A blast from MN past....anyone up for a healthy boot camp?

MissFitton · 27/10/2019 22:14

Ok, was musing earlier on a) how long I've been posting on here and b) my middle aged spread Hmmand I remembered contributing to the boot camp threads of ahem twelve or so years ago.

Thought it was time to dust them off....

The rules:

This is about feeling better about yourself...not necessarily a diet per se etc etc

  • Sunscreen at all times
  • No or little booze. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

So. I found it beneficial in my thirties, will see if the rules hold up in my forties. Anyone else in?

I'm in Smile

  • I'm also waking early to use my SAD lamp & taking vitamin D supplements.
  • I've recently started yoga nidra, yoga nin, & Pilates reformer for relaxation, flexibility & strength.
  • I love my aromatherapy oil diffuser, & lovely oils.
  • I need to drink another litre of water a day.

Does anyone has any good tips or links about meal prepping?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/10/2019 17:11

I've had a really positive day today. I fasted this morning til 12, by which time I'd made a butternut and yellow pepper soup (so had 1 portion for lunch and have 2 portions in jam jars in the freezer for later). I took my vitamins, drank several refills of my bottle of water. I went shopping and bought loads of green veggies and really nutritious feel good food. I ran 5km, fast, as well.
Tonight I'm having liver and bacon, not everyone's fave, granted, but to me it's real comfort food and it is also very nutritious. I'm having it with shredded cabbage and peas.

I've made a little overnight pot for my brunch tomorrow; 15g chia seeds, 20g oats, alpro plain yogurt and a slosh of soy milk, plus 6 frozen cherries on the top which will hopefully melt and make it all juicy. Tomorrow I'll add a spoon of PB and a few nuts. It's my DD's birthday tomorrow and normally I'd use that as an excuse to just eat rubbish all day- but not this time. I'm doing a chicken at lunchtime for sandwiches/salad and have a quick gastro fish thing for dinner with veg, so even though I will be having a Slice of cake, the day will not be written off.

This thread is really helping me, thanks everyone!

Rosebud21 · 28/10/2019 17:17

@thenewaveragebear1983, I love overnight oats, your recipe has inspired me, that's tomorrow's breakfast sorted!

Potplant · 28/10/2019 17:29

I'm in! I've been having a crappy few months and feel like my life is overwhelming me at the moment.

  • Sunscreen at all times i was using Biore Watery Esssence as a serum over summer but I'm all out now and the there's a 3 week wait on amazon. Anybody have an alternative that's not too spendy
  • No or little booze. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it im on the wagon till Christmas anyway. Started on AntiDs last month so think I need to give them time to settle in
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can i need to do this. I run 3 times a week but on other days barely do 3000 steps, because in my mind I offset the inactive days with running. I'm going to make effort to walk at lunchtime On my non running days
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day fail fail fail. I used to be so diligent about this and now I exist on coffee
  • Apply body cream as often as possible i found the Boots moisturiser you can use straight out of the shower a game changer
  • Use hand cream finally one I do already
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos *im also going to add read a book before bed, not fall asleep with my iPad in my hand'
  • Eat healthily *i gave up sugar for a couple of months and it made a massive difference. Unfortunately it's crept back in and I'm piling on the weight. Need to get back to fasting as that's the only diet that shifts the weight for me'
  • Be happy Im trying
Potplant · 28/10/2019 17:31

Butter. Bold highlighting fail.

Rosebud21 · 28/10/2019 18:48

@Potplant I used Roche-Posay anthelios ultra comfort cream SPF 50+ in summer, bought when on special in Boots, & am using Aldi's Lacura rejuvenate day cream SPF 30 now. Good idea about walking at lunch time, I've started the couch to 5K, but my asthma playing up at the moment has slowed progress. I hear what you're saying about the active days & less active days. I was on a reducing dose of antidepressants but this week increased them again, as was irritable for no reason for too long. The increase is helping

Potplant · 28/10/2019 19:53

@rosebud21 thank you. Im going to Boots to stock up on vitamins this week so I'll check it out.

Just seen this - love the idea Smile

MissFitton · 28/10/2019 22:40

Sounds like some positive days have been had!

I managed all the rules I'm sitting in bed if not quite asleep and appear to have started on 16:8 which I've done before. As someone who isn't a fan of breakfast it's quite doable.

Wrt sunscreen I use Altruist from amazon as recommended somewhere on MN.

Looking forward to hearing how people are getting on.

Right, off to bed.

I am so up for this, can I join?

There has been a dearth of motivational threads, unless you are running 5km, or doing The Shred or whatever its called.

I turn 40 next year and would really like to crack this healthy thing. I gave up smoking before my 30th but this decade has involved too much stress and only sporadic exercise. So stress is a big thing. On the plus side I have made a lot of progress in evening out my yoyo weight loss/gain with a sensible approach, and am not a big drinker. Chuck a couple of diagnoses in there, its been quite a decade.

I'm on holiday so today I walked 10k+ steps around a castle. Tomorrow will be the same on a beach.

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 29/10/2019 01:39

I'm up for joining. I need to make some massive changes and I'm about to start using slimfast for the first time. I really struggled when trying to moniter and maintain my actual diet and calorie intake so I'm trying to go right back down to basics and get my weight under control and focus on fitness first and incorporating more exercise into my life before going back to solid foods.

MissFitton · 29/10/2019 13:51

All are welcome! I'll do some sort of roll call when I get to sit down for longer than five minutes. Grin

The beauty of this is it isn't too arduous, it's all about building little habits which will become second nature. We must have trained ourselves to brush our teeth at some point (without parental nagging) but you probably wouldn't consider not doing it now.
We deserve to treat ourselves well and keep ourselves healthy and happy and this goes a little way to achieving that.

