What time does your child's secondary school finish?

Just need to figure out whether I'm being unreasonable or it's the norm for schools to finish at 2pm?

Is this secondary? In my experience of working in schools, such an early finish is often due to poor behaviour.
They cut the amount of free time at breaks and lunch back to the minimum, so that students have very little time in which to mess about outside of the classroom.

8.50am-3.30pm : Mon-Fri - NI

Baguetteaboutit · 24/09/2019 18:34

Thanks Autumn I didn't know that. I do go around with my eyes closed though Grin

DS's school day has just increased by 40 mins per day (but he gets an additional 2 weeks holiday each year). It's now 8.30 - 3.35 for 4 days, 2.45 finish on 1 day.

WellTidy · 24/09/2019 18:35

A local state secondary school to me finishes at 2:20. The day starts at 7:45. It is part of their agreement with the LA due to traffic congestion in the mornings, the idea is that the school day starts before the traffic gets heavy, so the school isn’t contributing to greater congestion.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/09/2019 18:36

3.20, they stay for homework club or any after school club they are doing and then get the mini bus to drop off point at 4.30.

Finish early due to poor behaviour? My sisters last job finished early on Fridays (she must have been bad)

Butterfly02 · 24/09/2019 18:48

08:20 to 2:50 works great for lots of locals as their older kids then go to collect primary school kids on way home.

0840-1540 mon-the
0840-1450 wed thur fri
No idea why though, changed a few years ago

I went to a school that was 8.45-2.15. We had the same lesson time as the later-finishing schools, but only one 20-minute break all day. Children who were entitled to free meals had to stay after school to get their food. It was a terrible school in many different ways.

IfNot · 24/09/2019 19:12

Our school doesn't really contribute much to traffic as almost all the kids walk and most parents work anyway.
They have hours after school to get up to all sorts. It's good if they have a lot of clubs and things but a lot of them just hang about the streets or game for hours.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/09/2019 19:14

8.50 to 3.50

KurriKawari · 24/09/2019 19:16

DD school was 08:40 to 15:00 every day with after school clubs.
Now three weeks into the academic year they have decided that one day a week it will be 08:40 to 14:00, with no after school clubs, no access to library, no provision whatsoever on that day. I think maybe it would have annoyed me less if I hadn't got a "tough" and "well what can you do?" response and a shrug from the senior leadership team about it.

850 to 1440. They are supposed to have voluntary enhancement time until 1520 but 15 year old DS never attends so is always home early. I think they should make it compulsory enhancement time!

coconuttelegraph · 24/09/2019 19:18

Ime secondary age children don't need after school provision, is there a reason she can't go home at 2pm?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 24/09/2019 19:21

They could be 11 (potentially 10) and home by themself?

Bunnybigears · 24/09/2019 19:24

They shouldn't be 10 at secondary school, they should be 11 and being home alone at 11, unless SEN or other mitigating circumstances, is perfectly normal.

Taswama · 24/09/2019 19:25

3.05
He lets himself in and someone is home by 5.30 at latest.

Fookinwot · 24/09/2019 19:26

2.55pm every day apart from Wednesdays when they finish 2.30

TSSDNCOP · 24/09/2019 19:27

Registration at 8.25, last period ends at 16:15. Private secondary.

KurriKawari · 24/09/2019 19:28

School isn't in walking distance and a mission via public transport. I spent so much thought into which school weighing all the pros and cons, going to open evenings, speaking to parents, asking all the right questions. And then to have this sprung on us is really inconsiderate of the school. I think I just needed to vent because the school obviously don't care.

OrchidInTheSun · 24/09/2019 19:30

There's a school near me that finishes at 2.30ish every day because they have v short lunch times. Having a load of teenagers bored and hanging around for 2-3 hours until their parents finish work doesn't do anyone any favours imo

Answerthequestion · 24/09/2019 19:31

I can’t believe how early these schools finish. Ours is 8.30 - 4. Primary 8.30 -3.30

KindergartenKop · 24/09/2019 19:32

It may be a funding issue- they can give the teachers ppa time in this period and then use them to teach pupils all the rest of the week. Weird to do this 3 weeks into the year though!

usernamexox · 24/09/2019 19:32

2.50
Lessons start 8.30
