A blast from MN past....anyone up for a healthy boot camp?

131 replies

MissFitton · 27/10/2019 22:14

Ok, was musing earlier on a) how long I've been posting on here and b) my middle aged spread Hmmand I remembered contributing to the boot camp threads of ahem twelve or so years ago.

Thought it was time to dust them off....

The rules:

This is about feeling better about yourself...not necessarily a diet per se etc etc

  • Sunscreen at all times
  • No or little booze. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

So. I found it beneficial in my thirties, will see if the rules hold up in my forties. Anyone else in?

Good evening all!

Finally on a laptop rather than phone so here's to a roll call....

@Magneticred
@Clutterfreeintraining
@Charles11
@thenewaveragebear1983
@ExpletiveDEVILighted
@PotholePalace
@Diy2019
@beethebee
@MinnieMountain
@AgnesNaismith
@LionsHeart
@Humphriescushion
@Sunshinelollipops1
@ProperVexed
@SeaSidePebbles
@Charles11
@CaptainCallisto
@Rosebud21
@HoliBobber
@Potplant
@Thecrown3

How is everyone getting on? How is the stop smoking plan going Magneticred?

There was talk of nice soups and overnight oats and lots of lovely things. I'm halfway through this weeks soup - cream of cauli and blue cheese (I make a pot every weekend to last me through weekday lunches).

Being accountable to a thread helps keep me on track and I feel better for it already. Just need to crack the going to bed early....

Day 3 of 21 done. Not bad!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/10/2019 22:35

I've not had a brilliant day to be honest, but my food has been ok barring a few extras. My old cat was put to sleep this morning so I have spent the day feeling miserable. I will be ok tomorrow. To be fair, I could easily have just given up for the day and eaten loads of rubbish so I'm quite pleased that I didn't. I ran 6km, but didn't really do much else!

Magneticred · 30/10/2019 22:45

Today has been up and down.
I've taken 14920 steps today and taken my vitamins. My ibs is playing up badly so I've hardly eaten today. My appointment is on the 14th Nov as earlier ones available I already had appointments on and they aren't ones I can rearrange.

But today's appointment was my dds echp and it's all been really positive. She is currently in an provision but has improved a lot since she started 3 years ago and is due to start secondary next September. We have 2 schools available to take her if she carries on with the improvement she could be going back to mainstream at some point before she would be due to start her GCSE. Feeling a bit to hyper to sleep at the min so early night has gone out of the window.

ExpletiveDEVILighted · 30/10/2019 23:24

Sorry to hear about your cat Thenew Flowers

Sounds positive about the schools Magnetic - my DS has an ehcp too, we are at the next stage, sorting 6th form, as he's in y11.

Thanks for the rollcall MissF, quite a few of us!

ValiaH · 30/10/2019 23:32

Can i join please? Mid 30s, sluggish and tired. I feel like I spend all my time making sure small people are looked after well, and keep forgetting myself- I forget that water exists and my skin is so dry at the moment as a result, I tend to drink tea, coke zero or herbal teas but always feel better if I drink even one large glass of plain water. I also need to move more- I broke my foot in the summer and it is still weak so I've been putting on weight and losing tone over the last 2 or 3 months which I would like to change.

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 31/10/2019 02:49

I need to head into town tomorrow and if its not rainining I'll be walking the 2 mile journey there and potentially back. Will remember to have my shake beforehand so I'm not hungry and take a bottle of water so I don't buy snacks.

Neome · 31/10/2019 03:40

Thank you so much for this thread. I like your list very much.

A - Sunscreen at all times
B - No or little booze. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it
C - Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
D - Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
E - Apply body cream as often as possible
F - Use hand cream
G- Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
H - Eat healthily
I - Be happy

Cake Doing already or could very easily B G I
Smile Not doing, need to get organised ( ie buy bodycream) moderately confident A D E F
🎁 A big challenge, planning and support needed to make progress C H

This is my first step, taking stock.

I intend to make those things in the top group established, conscious habits of StarStarStarStar self care.
This week I intend to address at least one thing from the other two groups. F and C look easiest/most rewarding.

I'm trying to grasp hold of the Michael Mosley stuff, very resistsnt but I know it's a good plan.

Today I'm grateful for family support with two unexpected "slings and arrows".

