wrinkled (also have acne).

My problem is I have a busy high pressurised full time (think regularly work all weekend) job and young children. Self-care literally comes bottom of the list.

Just coming off holiday and had chance to relax (also not had a headache which I suffer from constantly in Uk) and was thinking I really need to change things when I get back.

ProperVexed · 28/10/2019 06:42

I'm in as it's just what I need. I've given up wine for October and lost 5 pounds but I can't give up forever! Just drinking a little at weekends will be good. And a simple reminder about body lotion and hand cream would be great

SeaSidePebbles · 28/10/2019 06:42

I’m in!
I’m going into hibernation, I’ve decided. I’ll spend the dark hours sleeping. Went to bed at 8 pm last night, light off at 9.20 😂.

Yy to water. I can really feel it if I haven’t drunk properly, because I run 5km 3 times a week and my joints are killing me if my cartilages are dry.
I’m also getting really stiff. Haven’t done any Pilates for ages, although I do stretch.
I’m doing a sugar free November, well most of it, apart from the long weekend we’re away.
And using nano lash.

But most of all I need to bust the stress, because that’s what makes me eat crap.

Charles11 · 28/10/2019 06:43

This sounds like a good idea.
I’m going to try daily fasting this week with 2 healthy low carb meals a day.
As well as that list, I’m adding
10 minute morning yoga (which I’ve been doing every day for the past week.)
Moisturise daily
Read daily

MinnieMountain · 28/10/2019 06:44

Do PP mind saying how old they are? I'm curious as to how successful this bootcamp is at different ages.

I'm 41 next month.

Diy2019 · 28/10/2019 06:45

Yes, I'd love to join Grin

Need to start looking after myself, my baby is 4 months old now and sleeping through the night so I can't use him as an excuse for my laziness any more!

MissFitton · 28/10/2019 07:03

Brilliant! Loads of boot campers. Smile

I forgot to put in the op (there had been wine) that you do this for three weeks and then see how you're getting on. It's not too big a commitment to make it unmanageable but just long enough to get into the swing of things and, hopefully, see some results.

Add as little or as much as you want to the list - I'm liking the retinol and I'll throw in pelvic floor exercises (the Squeezy app is good for this from the NHS). I also use flexitol foot cream which I picked up from the original threads and is brilliant stuff.

I'm 48 and very much peri-menopausal. Lone parent to two dcs and could do with a health boost before the nights really come in and I start to live only on carbs.
Im aiming to shift a few pounds, not look so haggard and feel less sluggish.

Have a good first day boot campers and here's to the next few weeks!

Magneticred · 28/10/2019 07:13

Ok this morning I have managed to put sunscreen and moisturiser on had a glass of water but still needed coffee it's 0° here. Also managed to do my physio exercises before the DC woke up. I have split stomach muscles and a tilted pelvis and I'm going to look I to yoga and Pilates this week as I read that might help.
@charles11 can I ask about the fasting days I have about a stone to lose and I'm rubbish at diets.
@MinnieMountain I'm 37 nearly 38 and never really been into exercise and I'm rubbish at diets not really needed them until this year.

ExpletiveDEVILighted · 28/10/2019 07:27

I'd like to join. I started slow jogging in the mornings about a month ago (having tried it last summer but lapsed when winter came along). I'd really like to stick with it this year but the cold/wet/dark mornings are upon us and its tempting to stay in bed. I put my running clothes out by my bed so I can get straight into them, no excuses. Trainers and high vis by the front door. No tracking, no timing, no phone, just me, I feel great once I'm out there. I also started 10 mins of yoga/stretching before bed and go to a yoga class once a week.

Yes to water (I drink gallons of tea but not much water). I'm hopeless at body lotion and intermittent with handcream. I'm early 50s and overweight.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/10/2019 07:33

Morning everyone. I feel quite optimistic now after re-Reading this thread.
One of the things on my list this week is to go through the drawers of toiletries and products and sort out one of each (a kit if you like) and either bin the rest or give them to dd to chose from. And then I might actually use them! I'm sure there is a footner somewhere so this afternoon I am going to sit down for a whole hour (luxury) and read my book and use my footner (if I find it!)

I will run later, probably 6/7km, and I have written a meal plan for the week so will go shopping too.

Have a good week everyone!

Charles11 · 28/10/2019 07:53

@Magneticred there’s lots about fasting on YouTube and internet. Michael Mosley talks about the benefits of fasting and has a 2 month 800 cal low carb plan that is meant to reverse diabetes and help deal with obesity.
It’s called the blood sugar diet and this is the one I want to try.
There’s also 16:8 where you fast for 16 hrs through the night and day and only eat in an 8 hr window. So eg breakfast at 11am and nothing til the next morning after 7pm.
I’m rubbish at diets too so it’s easier for me to take food out of the equation altogether and just fast for most of the day.

Magneticred · 28/10/2019 08:00

Thank you will have a look into those when DC are at school. Grin

Clutterfreeintraining · 28/10/2019 08:17

Ooh, can I join you please?
I look and feel so haggard. I have found work really difficult and exhausting for a couple of months (well, a lot longer than that but more so since September) so am often in bed asleep by 9. My diet is appalling and whilst I'd very much like to lose weight, I'd like to concentrate more on eating healthily and not binging on junk.
I do walk a fair bit in my working day (around 8-10k steps a day) and I swim for half an hour every weekday morning.
Skin is rubbish, hands and nails are an embarrassment...I need a routine.
I have previously lost 2 1/2 stone doing the 5:2 but it's pretty much all back on 4 years later and I lack the motivation to get back into it.

PotholePalace · 28/10/2019 08:26

I'm joining, this is exactly what I need. I'm a couple of stone overweight, but it's that gradual weight gain where I kid myself I'm having a heavy week. Or my absolute maximum weight before I think 'time to cut back' keeps getting pushed upwards.

Will have to adapt some of the rules as I work evenings/nights.

CaptainCallisto · 28/10/2019 08:35

I'm in! My self-care has gone completely down the toilet in the last few years months.

I need to add in one evening a week where DH and I do something together (board game/jigsaw etc) after the kids are in bed. We've got into a pattern where I watch telly or read and he sits at the computer and don't really talk to each other. When we used to have a game night I found it really beneficial - I was always much more productive the next day!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/10/2019 08:41

@Charles11 and @Magneticred
Here is our blood sugar diet thread if you are interested

Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16 www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/3671814-blood-sugar-diet-and-fast800-thread-16

beethebee · 28/10/2019 14:49

So I started not too badly - Set my 'bedtime' thing on my phone to remind me to try to be asleep by 10.30. But last night was one of those wretched ones where I couldn't sleep, just lay awake and stared at the ceiling for hours, and the more I got wound up about not sleeping, the more I couldn't sleep!

Still, up this morning at 0630 as usual and have sunscreened and body lotioned (Weleda skin food, I love it) and drunk loads of water. It's not lunchtime here yet (I'm not in the UK, obv).

I like the 16:8 idea, I don't eat breakfast so more or less do that anyway, though.

Am definitely cutting out weekday drinking, it makes me feel awful.
