How did you manage?

Frequently as a lawyer working on big deals. Work all day then all night - then get couple hours sleep if I was lucky the next day and keep going until finished. Adrenaline! But seriously I actually cut out caffeine because then I wouldnt get the low after the buzz. After about 2am I would get a second wind. Can you keep busy with something or are you just sitting there?

chandlersagirl · 12/09/2019 20:26

12 hour shifts as a HCA frequently , I just kept as busy as possible . If I felt myself dozing I got up, got a drink and walked around checking boring stuff like sinks, tidying leaflets etc . If I was really exhausted I went outside on my breaks .

Coffeeandcrumpet · 12/09/2019 20:27

Do this regularly as have to work nights. Its OK at work when the lights are on, much harder in the dark as your body wants to sleep. Why do you need to stay up all night? Plenty of fluid and snacks is always my plan

Nanna50 · 12/09/2019 20:28

Lots of times, usually with ill people, sometimes my own insomnia, emergency night cover, travelling. Maybe if we know what you need to be doing we could give ideas.

Certainly for me the time between 3 and 5 am is the hardest bit.

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/09/2019 20:29

Yes, for good and bad reasons. Working the night shift, in hospital with my very ill husband, for a couple of parties, finishing my dissertation, in labour. How you feel depends on the reasons you’re doing it.

SpinneyHill · 12/09/2019 20:29

What kept me up all night (in no particular order)
Labour
Drinking
Waiting on someone else to give birth
Waiting on the news someone had died
Crying over heartbreak
Being terrified the ex was gonna pop up
The ex popping up
Drugs
Dancing
Worrying
Attempting to do work I should have done days/weeks ago as it's due the next day(ah uni!)
Bastard arse Insomnia
Manic episodes

Why might you have to stay up though?

HypatiaCade · 12/09/2019 20:32

One-more-episoditis while binge watching whatever box set I was hooked on...

Dangerfloof · 12/09/2019 20:32

I used to just drink coffee, but that no longer works. So keep busy, drink loads (then you need the loo more, keeps you moving) around 2am I get over the hump and can be normal. However the next day I pay for staying up.
As to why, erm sick people, sick myself, insomnia, flights at stupid o'clock, job, noisy neighbours, endless list.

womaninthedark · 12/09/2019 20:32

Single parent and student in the '80s. I slept four hours Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri/Sat and not at all on Wednesday and Sunday. I needed to do that to get through all that needed to be done.

It was very, very bad for my health but I didn't know that at the time.

BishopFrownofStThigh · 12/09/2019 20:33

I feel like a wimp now with all these examples!

It's packing, moving tomorrow so was supposed to have Monday to Thursday this week to do it, but called away on family stuff Monday to Wednesday. Just having coffee break before I start again at 9pm

Printing out my MA thesis. It was 1997 and the motherf*cking word processor typed each letter out individually.

Also, clubbing.

Aldibaldi555 · 12/09/2019 20:33

Another (former lawyer) here. Working all day..... then all night ..... then all day.... not uncommon in City.

Wonder why I quit?!!

littletinybubbles · 12/09/2019 20:33

Only ever for fun - and with lots of ‘help’!

Smotheroffive · 12/09/2019 20:34

With babies! ...and various deliveries!

For degree/various studies and projects completing work

In hospital with dc

Meeting work and study deadlines.

Ways of managing: adrenaline is the best way to stay awake! Although probably not really. Moderate, not too over-frequent or overstrong coffee. Healthy snax and energy boosting treats. Light exercise breaks, just a run up and down the stairs to the loo, regular stops to walk around, fix a drink etc. Fairly busy music. Being very absorbed in work/project/or worry!

Hooe everything is ok for you tonight OP

TheSlugAndLettuce · 12/09/2019 20:34

Coffee
Pepsi
Chocolate
Pro-plus tablets

AlexaAmbidextra · 12/09/2019 20:35

Hundreds of them as a nurse.

SuzieBishop · 12/09/2019 20:35

Mines is nothing like anyone else’s but once when I was 18 and lived in uni halls my Mum&Dad were on holiday and my sister was having a party at home. Ended up staying up all night with them and watching Harry Potter then went to uni the next day and fell asleep in a lecture - while I was sat in the front row so the lecturer slammed a book down in front of me to wake me up! I felt so horrendous that whole day I’ve never done it again and that was 18 years ago!!

forkfun · 12/09/2019 20:35

Many times for fun, once during labour, thankfully never for work.

crosser62 · 12/09/2019 20:36

Night duty, every week.
Coffee
Chocolate
Comfort food
Fluids

NorthEndGal · 12/09/2019 20:36

So many times, fir so many different reasons.
Sometimes partying, sometimes fighting, sometimes looking after a sick child or animal, driving across half of Canada in one go, insomnia, talking to a friend on the phone, working on my art, reading a book, trying to run away, so many ways to stay awake and not one the same as the other.
It all depends why you are up, are you allowed stimulants or not, are you in charge of kids or vehicles, etc

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 12/09/2019 20:36

Printing out my MA thesis. It was 1997 and the motherfcking word processor typed each letter out individually* I remember doing my sister's ,she moved into my flat for the week as it took so long Grin

I didn't sleep for days after having ds. Just could not switch off.

Drinking and clubbing.

Chatting and shagging with dh when we first met Wink

Night shifts

Being up with ill members of the family

Unescorted · 12/09/2019 20:37

Reading a really good book.... only been a couple that have got me through
Pit person for 24 hour mountain bike races - they are really hard, especially the winter ones,

Pinkarsedfly · 12/09/2019 20:37

Yeah, last week with my mum in hospital. It wrote off the next day.

Gone are the days when I could finish a 12 hour night shift, go home, have a shower and a bite to eat then go out drinking for the day.

stucknoue · 12/09/2019 20:39

When I was young, clubbing, more recently travelling (can't sleep on planes) or with insomnia (stupid peri menopause!)

Smotheroffive · 12/09/2019 20:39

Yes, forgot, moving! Getting packed up and then unpacking. Wasnt hard to stay awake as so much to do.

And also dancing and travelling.