Morning!
I’m currently looking up spf cream- the one suggested on amazon wasn’t good reviewsHmm so I’m going to try find a clinque one or even Superdrug one! But thank you for suggestions.
I’ve been to bed early this week, clock change has thrown me but then get up at 5.30.
Been in a few layers this week outside, I feel like marshmallow man though wrapped up:-(
Have drank more water and went to gym Monday- was due to go last night but went to see brother after first treatment instead.
Catch up later all- have a good day.

MissFitton · 31/10/2019 07:02

Good morning all.

Welcome @ValiaH and sorry I missed you off the roll call @ConfusedAndStressed95 as it wouldn't let me tag you yesterday Hmm

Sorry to hear about your cat thenewaveragebear, always sad when they go, no matter how old they are.

Good news re the ehcp review magneticred, great that your dd could make the move to mainstream. Sorry to hear your ibs is playing up.

Busy day here but feeling perkier already. I suspect more water and a lack of a glass of wine with dinner is responsible.

Have a good day all. Smile

Thecrown3 · 31/10/2019 07:54

@MissFitton how big was the group on MN from years ago and was there any real success stories or amazing things happen?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/10/2019 08:26

Morning.
Feeling positive today- I've been out for my run already which is always a good start. We're going out with friends to the park today so will walk a fair bit there too. Meals are: salad and nigella's meatloaf for lunch, and dinner will be a chicken and ribs combo from the hairy bikers recipe book which I'm really looking forward to.

ValiaH · 31/10/2019 11:59

Morning! Just been looking through the list again with slightly more awake eyes.
-Sunscreen at all times - Found my spf 15 moisturiser from the summer and have used it!

  • No or little booze. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it- none in the house at the mo.
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can- none so far, does walking up and downstairs every 10 mins when a child needs something count?
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day- I am very proud of myself! I have drunk 500ml of water already, I dug out my reusable water bottle and am challenging myself to drink 4 of them, 1 down so even if I don't manage 4 that's better than the zero over the last month or so.
  • Apply body cream as often as possible - I don't think I have any body cream. Will have to get some, for now I will use my sons excema moisturiser
  • Use hand cream- ditto hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if poss - This is ont of my downfalls. Kids fall asleep around 9.30/ 10pm and so 1030 feels too early. But if I am in bed and reading that will be progress!
  • Eat healthily- Haven't eaten any chocolate yet which again is a bad habit I fell into, so feeling proud of myself here. I think we are having a chip shop or supermarket cafe lunch though as it's half term and I promised the kids we would go out somewhere to eat today.
  • Be happy- Grin

3 weeks sounds doable, much less scary and intense than permanent or open ended changes, and hopefully will build new habits!

ValiaH · 31/10/2019 12:01

@thenewaveragebear1983 sorry to hear about your cat, they become part of the family don't they. Glad you're feeling more positive today.

LionsHeart · 31/10/2019 12:31

I've been taking vitamin supplements regularly now for three weeks, and the bone deep tiredness is lifting!
Drinking water regularly at my desk & getting 30 mins of exercise in at least three times a week.
Am embracing 'Hygge' as a means of self-care - huge furry duvet cover, lots of woolly blankets around, & candlelit baths.

Food-wise - no progress there. Have bought some ready meals to have with salad or veg, but I'm still eating choc, pastries, fatty foods. Plus wine. Woe is me.

MissFitton · 31/10/2019 13:17

@Thecrown3 if I remember rightly there was a similar number. Can't remember about significant successes as such but I'm still using sun screen, walking daily and trying to get enough sleep 12 years later so once the habit is formed it can stay with you!

@ValiaH - chips for lunch can go towards being happy so just count it as that!

@LionsHeart - I'm very much up for a hygge approach. I own far too many fluffy blankets.

OP posts:
Potplant · 31/10/2019 15:49

Sunscreen - I checked and I already have the Aldi q10 moisturiser with spf so I’ve been using that. I looked at the Roche one but it’s a bit too £££ at the moment. I’ll keep a look out for when it’s on offer.

Booze - on the wagon and I never really drank during the week anyway

  • Walking - not managed this yet, but I’m off work with DCs this week so will make more effort when I’m back in work next week.
  • water - nope. Anyone got any tips on how to get to 2l? I just can’t seem to do it. I get to about 6pm and realise I’ve only had 3 glasses of water.
  • Apply body cream - ✅
  • Use hand cream ✅
  • Go to bed early - late one yesterday, but other than that yes
  • Eat healthily - I’m cutting back on the sugar and trying to stick to MFP. Ok so far
  • Be happy - work in progress!

