a daughter really big for her age

HAPPYMOM363 · 09/10/2019 12:22

She is only 11 and 176cm and 84kg. I am only 155cm and 45kg. It looks really oddSmile She plays basketball and netball and does really well.

It's impossible to find age appropriate cloths.

She used to hate being this big but now she loves it. Would she stop growing or grow up a few more inches??Grin

The BMI is a somewhat inexact measure, and I would not say somebody had a weight problem just on the basis of a BMI figure.

Teateaandmoretea · 12/10/2019 08:37

I'm not really understanding the thing about muscle mass. My dd is just turned 11, is 140cm and weighs 29kg. She does 5 dance classes a week - street, acro, modern, tap and ballet (all just for fun) and does elite squad gymnastics - four hours a week training during term time, many more hours in school holidays. Why wouldn't she weigh more due to muscle mass? She's just starting puberty, but no periods yet.

Surely the point is that your dd is naturally an ectomorph so is naturally slight with less muscle. Mine is 2/3 kilos heavier than yours I'm not sure exactly but 7cm taller so probably similarish build. She has muscle but very slight build (tiny wrists, sourcing a Fitbit was Confused) and so doesn't weigh much. She's also very active does athletics, cross country and swim training 3 times a week.

What time is the appointment OP?

HAPPYMOM363 · 12/10/2019 10:29

@Namechangeforthiscancershit two hours later. Pray for my dd.

Hopefully your GP will give you some advice.

Bornforgood · 12/10/2019 13:50

Omg. OP, your dd sounds amazing. She is clearly fit. In fact, fitter than I think, 90% of her age group. Clearly has a potential to bring Olympic Gold. I don't think there is weight issues here but it is good that you are going to a doctor.

I am thinking how @JockTamsonsBairns dd would look next to OP's dd despite being same age.Smile

picklemepopcorn · 12/10/2019 14:51

How have you got on? I hope the GP managed to keep it positive for her!

HAPPYMOM363 · 12/10/2019 15:32

GP said she is completely healthy, no weight problem. He is saying that she is really a fit girl, so there is nothing to worry about her weight.
For growth related checkup, he refered her to an endocrinologist.
Hoping that things would be good there too.

ThreeLittleDots · 12/10/2019 15:34

Glad to hear you have the referral to check her hormones. Fingers crossed.

HAPPYMOM363 · 12/10/2019 15:42

@Bornforgood Yeah my dd is big. It would look really funny.

OP posts:
picklemepopcorn · 12/10/2019 15:55

That's reassuring- endocrinologist just to be on the safe side, and a GP's agreement that she isn't overweight.

HAPPYMOM363 · 12/10/2019 15:59

@bornforgood don't be so ridiculous. It's really imotionally hearting for a 11 year old.

OP posts:
RoseyOldCrow · 12/10/2019 16:09

Such good news, HAPPYMOM.
I'm really pleased that she has the Endo referral to be certain of the important details.

And I'm also pleased that the judgey PPs who said how large & wrong she is, how she should fit into the same narrow groups as everyone else, are completely effing wrong themselves.

Enjoy her athletic prowess & continue to be a wonderful, inspiring parent to her x

BertrandRussell · 12/10/2019 16:22

Don’t let her do somersaults like that again unless she is in a gym and being spotted. They can be very dangerous.

JockTamsonsBairns · 12/10/2019 20:43

@bornforgood sorry, I'm struggling to get a sense of whether you're joking/being sarcastic or not?
My dd seems quite average sized for her age - perhaps slightly smaller than her classmates, but not by a hugely noticeable amount. I spent most of my day today at a gymnastics event, and she was very much on a par size-wise with her peers of a similar age. I definitely didn't see anyone in the 85kg bracket, so I'm not sure how other 11 year olds are building this muscle mass.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 12/10/2019 21:02

Good that you've been reassured and that you've got the referral you need.

Please don't let your DD do these flips. She's not in the Olympics, she's not warmed up and she's not supervised. As someone said, you must have very high ceilings jealous looking at mine which definitely aren't

Aridane · 12/10/2019 21:03

Shit - I'm sorry - but a 13 stone 11 year old and the doctor says it's all fine?

Aridane · 12/10/2019 21:08

This is what the NHS BMI calculator says when you plug in the basic stats for OP's child

a daughter really big for her age
HAPPYMOM363 · 13/10/2019 05:48

@Aridane I understand what you are thinking. But, when doctor says she is completely healthy, I don't worry at all now.

OP posts:
MustardScreams · 13/10/2019 05:52

I think you need a new dr.

HAPPYMOM363 · 13/10/2019 06:03

Why? @MustardScreams. I got the endo referral and taking her to endocrinologist this wednesday.

OP posts:
Bornforgood · 13/10/2019 06:16

@JockTamsonsBairns I was just kidding there. Take it easy.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/10/2019 06:16

Op where do you live? I'm just nosy about the healthcare system where you can get an endo appointment within 3 days. in the UK you'd be waiting a lot longer.

To be honest I'm surprised that your GP felt your daughters weight was healthy. I could understand it if her BMI showed she was slightly overweight as that could be explained by the fact that she is very athletic. But she is way heavier than that. She weighs the same as my son who is 21, 188 Cms (6'2") and very sporty.
