Argument with dd on how to pronounce houmous. We say hyoumus. She says friends at school all say hummus. Looked online it said hoomus. How do you say it?

Hummus or H'mmus

MarthasGinYard · 19/09/2019 07:30

It reminds me of when those long crusty

'bag wets' found their way into sainsbo's

My parents still say it Grin

BackToTheOIdHouse · 19/09/2019 07:30

Hum-us.

As a side note, how do we all say cous cous? I say coos coos (the vowel sound as in 'book' if you're not northern), DH says cuss cuss.

Ellapaella · 19/09/2019 07:33

Huh-mus

Blankspace4 · 19/09/2019 07:33

Hummus / cuss cuss

Houuuuwmouuuse has made me chuckle this morning!

PuffHuffle5 · 19/09/2019 07:36

Hum muss - hyumous when I want to annoy my DH Grin

AmIThough · 19/09/2019 07:41

@BackToTheOIdHouse kuss-kuss.
But I'm starting to think maybe I'm just common as my pronunciation of everything just seems to be the easiest version!

I went out for lunch with my Nan yesterday. She kept saying 'lasagne' as 'laz-arn-yuh' and I thought she was joking in the beginning but she wasn't.
For anyone who's wondering, it's 'laz-an-ya'!

HappyParent2000 · 19/09/2019 07:46

Who-moose

motortroll · 19/09/2019 07:53

"Hyumus" is the name for the layer of decaying leaves on the floor of a forest. So it's "hummus" for the chickpea dip!

FenellaMaxwell · 19/09/2019 07:54

My mother says Hugh-Moose and it drives me INSANE.

jackparlabane · 19/09/2019 08:01

Huh-muhs (a schwa like in 'put') in England, hum-uss in America (like the u in cut, for both syllables).

HappydaysArehere · 19/09/2019 08:02

Hoomuss

MrsDimmond · 19/09/2019 08:04

When I say it, the first vowel sound is a short 'oo' i.e. the u sound in 'put' (or in my souther accent, 'book')

I have heard it pronounced with a long oo sound, as in 'who'

But agree that 'hum' as in 'humbug' is probably correct.

I've never heard it sound like 'you' as you seem to suggest in your OP

WanderingMind · 19/09/2019 08:13

Hoo-mus coos-coos laz-an-ya

I feel like making hummus now for lunch! Grin

DramaFarmer · 19/09/2019 08:17

Hoo muss

But the oo as in book, not as in who.

Sandsnake · 19/09/2019 08:23

We say it ‘hummus’. The only other person I’ve heard referring to it as ‘hyoo-mus’ is FIL. He’s not the type to accept that some people say things in different ways and is adamant that only he is right. Him and DH once had an hour long (no exaggeration) argument about it...Confused

Winesalot · 19/09/2019 08:25

Maybe this will help with the hummus debate. It is a bit like the pasta pronunciation debate.

Hoo mus

PEkithelp · 19/09/2019 08:27

Hoo-mus (short oo sound)

ShippingNews · 19/09/2019 08:34

Hummuss. Like PP I think you're confusing it with humus, a type of rich soil for the garden. It's pronounced "hyoomus" .

cranstonmanor · 19/09/2019 08:36

*Reasoning: It's spelt either houmous or hummus. Human is pronounced that way because effectively the single consonant and the a turns hum into a split phoneme (hume = hyoom). That doesn't work with either of the spellings of houmous.

It can't be hum-muss either because that doesn't fit with the spelling houmous.

@BertieBotts*

I like your reasoning (and especially your explanation of human pronounciation) but it's not an English word but Arabic I believe. Doesn't that mean that it should be pronounced the Arabic way? Isn't that hum mus?

nonmerci · 19/09/2019 08:36

Hummus. My DM pronounces falafel fala-fell so I’ve heard it all.

Too funny! My MIL calls bagels "bagelles" because that was what someone told her back in 1970-something. Refuses to admit no one else days it!

Blueuggboots · 19/09/2019 08:39

Huh-mus with the emphasis on the mus.