I also went to see a sports physio yesterday. I run a lot and have constant niggles. I can’t afford every month but will definitely get another one in before Christmas.

And I’ve restocked my vitamins stash.

ProperVexed · 31/10/2019 16:54

Not a bad day. Huge achievement moment when I remembered to apply body lotion after my shower! It's raining so I didn't walk the dogs (DH did) so I'm only on 8000 steps. Might have to move around this evening rather than sitting on mn. Meanwhile Stoptober was a huge success, no alcohol and few carbs have resulted in a 5 pound weight loss. I have a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc waiting in the fridge for tomorrow!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/10/2019 19:48

I've had a reasonable day. I did 25k steps which included a good hilly 7km run. I've actually resisted a fair bit of stuff I could have had (eg at McD's with the dc , I just had a Sprite Zero and 2 nuggets) but I feel like I've eaten way too much anyway. Period arrived today and I've been doubled over with cramps which is not usual for me but is probably the result of a very unhealthy October. I'm ending the month 3.5lbs lighter than I started it but I feel absolutely wretched and very unhealthy.

So for November:

  1. get myself back off the carbs ASAP, they aren't good for me. I'm kidding myself to tell myself I'm on a low carb diet, I'm eating sugar every single day.
  2. increase my protein and fat on running days
  3. increase my running miles back to where I was before (this has been my worst month in 18 months with only 105km)- aiming for 140 this month
  4. 2/3 fasting days each week
  5. water, vitamins, generally cleaning up my diet
  6. early bed at least 2 nights a week

Sounds easy huh? It does sound like a lot BUT. I know these things feed into each other. Eg. Increasing protein will lead to fewer carbs, fasting a few days will clean up my diet etc. Healthy brings healthy. I need to stop buying things that I know I will binge on (even 'healthy' things like peanut butter and nuts, which I just eat and eat until they are gone.

I want to feel that healthy, full of life, 'on it' feeling that I had at the beginning of the year. If I could lose 2lb a week in November that would be great, but actually I'd prefer the nice clear head and feeling in control rather than this groggy, overstuffed, too much junk feeling.

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 01/11/2019 03:06

Really poor day today here. Didn't get up till after 12 because I was having panic attacks during the night while I slept. Then I ate a fairly balanced meal of pasta, prawns, peppers, garlic, mushroom, onion and celery with a little cream and chili.

I've also had a healthy chili with a side of puff pastry twirls and ricotta so not great and minimal walking. I walked maybe 15 mins and very few steps. I intend to do better tomorrow.

MissFitton · 01/11/2019 07:41

Hope you've had a better night ConfusedAndStressed95

I'm with you on the sugar thenew. Far too much here. Chocolate is too nice though. Hmmmn

Fantastic work everyone! And I’m not being patronising, even the fact we’re mindful of stuff counts enormously, being aware of our bodies and what they need is a step forward.

I did my second run of the week last night. I am definitely one of those people who need to do things as a group. Had I been on my own I would have never got out of the house in the evening to run through the woods in the dark. A bit extreme, but there you have it.
DP and I made a killer chilli last night, all healthy stuff, we had a bowl each after our run.
I’m doing parkrun tomorrow.
And I negotiated a much better deal for our gym membership, £500 for the both of us for the year. I want to take up spinning —because it toned my DP’s legs something spectacular—. So we’re doing that together now. I introduced him to swimming, he’s going to introduce me to spinning.

I think I love this time of the year :)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/11/2019 08:16

Seaside I am impressed that you ran through the woods, in the dark, on Halloween night. You're bonkers

SeaSidePebbles · 01/11/2019 08:25

bear, let me reassure you IT WAS NOT MY IDEA!!!!😂. In fact if anybody would have told me beforehand this is what we’re going to do, I would have feigned a sudden need to wash my hair or something. I walked into it like a lamb to the slaughter. I played it cool though: yeah, that’s fine! And I didn’t ask how many K would be either, because if I knew, I would have died.

MinnieMountain · 01/11/2019 10:56

I drank beer at the pub last night Blush It was a long planned trip to a particular place, it would have defeated the purpose drinking anything else. It also meant I went to bed at 11pm.

Otherwise I'm doing well. The moisturising and drinking 2l of water really helps. I've been going for short walks in my 30 minute lunch break.

Frustratingly I'm stuck at home today with an ill DS. I was going to swim whilst he was at school dammit.

Rosebud21 · 01/11/2019 11:17
