A blast from MN past....anyone up for a healthy boot camp?

MissFitton · 27/10/2019 22:14

Ok, was musing earlier on a) how long I've been posting on here and b) my middle aged spread Hmmand I remembered contributing to the boot camp threads of ahem twelve or so years ago.

Thought it was time to dust them off....

The rules:

This is about feeling better about yourself...not necessarily a diet per se etc etc

  • Sunscreen at all times
  • No or little booze. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

So. I found it beneficial in my thirties, will see if the rules hold up in my forties. Anyone else in?

I run on Sunday and again this evening, 5k. And I swam on Sunday too. I get grouchy if I haven’t run 3 times a week, with park run cancelled, I had to. So, I’ll do another run in Thursday and parkrun Saturday and that’s me done.
Got new shoes, so I’ve been paying attention to what I'm wearing. All good

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 05/11/2019 01:55

Is it insane to measure myself with a tape measure every few weeks rather than using bathroom scales. I've not used scales since I was a preteen as my sisters and I have all had/have eating disorders/issues and my mother refused to keep them in the house. I've followed her habit due to my history and OCD.

SeaSidePebbles · 05/11/2019 06:56

confused, we don’t own scales anymore, I have a teenage DD. There are scales at the gym, but DP was getting deflated: he realised his body is changing but the weight stays the same. So I’ve been measuring him every 6 weeks.
Neck, torso, waist, hip, arm and thighs.
So no, I don’t think you’re crazy to measure yourself, if you are, so are we :)

MissFitton · 05/11/2019 19:25

I agree about no scales. I have a pair of trousers which I use as a guide. They're currently at the 'just about fit but rather snug and not fit for public' stage whereas I would like them to be at the 'ooh, must get a belt' stage Grin

How was your Pilates class Magneticred?

I found it hard. It's definitely helping my stomach (I've got split muscles from a large baby), so I'm going to keep going.

I never weigh myself. My indicator is my stomach fat.

How's everyone doing with walking/ exercise? Fitting more in is proving the hardest thing. At least I cycle everywhere.

Exp1etiveDeLighted · 07/11/2019 07:19

Well, time to check back in. Since Monday:

Run every morning.
Sunscreen - factor 15 in moisturiser but indoors all day
Water - hit and miss, managed loads yesterday
Healthy eating - healthy breakfast and lunch, still getting the munchies in the evening
Stretches - most evenings
Skincare - most evenings but do always cleanse if nothing else
Body cream - only twice, keep forgetting
Alcohol - zero but I rarely drink it anyway
Early nights - fail. None before midnight.
Mood - good.

I have just increased my work hours, which is the main reason for not enough water and lack of early nights, I used to finish at 3 and get a load of jobs done but now working till 5 and finding I'm doing housework and paperwork in the evenings, plus supporting a yr 11 DC with revision for mocks and being a taxi to various sports. The work is different too (new job, same company) and I am not at a desk all day so easy to forget to drink water. Definitely need to improve on that one, I had a headache on Tues.

SeaSidePebbles · 07/11/2019 08:14

Right, so I have Pilates and circuits today. And I must fit in a couple of runs as well by the end of the week.
I’m having my pedicure done today, and my eyebrows. Yay!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/11/2019 09:49

I've had a few weird days, started my new job on Tuesday and yesterday was quite stressed about it, so my food wasn't brilliant.

Today I feel a bit better, I'm back in again tonight and am going to sit and plan some stuff. Just been for a gruelling hilly 6km run, and have chia porridge just waiting to warm up. Hopefully today will be better. I'm 2lbs down though so that's a positive!

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 07/11/2019 16:58

So far today I had planned to walk into town for a meeting with a relay worker at church but the rain has been horrific so I bused there and back. I indulged in a latte and little pork pie because that's what I had in the fridge. I'm trying to eat healthily but not waste the food I have so it'll be interesting trying to balance that out.

Currently eating chopped breaded chicken mini fillets and a rasher of smoked bacon with chopped lettuce and homemade vinegar coleslaw consisting of red cabbage, cucumber, radishes, red pepper, spring onion, celery and grated carrot. No idea if I'll eat anything later tonight, if I do it'll likely be a smoked salmon sandwich with cream cheese or smoked salmon, cream cheese and crackers.

I'm also making homemade stock with veggie peel and bones/off cuts from meat I had in the freezer to make a big pot red lentil split pea and veggie soup to keep in the freezer for when the weather is awful. I may be nice and offer it to some of my housemates as well.

MissFitton · 07/11/2019 19:13

Sounds like everyone has a lot going on! No wonder our health and happiness comedy way down our lists.

Iv got into the routine of things now. Doing 16:8 is helping. Your soup plans ConfusedAndStressed95 sounds lovely!

It doesn't help when the weather is awful I just want to sit by the fire and drink hot chocolate. Smile

Exp1etiveDeLighted · 07/11/2019 20:46

I was WFH today so I put the heating on and drank hot chocolate. I did go for a run afterwards though. Need to dig out a hat, my ears got very cold.

