What do you still buy that you're convinced no one else still does?

Title may have been a slight exaggeration, but is there anything you continue to purchase ( be it groceries, cleaning products, home bits etc) that is maybe seen as outdated, useless, old fashioned or just generally unliked by the masses , that you continue to buy?

Mine is Fisherman's Friend. I love them but have never found anyone else who still buys them!

Dry custard powder cooked up with tins of fruit for dessert.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 17/10/2019 11:32

I love you all.

Lots of mine have already been mentioned but I also like

Valances (the flouncier the better)
Petticoats (and vests as PP said)
Stockings/tights with seams at the back of leg
Badedas/Fenjal (if I could get those little squares of Fern bath cubes I would die happy)
Hankies with days of the week on
Those scratchy blankets with a satin trim (that give off enough sparks you can see in the dark)
I don't even drink but I have decanters and put port in one at Christmas
Those handwhisks you turn the handle and it has two beaters (yes, I use this to make Angel Delight)
Butter knives and fish forks (I have a canteen of special cutlery, again a Christmas thing)
Placemats
Napkins with personalised napkin rings.
Avocado dishes
If I had a real fire I would have toasting forks

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 17/10/2019 11:35

I would also love a rotary phone (I would take my earring out to use it and dial the number with a pencil, which I would then poke back into my hair, which is held up with old fashioned combs)

Redrosesandsunsets · 17/10/2019 11:41

Yes to scratchy blankets with satin trim! My favourite. I also still use hot water bottles. Anyone else?

RhinoskinhaveI · 17/10/2019 11:50

I am a devotee of hankies and flannels but I don't know about milk of magnesia, I prefer to use a much more old-fashioned remedy... the good old enema 🙈

BessMarvin · 17/10/2019 12:28

Lots of people saying tinned sardines but what about mackerel? I've eaten it forever.

Also I really must buy some evaporated milk as I remember my DM adding a tin when making jelly and it was delicious!

NewYoiker · 17/10/2019 13:14

@dowser 40ml at bed time. Do not take it any other time! Total carnage in the morning but I go from looking 9 months pregnant to completely flat.

NewYoiker · 17/10/2019 13:18

@Trewser yes! Kim kardashian's make up artist uses it, as do quite of lot of the professional artists who make over celebrities.

Shake it well, and put a thin layer of it on your face and rub it in until you can't see it any more. It basically sinks into the skin and creates a total barrier meaning oily skin won't affect the look of the makeup and it's prefect for mattifying :)

nettie434 · 17/10/2019 13:35

Kim kardashian's make up artist uses it, as do quite of lot of the professional artists who make over celebrities.

This is such a popular thread that it’s hard to keep up with it. I eventually found Trewser’s post about milk of magnesia which led to New Yoiker’s reply about its use by celebrity make up artists but not before I’d had a happy moment imagining Kim Kardashian going to bed with tinned sardines and evaporated milk slopped all over her face Blush

SweetMarmalade · 17/10/2019 13:38

Ooh I love the milk of magnesia fave skin advice, must give it a go! Thanks Newyoiker! I also have Crohn’s but I’m on strong meds for it so might give it a miss for that.

Someone mentioned bath cubes! That takes me back! 80’s hair, stiff as a board, next morning I’d have a powdery coating in my hair, dipped my hair in bath cube water and it magically disappeared! No idea why.

SweetMarmalade · 17/10/2019 13:39

Not sure where the random ‘fave’ came from Grin

catnidge · 17/10/2019 13:44

Lots of things here we still love
Tinned sweet macaroni delicious!
Sardines always in oil
Cornflour
Pearl barley for stews and soups
Strawberry flan and quick gel here.
Hankies, why chuck tissues away.
Bar soap, the blue pears
Washing powder

A lot of the things above are from childhood. The things from childhood I definitley don't do
Hearts
Kidneys
Fried spratts
Rabbit pie
Laundry startch.

NewYoiker · 17/10/2019 13:46

@SweetMarmalade yes me too. I was about to give up. I really was! I had a blockage that lasted 7 weeks and was scheduled for surgery to remove a bit of my bowel and my ibd nurse suggested trying that as a last resort so I sent DH out to get some thinking it would do f all like everything else I'd tried but by the morning everything had loosened and I nearly filled the loo 😳

SweetMarmalade · 17/10/2019 13:53

That’s bloody amazing NewYoiker Shock definitely one to remember! So pleased it’s worked for you and good that it’s been advised by your IBD nurse. I’m the opposite, generally go far too much iykwim, so it wouldn’t be right for me at this time. Biologics and enemas (joy) are keeping me ‘sort’ of ok for now Flowers

justasking111 · 17/10/2019 13:54

You lot have had me bringing out the silver polish and brasso this morning. Have cleaned a few pieces already. Grin

NewYoiker · 17/10/2019 14:00

@SweetMarmalade yes that's the worst but I had all the other lovely symptoms of Crohns including blood and mucous and going to the loo many many times a day but was just so impacted.

I'm starting infliximab soon hopefully to try and dampen it a bit 😭

ginghamtablecloths · 17/10/2019 14:50

I prefer flat sheets rather than fitted and use quilts instead of duvets. Proper hankies and flannels. Oh, and vests - long sleeved in winter.
I cut the lawn with an old-fashioned push-me pull-you lawn mower.

TheSilveryPussycat · 17/10/2019 15:30

Liver sausage in a roll lke the cheese sausage upthread. Not seen any for decades.

Milk of Magnesia fan here, but having spent my childhood getting used to its plain flavour, I hate that it's now flavoured with mint. Mint and kipper burps are awful.

Also linen sheets and proper woolen blankets - though l don't use them that often as they are a bit of a pain to make the bed with. But in the winter the blankets are lovely and heavy to sleep under, which I like. I also use one as an under blanket in the winter.

Tinned sardines, but they must be in oil. (Pilchards in tomato sauce - yuck! Ate them as a child, had to more or less choke them down.)

TheSilveryPussycat · 17/10/2019 15:31

And we had to eat the bones for the calcium.

Swisskit · 17/10/2019 15:51

Gravy browning. Advocaat. Washing powder (works so much better than tabs or liquid and involves no plastic).

Ink.

Choclips · 17/10/2019 15:59

Dream topping , makes the ultimate triffle
Imperial leather soap bar
Ovaltine
Beryl creme. In a red pot for a glossy hold-marketed for men but bloody great for curly hair. Stops frizz

SweetMarmalade · 17/10/2019 16:08

@NewYoiker - hope it works for you, it’s worked really well for some. Infliximab started off well for me but then it tapered off. They switched me to Vedolizumab, slow burner but it seems to have stopped the blood and mucous for now. Had to top up with Pred enemas inbetween though.

Good luck Flowers

BoogieFeet · 17/10/2019 16:20

Kippers
Ginger wine
Epsom salts
Semolina
Squashed fly biscuits (garibaldi)

LittleAndOften · 17/10/2019 20:20

I bloody love squashed fly biscuits Grin

GGsMumma · 17/10/2019 20:55

Anyone know where I can get Horlicks tablets? Grin
