What do you serve with cottage pie?

Love homemade cottage pie! Thinking I should make it this week but not sure what to serve with it. I usually do a pile of mixed veg. But just wondering what everyone else does? I know it doesn't really need anything extra.

Carrots and broccoli

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/10/2019 18:48

@Remus your point is? Grin

Dogsaresomucheasier · 19/10/2019 18:49

Sweat some chopped leeks in a knob of butter and stir in a handful of grated cheddar, then spread over the mashed potato layer. It’s a Delia idea.

With chips and backed beans is the best!

twinkledag · 19/10/2019 18:50

*baked

Cakeweek · 19/10/2019 18:50

Veg in the cottage pie: carrots, onion & mushrooms
Veg with the cottage pie: peas, brocolli and/ or Savoy cabbage

Crusty bread if you have it.

DeathMetalMum · 19/10/2019 18:51

Babycorn, and peas. We add Savoy cabbage sometimes as well.

BertieBotts · 19/10/2019 18:53

Nothing, I hate boiling veg, what a faff that is. The whole point of cottage pie is you can make it and then leave it in the oven for ages and do something else! Not faff around in the kitchen peeling and cooking veg.

PlugUgly1980 · 19/10/2019 18:54

Carrots and green beans/cauliflower/broccoli or sprouts.

Lilopup · 19/10/2019 18:57

Spaghetti hoops and cheese on top of the pie, yum yum. Im really intrigued by the garlic bread, will have to try this next time.

pourmeanotherglass · 19/10/2019 18:59

I put the veg in it and just serve as it is. Tonight I'm doing the vegan lentil version with sweet potato mash to eat in front of strictly.

ineedaholidaynow · 19/10/2019 19:00

Why are people adding extra potato in various forms, when there is mash on top?

Do people have a very small portion of cottage pie and then add extras? Our portions would fill the plate. Mine usually has peas, carrots and tomatoes in and then cheese and leeks in the mash. Surely that is enough. And the sauce is quite wet so don't need added gravy

7Worfs · 19/10/2019 19:04

Shredded white cabbage and carrots salad (essentially coleslaw but without mayo).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/10/2019 19:05

I do like extra gravy. Ours is a veggie one, and I feel it needs extra gravy to make it feel 'meaty' enough, although I realise how daft that sounds!

MidnightMystery · 19/10/2019 19:06

Usually just the pie it's a one pot meal! Sometimes put broccoli on the side if I'm feeling hungrier than usual.

Someonesayroadtrip · 19/10/2019 19:06

@ineedaholidaynow ...leeks in the mash sounds amazing! I usually have half veg and half cottage pie on my plate, our portion are still quite big probably though.

Baked beans!!!! It’s a source of major contention between my husband and I as to whether this is the most gloriously delicious winter warming combo or just plain weird.

57Varieties · 19/10/2019 19:10

Green beans/broccoli

My mouth is watering at the thought of cottage pie! I’m making one this week now! Not had one for ages

57Varieties · 19/10/2019 19:12

I love the mash with creme fraiche a la hairy bikers/dieters

I also make a lentil one (just with tinned lentils) with a sweet potato mash. Yumminess

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 19/10/2019 19:14

Green veg. Any veg, really, but green goes best.

Shannith · 19/10/2019 19:15

Brown sauce. Really. Takes it to a new level.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 19/10/2019 19:16

Green veg here.

thepointoforder · 19/10/2019 19:18

Broccoli and red cabbage. I put peas in the mince and a layer of mashed carrot under the potato. My mum and aunt used to do it and it's a game changer!

cookiemonster5 · 19/10/2019 19:21

Nothing. It's a complete meal in one when u make it. Full of veg and with potatoes on top you don't need anything else.

Paddingtonthebear · 19/10/2019 19:23

Green beans or peas