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 07/11/2019 20:59

@MissFitton, yup all I want to do is stay inside and game/watch tv or read with carby/cakey comfort foods and a hot chocolate and not meal planning and working out.

SeaSidePebbles · 07/11/2019 22:33

I did circuits tonight. Christ I’m wobbly and unfit!!
But most of all, I don’t have a proper tip for that!!!
Any tips?

Neome · 07/11/2019 23:22

I love this, it's not making me feel at all stressed but I am doing a bit more being nice to myself.

I'm eating better and drinking more water - lots of room for improvement in these two. Despite a fair bit of stress I feel pretty happy - thank you!

Thecrown3 · 08/11/2019 06:27

Hello everyone, reporting back!
Only got rid of my cold on Monday .
Went to gym Tuesday night, intended to go last night or tonight but dp will not be home to babysit.Still I’m playing badminton for an hour Sunday so that’s something.
I’ve managed to choose water more this week and plain coffee with a sweetener at break, I’ve lost 4lb just by dropping frothy coffees an Diet Coke.
Got my Christmas shopping midway too!
Moisturised my body and face.
As an outdoor frontline, it’s been a mix of weather this week, about to get colder into next so we ll see how /if my positive mood dips.As Christmas and elections/bad weather approach people get more grumpy!
Read through the posts hats off to the runners! But everyone sounds like their making positive steps in big and baby steps, well done everyone Smile

MissFitton · 08/11/2019 07:29

doing a bit more being nice to myself. This is exactly it! And being good to yourself is beneficial both physically and mentally.

I'm feeling much better health wise this week and it's just down to lots of little things adding up. I've got a busy weekend but will stick to the rules so as not to undo all the benefits.

Have a good day everyone!

Exp1etiveDeLighted · 08/11/2019 07:55

It does make you feel better doesn't it? I've never stuck at exercise particularly well but have got into a proper routine with the running now and feel better mentally and physically for it. Clothes out the night before, trainers and jacket in the hall, now with gloves and hat in the pocket, I just get up, get dressed, grab my key and go.

The thread helps too, its good to see other people making positive steps whether its running, more water, better skincare. I read something recently about making changes one at a time and establishing them before adding something else, I do think its good advice.

MissFitton · 11/11/2019 07:01

Right! Start of week three, anyone still with me? Grin

All becoming habit now. Have lost a little bit of weight. Just need to work on getting to bed earlier.

Have a good week all!

OP posts:
Exp1etiveDeLighted · 11/11/2019 07:02

Yes, I'm still here, about to get up and go running. I'm not managing early nights though.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/11/2019 07:17

I'm still here! Last week was pretty disastrous to be honest, I barely stuck to any healthy eating and we drank loads this weekend. I don't feel particularly great right now. I did keep up my running and went to bootcamp though.

I'm determined today, to just stick to the food plan and think a bit more healthily. I am not running today but will do Adrienne's runner's yoga, and I'm doing a fasting day to reset myself a little after a weekend of gluttony!

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 11/11/2019 13:15

I had a bad weekend, my friends boyfriend died last week so on saturday we met up and played wii sports and ordered kebabs and cakes. Not great for your health but exactly what we needed. I'm making up for it this week by ensuring that I eat a lot veg. I've found the LoseIt app far more helpful than MyFitnessPal. It feels less judgmental and it's easier to add things. I've also found it far easier to hold myself accountable this way because I'm thinking about what I'm eating and the portion sizes are easier to gauge.

Being kind to yourself is definitely a skill worth developing. I've spent the morning beating myself up about not doing any exercise yet but then I had a shower and gave myself a talking to and remembered I have the whole day to exercise so I can do what I need to now and lift later. Or if I have a bad day/two days etc I can reset any time and start again. I can balance it out.

MinnieMountain · 12/11/2019 07:15

I went to Venice and back on the sleeper train last weekend, so water and moisturising were fails. I ate too much pastry and didn't walk much on the Friday or Sunday. I must have walked 8 miles around Venice on the Saturday though.

I've not told myself off because it made me very happy.

It felt easier to get back into the swing of things yesterday. All boxes ticked. Today I'm going to try swimming between finishing work at 13:40 and picking DS up from school.

SeaSidePebbles · 12/11/2019 07:48

I went running last night, with my mad running group, I must say I hated it. My mind needed just miles after miles, but we did interval training. It’s because I missed parkrun on Saturday.
But all in all, I’m happy, I definitely upped my game a bit.

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 12/11/2019 13:48

I've just been prescribed B12 as I'm apparently deficient so fingers crossed that once I've had the supplements a few days I'll perk up a bit and things will get easier. But so far diet and taking care of myself is improving. Plus I'm happy which is a massive positive.

SeaSidePebbles · 21/11/2019 19:53

How is everyone doing?
I managed a Pilates class yesterday, I have park run Saturday and aerobics on Sunday morning. So I’m still keeping at it.
I’ve also been eating less. Mentally I’m not in a fantastic place, but I’m making myself go out.
