Argument with dd on how to pronounce houmous. We say hyoumus. She says friends at school all say hummus. Looked online it said hoomus. How do you say it?

How did you even get to saying "hymous"??

I say hummus

MrsLEB · 19/09/2019 07:07

PrincessSarene · 19/09/2019 07:08

We say hummus

thatwasMauijustmessingaround · 19/09/2019 07:08

Hummus

SouthWestmom · 19/09/2019 07:10

Is hummus 'hum - us'
What is the way you say it? 'Huh - you -mus'
I think we say 'hoo-mus'

experimentnumber626 · 19/09/2019 07:10

Huhmus

MustardScreams · 19/09/2019 07:11

Hummus

What is hyoumous?!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 19/09/2019 07:11

Huh muss

PullingMySocksUp · 19/09/2019 07:11

My mum says hyu muss. Maybe that’s the way it was said when it first appeared and older people have stuck to it.

I say hoo with an oo like in book.

chergar · 19/09/2019 07:11

Whomis

PullingMySocksUp · 19/09/2019 07:12

Or a bit closer to huh actually.

Dollywilde · 19/09/2019 07:12

Parents say hoo-mus, but we (like our friends) say hum-mus

MarthasGinYard · 19/09/2019 07:12

Hum us

CountFosco · 19/09/2019 07:13

Who-mus

AmIThough · 19/09/2019 07:13

Hum-mus exactly like it's spelt...

booksandwool · 19/09/2019 07:13

Might you be unconsciously mixing it up with a kind of soil? www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/humus/

BertieBotts · 19/09/2019 07:13

Like the hum sound in human? No. I say hoom-us with the oo as in book, rather than cool.

EskewedBeef · 19/09/2019 07:14

Hummus. It's often spelled like that, so I say it that way.

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 19/09/2019 07:14

The Greek way which is Houmi

CherryPavlova · 19/09/2019 07:16

HOOM-uhs.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 19/09/2019 07:17

huh-mus. The initial bit rhymes with the vowel sound in wood rather than the vowel sound in bus iykwim.

When my DC were younger we watched an episode of Delia Smith where she made hummus and she pronounced it "hoomoosse" which the DC found hilarious. For the next few weeks the kept pronouncing it like that but fortunately the novelty wore off.

BertieBotts · 19/09/2019 07:18

Reasoning: It's spelt either houmous or hummus. Human is pronounced that way because effectively the single consonant and the a turns hum into a split phoneme (hume = hyoom). That doesn't work with either of the spellings of houmous.

It can't be hum-muss either because that doesn't fit with the spelling houmous.

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/09/2019 07:19

I can’t even make out how you’re saying it.

I say hoom-us but it’s a short oo like an u

threesixnine · 19/09/2019 07:20

Ketch-up

Teacakeandalatte · 19/09/2019 07:27

My mum says hyu muss. Maybe that’s the way it was said when it first appeared and older people have stuck to it.
Maybe that is the case with me? My mum has always loved Mediterranean food so we started having it when she first found it in the shops in the early 80s.