Thecrown3 · 29/10/2019 14:17

I’d like to join please?!
I work outside all year but unbelievably I haven’t ever used sunscreen as my foundation has it in... this sounds dim but do you really think an extra level of it is important , especially in winter?.what would be a good one within £20-30 budget?

I’m lack lustre on body lotion and exfoliating in shower too.i moisturise my face religiously as get very dry skin ( again thanks to working outside in all weathers).
I had got into a good x 3 evenings a week gym habit now am off shift work pattern - but slipped by wayside in summer!
I had to take prescribed vit d/b/c an magnesium last year which I did feel better for, I try to take now every day but can slip.
I feel I need a little daily challenge tick list like what you started the thread list with Op so I’ll try that.
On a side note, my brother has been diagnosed with a serious illness this week.Hes my little brother by 2 years and although the outlook will eventually be ok after lots of invasive treatments it’s hit us all for six..... also making me realise that now ds ‘s are 19 and 12 - I have a bit more free time to really concentrate on me... the little things to do for myself... let alone the big things/dreams and we should help ourselves to stay well where we can both physically and mentally - you never know what is going to strike.

Magneticred · 29/10/2019 15:39

@Thecrown3 Altruist Dermatologist Sunscreen SPF 50 - high UVA protection, 100 ml (2 x 100 ml) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06X6LZWRC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_d2eUDbCQV66V4?tag=mumsnetforu03-21. I use this sunscreen under my moisturiser and I use it all year round.
Since Sunday I've manage to be in bed before 11 and take my vitamins everyday which I've always been lax about. My energy levels are bad but I've previously had a vitamin d deficiency and anemia if they don't improve over the next couple of weeks or gets worse I'm going to have to get them checked out.
I am going to start the 16:8 fast diet but need to plan out my meals carefully. I can't do a low carb diet as I struggle with fiber intake and it effects my ibs badly.

I've called the stop smoking service and someone is ringing me back to book me in and I celebrated doing this by having a friend cut my hair and dye it as I decided a fresh start needed a fresh look. Grin

beethebee · 29/10/2019 16:59

I also work outside, am not a very makeup-ish person so I use this one without anything else. I love it: www.origins.eu/be/en/product/15352/46938/skincare/moisturize/moisturizers/ginzing/spf-40-energy-boosting-tinted-moisturizer

beethebee · 29/10/2019 17:03

I also make salt scrubs to do a decent skin exfoliation in the shower once a week or so or when I get around to it .

Just coarse sea salt, coconut oil (or almond oil if coconut oil is solid at room temp in the UK) and whatever essential oils you fancy. I like a mix of geranium, eucalyptus, lavender and peppermint.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/10/2019 19:14

Beethebee you can do this with castor sugar instead of coarse salt to make a gentle lip exfoliator too, especially good this time of year if you get dry lips but you must be gentle.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/10/2019 19:35

I've had a good day today- are my overnight oats pot this morning, then had roast chicken salad for both lunch and dinner as it is my DD's birthday and they all had pizza and garlic bread for dinner so I had salad. I did have a piece of birthday cake and I might have another small slither tonight, but other than that I haven't gone mad. Previously I'd have just written the day off and eaten all the junk so I'm counting that as a small
Victory.

Tomorrow, I want to run early if possible, then my plan is to have a really good low carb day!

MissFitton · 29/10/2019 19:36

@Magneticred well done on calling the stop smoking service, that's a big thing! I'm an ex smoker so I appreciate how hard it is.

Today I've hit my step count, drunk the water, moisturised and eaten sensibly. I've also recorded my weight as it was creeping up a bit. I got out in the sunshine and had s nice dinner with the dcs tonight. Just need to get to bed on time.

OP posts:
Magneticred · 29/10/2019 19:59

@MissFitton Thank you I'm hoping that saying it on this thread makes me more accountable, I can't tell everyone in rl as they will all say I won't do it and people tend to smoke more when I'm trying to quit.

I was going to start the 16:8 tomorrow but was aiming for the 11- 7 but I have an appointment at half 10 so I won't be home in time. So I either have to tweak the time or start the day after. I dont like buying food out as I get too tempted and have DD3 with me she's 2 and I take snacks for her and in the past they have been my downfall.

HoliBobber · 29/10/2019 22:50

7500 steps today
Beetroot burgers for dinner
Took time to enjoy beach-made me happy

Tomorrow: yoga, shopping, me time

MinnieMountain · 30/10/2019 06:11

The first 2 days have gone well. I've signed up for Pilates next Monday. I walk or cycle everywhere anyway but I had an extra 15 minute walk last night and I'll start going for walks in my lunch breaks (I work PT).

The moisturising is an important self-care thing that I normally forget.

Eating wise I've really cut down on carbs. The challenge is going to be DS's birthday this weekend.

SeaSidePebbles · 30/10/2019 06:50

Ok, on Monday I went for a run after work, did the nanolash thing and drunk lots of water.
Yesterday is was rest day, but I cooked a healthy meal, I also watched what I ate, but collapsed into bed exhausted, no beauty routine, just brushed my teeth.
I’m going to look out a Pilates session on YouTube in a minute :)

ExpletiveDEVILighted · 30/10/2019 09:36

Well done everyone. I've been away for a few days, so out of routine, but clocked up 42000 steps over 3 days, no alcohol, early-ish nights but probably not enough water (lots of coffee shop stops). Got back yesterday and made a nice meat-free dinner with DS (when I felt like just grabbing toast).

Today I have been for a short run, done my morning skincare including SPF and handcream, had breakfast and gone to work. Drinking Rooibos tea instead of normal.
