What do you serve with cottage pie?

Love homemade cottage pie! Thinking I should make it this week but not sure what to serve with it. I usually do a pile of mixed veg. But just wondering what everyone else does? I know it doesn't really need anything extra.

Yorkshire pud sounds very odd with it too

StealthPolarBear · 20/10/2019 15:26

It is! But any excuse

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 20/10/2019 15:29

Peas & carrots.

Yorkshire pud would totally work...how have I never thought of that before??!

Baked beans

Sashkin · 20/10/2019 15:47

Peas. But I put swede and carrots in the mash too, so it isn’t just plain potatoes.

reginafelangee · 20/10/2019 15:54

Baked beans or green veg.

x2boys · 20/10/2019 15:58

I put mixed veg in the pie I don't serve it with anything

BlouseAndSkirt · 20/10/2019 22:13

What kind of heathen or savage serves baked beans with cottage pie?

Never mind yorkshires, or spaghetti hoops on top of the mash 😱

Slowchirp · 20/10/2019 22:15

green beans or
kale or similar
and a dollop of HP sauce

MegGriffin · 20/10/2019 22:50

Baked beans

JustBeingJobless · 20/10/2019 23:07

Red cabbage and cauliflower cheese. I put peas and carrots in it usually. Sometimes, however, I make a version with mince, onions, baked beans and topped with cheesy mash. With that, we’d have garlic mushrooms and crusty bread.

notso · 20/10/2019 23:09

I cook carrots in the cottage pie and usually serve peas and broccoli or green beans with it.
One of my favourites ways to make it is to put a layer of cauliflower cheese or cheesy leeks between the meat and the mash but DH and the kids don't like it that way at all.

I make quite a dry pie so serve lots of gravy with it too.

Boobahs · 20/10/2019 23:15

I put onions, peas and carrots in mine so any other veg I have... green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, sweetcorn, cabbage, etc.... with extra gravy. Never heard of garlic bread with it before!

ineedaholidaynow · 20/10/2019 23:28

Can I ask why people have extra potato with it?

WomensRightsAreContraversial · 20/10/2019 23:34

Green beans for me, and ketchup on the pie because I'm wrong like that!

Love some of these suggestions though, and am now craving cottage pie!

x2boys · 21/10/2019 09:14

I made one at the weekend and topped it with ( Ice land) carrot and Swede mash very nice it was too!.

Skyejuly · 21/10/2019 09:16

We have gravy, bread and green veg!

Lessstressedhemum · 21/10/2019 11:09

Green beans and cabbage

Bluesheep8 · 21/10/2019 11:42

Carrots and peas are already in it for me. So I serve with cabbage or broccoli and plenty of gravy.

Bluesheep8 · 21/10/2019 11:43

Oh and a big fat dollop of ketchup!
