What do you serve with cottage pie?

Love homemade cottage pie! Thinking I should make it this week but not sure what to serve with it. I usually do a pile of mixed veg. But just wondering what everyone else does? I know it doesn't really need anything extra.

Just had to rummage in the freezer to see if I had any mine after reading this thread. Suddenly Sunday lunch is going to be a bit more winter comfort food tomorrow.

My mum served it with crispy stuffing balls. This is a tradition I have continued - although garlic bread sounds lovely too!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/10/2019 19:29

My Mum always did baked beans. Sometimes she warmed a tin of Italian tomatoes instead and steamed some broccoli.

MsChatterbox · 19/10/2019 19:32

I add peas and diced carrots to my cottage pie and don't serve anything with it. Its a complete dish with meat veg and potato 😊

MsChatterbox · 19/10/2019 19:34

Please ignore my comment I should have read the thread through first.

raspberryk · 19/10/2019 19:34

Depends how much veg is in the filling sometimes nothing but extra gravy. I like a dryish mix in summer with coleslaw, or more gravy in the mix and leaks and peas in winter.

doginthekitchen · 19/10/2019 19:37

Pickled beetroot - but it is getting harder to find a suitably acidic beetroot - they all have too much sugar in them.

PumpkinKing · 19/10/2019 19:39

Usually kale or savoy cabbage. Plus bread & butter.

meow1989 · 19/10/2019 19:39

Mines got carrots and peas in so served by itself. Actually I've just finished a plate Grin

Otherwise kale maybe? Or cabbage?

Nonnymum · 19/10/2019 19:39

Just lots of veg.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 19/10/2019 19:48

Brocolli or cabbage for me, peas for DH

holycrumpets · 19/10/2019 20:05

Red cabbage or beetroot. Mmmmmmmmmmm

SpamChaudFroid · 19/10/2019 20:06

Petits pois or broccoli and extra gravy, which has to be Bisto Best, surely the king of instant gravies.

I've seen people eat it with baked beans! And ketchup! Envy

Proseccoagain · 20/10/2019 12:39

Peas and gravy. DC when little had baked beans with it. If it's properly made with lamb, I like a bit of mint sauce with it.

Proseccoagain · 20/10/2019 12:41

Sorry, cottage pie is beef, shepherd's pie is lamb. Misread thread title.

georgialondon · 20/10/2019 12:44

Just peas

chemenger · 20/10/2019 12:45

Pickled beetroot sounds nice, I agree, though, with a PP that it is usually too sweet nowadays. I should make my own I suppose.

cricketmum84 · 20/10/2019 13:02

I love it with beans. I know that's a bit weird!

CileyMayRhinovirus · 20/10/2019 13:07

Cottage pie I put LOADS of veg in it and then just have something green on the side like green beans, cabbage or broccoli. The kids like carrots and peas and Yorkshire's with it and a little bit of Bisto.

Unluckyinlove2019 · 20/10/2019 13:32

Came on to say what cricketmum said. Baked beans with either cottage or shepherds pie is yum!

Twirlypoos · 20/10/2019 13:32

Onion gravy
Baby carrots and petit pois or mashed swede/carrots
Sweated leeks and/or sprouts

No bisto/beans/spaghetti hoops (wtf) /ketchup or extra potato (why?) 🤢

emwithme · 20/10/2019 13:42

Carrots and cabbage/broccoli/something green on night 1
Baked beans on night 2.
