Argument with dd on how to pronounce houmous. We say hyoumus. She says friends at school all say hummus. Looked online it said hoomus. How do you say it?

@nonmerci my parents and In-laws also both say fala-fell- it must have been on some 70s tv show and stuck!

Wtf is ‘lar-tay’ or ‘prezzzzzzzo? It’s Lah-Tay

If you have a non-rhotic accent (like most of England does, for example), lartay and lahtay sound identical.

And don't forget broosketta not brooshetta for bruschetta.

I'm kind of a hummus. But my u has a hint of oo?

Lowlandlucky · 21/09/2019 08:22

Hugh mus

I always get confused on these pronunciation posts. I say hummus.

How do you pronounce falafel properly? When people use an 'uh' sound to describe pronunciation I always pronounce it like the u sound in bus, my northern accent does not make it a soft sound.

So, when describing the name Amelia for example, people might say Am-ee-lee-uh and to me that sounds wrong Blush.

Google an Arab saying it. houmm-Moss. There’s no elongation of “o” it’s two short sharp syllables.

It's difficult to phonetically convey sounds in writing, especially when the people reading all have different accents! I think what people are trying to convey with the 'uh' is technically the 'schwa' sound - like the sound the 'a' makes on the beginning of the word 'attention', for example. Using an 'uh' to convey this is problematic because northern and southern Emglish people pronounce the letter 'u' so differently!

Hummoooooose

But just because its originally an Arabic word doesn't mean that it has to be pronounced like that in non,Arabic languages as language evolves. If it's pronounced one way in one area and a different way somewhere else it doesn't mean one is wrong. I pronounce 'bath' differently from my Northern friends. I pronounce 'Paris' differently from my French friend.

We say hum-us.

We also have a theory that all supermarket own-brand houmus is made in the same factory. Whichever supermarket you bu6 it from, it all tastes exactly the same, has exactly the same texture and thickness and is packaged in exactly the same tubs. Only the printed paper sleeve is different.
