Cat ate a mouse whole, seems to be feeling rough!

DD saw our cat swallow a mouse whole this morning 🤢. He was seemingly fine all day and ate his dinner but now appears very uncomfortable - hissed at me, cries if I try to pick him up, seems to have tummy ache and is wobbly on his legs. I think it must be due to the mouse as he’s not injured. His breathing is fine. Kids worrying he won’t last the night but I think they are being dramatic. Thoughts? Apart from thoughts about him being a bad mouse-murderer which we have already had!

Try and get some sleep Tunnocks. Your cat is in safe hands. Flowers

ongranaryplease · 20/10/2019 23:19

You have done so well and you are doing so well OP. Sorry my words aren’t wiser but your strength is evident enough for me to sense it through your posts on a mobile phone screen and that says something. Have that birthday cake and try and get some sleep.

DCat was very poorly in the out of hours vets a few years ago. I kept my phone volume on loud and slept with it next to me. They rang me in the very early hours of the morning after he’d had surgery and I answered to get the news and then finally managed to drift off. Maybe try the same xx

Tunnocks, I'm so sorry your gorgeous cat is unwell. You already have so much to cope with. Hope everything seems brighter in the morning. BrewCake for now.

Cats are very good at hiding pain, please don’t feel guilty. You took him to 5e vet as soon as you noticed something was wrong.

I am crossing everything for him and you. Hope to hear good news tomorrow. 💐

queenjaneapprox · 20/10/2019 23:32

Hope your cat is ok. Sorry you've had such a horrendous time. I'm on my own too with kids and it's really hard. Cry when you need to and make sure you always have wine in.
💐

tunnocksreturns2019 · 20/10/2019 23:32

Thanks everyone Flowers

Can’t settle and still feeling shivery so I’m adding hot water to the bath I ran at 8pm and then never got in!

Our old cat got badly run over (broken leg, broken pelvis, dislocated leg) and was pinned back together. He lived another 8 happy years to the age of 17. Fingers crossed for your cat. Hope you get some sleep. I will be up all night if you need an ear or a shoulder.

ClientListQueen · 20/10/2019 23:34

Take a hot drink to the bath to help warm you up

thaegumathteth · 20/10/2019 23:34

Oh it's shit when you're already overwhelmed and then something happens and there's just nobody else there to take any of the strain. I feel for you.

I really hope your cat is ok - he's gorgeous. Can you take tomorrow off work? you need to look after yourself. You sound worn out.

AnotherEmma · 20/10/2019 23:36

What a beautiful cat!
Enjoy your bath - I vote hot drink (tea or hot chocolate) and save the wine as a PP suggested.
Are you into meditation at all, just wondering if there is something that might help you sleep or at least doze until you get the call from the vet.

PancakeAndKeith · 20/10/2019 23:44

Our cat flap comes into a lean to before coming through a wall and into the house. The lean to is like the cat’s own private room as you can’t access it from the house, only outside.
A few years ago we replaced the roof, it involved lots of painting of nasty chemicals on the wall and a roll of lead.
That evening the cat refused her food, she never refuses food. I called the insurance vet line who said that because of the chemicals we had been using that day it was best to take her to the vets.
Of course this meant trekking to the pit of hours vets 10 miles away rather than the normal one at the end of our road.
After an examination it turned out there was nothing wrong at all. She was just being a prima donna about the roof changing.

£150 lighter because she had an attack of the vapours.

Hope your baby is better soon, op.

NutButterNutter · 20/10/2019 23:48

Oh OP I hope your handsome chap is OK. I had a similar experience (and also share the same I Am Not Superhuman home life Hmm) a couple of years ago and our boy is still going strong after a few days of syringe feeding as he'd smashed a few teeth out. His eyes are a bit weird but he's still lovely and mad and manages to give the same hand chews when he's pretending to love me Smile

tunnocksreturns2019 · 20/10/2019 23:53

Thanks again everyone. You’re making me feel less alone.

No, definitely can’t take tomorrow off work - three days of work then I have all of half term off and a million things to do at work before end Wed.

Obviously half term with my kids will be super relaxing 🤣. I love them lots but I need to use all my annual leave in school holidays and it’s really hard to find any time at all for myself. Normally I don’t work on Mondays but there’s often a reason when I actually do (like tomorrow - to go towards half term off). And when I am home on Mondays I’m doing all the stuff you need to do to run a household by yourself. I very much had kids on purpose but my late DH was a very hands on dad, plus it turns out DS has some additional needs and is lovely but high maintenance 😅. I do realise I’m lucky to be able to work part time though I was just reading the thread about what a nightmare the after school hours are and was rather agreeing.

Ah, little cat. Have they x rayed you yet?

Sending good thoughts that your cat is OK Tunnocks. You’re doing such a good job for your DC. I hope you feel better after a good cry Flowers

Ah NutButter, another lovely ‘my cat got better’ story 😊

Right. In bed. Warm. Going to try to get some sleep.

DontCallMeShitley · 21/10/2019 00:21

Be kind to yourself, enjoy your bath, go to bed with a hot water bottle or electric blanket on for a while, find something to cuddle, a teddy or something soft.

I adopted a cat that had been in an accident, he had no tail. Someone had found him at the side of the road and taken him to get repaired. We never found out the whole story and he wasn't quite right around the back end sometimes but he was generally in good working order. We had him almost 11 years, assuming he was about 5 or so when we took him in he had a long life.

Your beautiful cat is in the right place, try to rest and be strong for him.

MirandaWest · 21/10/2019 00:32

Hope you’re asleep Tunnocks - I also have another cat being hit by a car and getting better story.

Suki disappeared one day about 6 weeks ago - last saw her about 10am and realised around 2pm I hadn’t seen her for a few hours. Didn’t come home that night. Next day my neighbour called to me about 10am saying she was in his garden and it didn’t look good. She pulled herself through a gap in the fence and her back legs were wrong. Took her to the vet and she had dislocated her hip and made a mess of the other ankle. She must have dragged herself back to our house and as the wound on her ankle was quite nasty and infected she may well have been in bushes for a while.

She was operated on the next day at a specialist vet and got pinned back together. She’s still got the pins in and is mostly confined to a cage but seems to be getting better. We’re off to see the vet on Wednesday and hopefully it will have mended and she can have the pins removed.

So if she’s ok after a night out in the open then I am hopeful for your cat too. Suki would say the worst thing is the cone of shame and not being able to go out

Cat ate a mouse whole, seems to be feeling rough!
frankie001 · 21/10/2019 00:48

What a beautiful cat. Sending get well wishes and cat treats through the internet x

managedmis · 21/10/2019 00:56

Sleep well tunnocks

tunnocksreturns2019 · 21/10/2019 01:43

Okay good news in that the x rays didn’t show anything wrong 😊 but puss still in pain and vet a bit mystified. She’s hoping pain is caused by bruising from the trauma rather than spinal issue not showing up on general x rays. She’s going to up his painkiller and let me know how he is in the morning. Then they may want to do more detailed x ray of his spine if pain doesn’t improve.

Feeling more positive. Back to sleep until 6.15 now!

That a good outcome. Sleep well.

SamBeckettslastleap · 21/10/2019 02:10

Sounds hopeful then, good luck kitty.
You are a superwoman to have found the strength to keep going.

PatricksRum · 21/10/2019 02:12

You're not pathetic, OP, you're strong!
As a single mother I empathise, doing it all alone is very difficult.
Glad to hear dcat's x-rays looked well, hopefully dcat feels better in thd morning (and you too).
Sleep well Thanks

QOD · 21/10/2019 04:06

Good news so far 👍🏻
