How do you pronounce Houmous

Argument with dd on how to pronounce houmous. We say hyoumus. She says friends at school all say hummus. Looked online it said hoomus. How do you say it?

*says it!
I say Humm-us, and would eat it by the bucket load if allowed!

peachgreen · 19/09/2019 08:41

"hyoumuss" just makes me think of Ann Teak in Gigglebiz!

Winesalot · 19/09/2019 08:42

Growing up in Australia it was spelt houmus and it was more of a short o sound. I posted a link before that is very helpful.

I think it largely depends on which community introduced houmus and how they pronounce it. I think maybe the Lebanese community introduced it into Australia.

MrsDimmond · 19/09/2019 20:21

Winesalot I'm watching Australian masterchef and they are making houmous - all pronouncing it hommus!!

CarysRed · 19/09/2019 20:22

Hum-mus

Winesalot · 20/09/2019 10:18

Yes @MrsDimmond I saw that too. I know I am picked up on pronunciation all the time here in the UK and the differences between Australian pronunciation and English. Pasta is a great example.

Hence my putting up a link that I think will shows more of the correct pronunciation 🙂 . It does not seem to be a clearly defined sound so it can go either way.

Winesalot · 20/09/2019 10:20

Strangely my DD gets told off at school for mispronouncing emu!! Massive eye roll.

SamBeckett · 20/09/2019 13:06

Hum ( as hum a song ) us ( you and me )
Cus Cus rhyme wiith bus bus.
La San ya
My DH always pronounced the W but drop the H in whole so it sounded like wole.

MKRNZ · 20/09/2019 13:22

First part: A short "oo" (to rhyme with book or wood rather than room or loom).
Second part: A sort of "oos/us" to rhyme with the ending of thoughtless rather than mess or less.

lazylinguist · 20/09/2019 13:26

Hoomus, but with a short 'oo' like the vowel sound in 'push'.

Hyoomus is how you pronounce the word 'humus', which is soil! I've never heard anyone pronounce the food hummus/houmous that way.

LemonPrism · 20/09/2019 13:30

Hahahahaha nobody says hyomus?!? It's hummus

lazylinguist · 20/09/2019 13:31

The trouble with all these 'la zan ya' vs 'la zahn ya' arguments is that neither matches the actual Italian pronunciation, which is somewhere on the continuum between a flat English a as in 'cat' and a long English 'ah' as in 'bath' (if you're a southerner!). So arguably neither is really correct. You either pick one or the other, or attempt to say it like a proper Italian and risk sounding like a pretentious arse!

LemonPrism · 20/09/2019 13:32

@jackparlabane cut and put sound the same in my accent

Rollerbird · 20/09/2019 13:40

Yeah, cut, put, wood, bus, humbug all the same short uh sound!! 😁

Stravapalava · 20/09/2019 13:41

Hoo-muss. That's how my Greek in laws pronounce it.

runoutofnamechanges · 20/09/2019 14:13

I say hoo-muss in English. The correct Arabic pronunciation is similarish but with a soft h that sounds like you are exhaling though.

For falafel, I say fuh-lah-ful and cooss-cooss with the oo like book for couscous. But in arabic they are more like fuh- la -fil and cuhss-cuhss with the uh a bit shorter than the oo sound.

LauraLooDerby · 20/09/2019 15:10

I say hummy hums.

MissisBee · 20/09/2019 15:12

I've always said hyoo-mus. Probably because of learning about humus in soil at school, and I was about the same age when I first came across houmous. I did see the Delia episode where she said "who-moos", so often say that for fun!

MissisBee · 20/09/2019 15:13

But then again, my family is known for weird pronunciation - they're the only people that say duvet with a dj sound at the start, like how you'd say due

Doobigetta · 20/09/2019 16:31

I’ve said it to myself so many times reading this thread that I no longer know for sure. But it definitely isn’t “hyoo-muss”.

ALongHardWinter · 20/09/2019 18:33

Hoo-muss.

soundsystem · 20/09/2019 18:45

Some people in my family pronounce it like "hor-mous" which is truly baffling.

Bunnyfuller · 20/09/2019 20:41

Wtf is ‘lar-tay’ or ‘prezzzzzzzo’

Usual UK absolute oblivion to other languages

It’s Lah-Tay and Pret-zo (think Pizza - the double z gives a tz sound - hard stop on the t)

Bunnyfuller · 20/09/2019 20:41

Lattay

Superlooper · 20/09/2019 20:43

Hum us
