Might have to do this tonight...

How did you manage?

OP posts:
siratcha · 12/09/2019 23:41

Playing video games at a sleepover
Drugs
Hitting a work deadline
Childbirth

Nowadays I struggle to stay awake past 10.

BeneathTheMist · 12/09/2019 23:48

First time was when they first broadcast all night tv (Rock around the clock) in the 80's.

Last time was under much sadder circumstances.

Herefortheduration · 12/09/2019 23:49

teachermam · 12/09/2019 23:49

Studying
Partying
LAbour
Insomnia
Baby
Travel

MartiniDry · 12/09/2019 23:56

Yes, often. The usual stuff - dancing, insomnia, worry, sick children/pets.
I suppose the oddest was when I sat in a pub all night.
There had been a flood and the owner, who was a dear friend, had to stay up all night to supervise the laying of new carpets. I don't recall quite how she managed it but she roped me into staying up with her.

Contrary to what you might imagine we went on to coffee after about 2 am and we were just finishing tea, toast and Marmite at nine in the morning when the carpet fitters had finally finished.

Thank you for putting this question to us all and bringing back memories of a much loved and much missed friend.

heath48 · 13/09/2019 00:04

Yep,40 Years as a Nurse,loved working nights.

Retired now and never go to bed until 2-3am,suits my body clock.

Used to drink loads of tea and the odd energy drink.

AgeLikeWine · 13/09/2019 00:13

I have done all nighters many times, because I am a night owl and often wide awake at 3 am. One that sticks in the memory was 23 June 2016, the night of the Brexit referendum. I remember going to McDonald’s at about 4 am, starving hungry and stunned in disbelief at what I had just watched. A new day was dawning on a changed country.

BishopFrownofStThigh · 13/09/2019 00:14

@MartiniDry oh that's sweet about your friend, it takes you back in time doesn't it. That's amazing actually you managed to get the carpets done by morning.

I'm not doing very well on the packing front Blush

Neighbour coming round at 5am to help shift heavy furniture ready outside and make sure I'm not weeping in a corner. I hate moving!

Dh, ds1 and I stayed up on the night of the Scottish independence referendum, to see the results come in.

I’m self employed and have on several occasions worked through the night to get urgent orders done. There’s something quite satisfying about it for me, but then I’m a night owl so happily stay up until 2-3am on a regular night - making it until morning and then getting the kids off to school before going home for a nap was perfectly doable.

30to50FeralHogs · 13/09/2019 00:19

Yes, election nights I take my duvet downstairs and make up a little bed so I can watch TV and nod off if I get bored!

30to50FeralHogs · 13/09/2019 00:22

Oh yes and a night flight - we were in business so I was hoping to sleep but I just couldn’t - there was a noisy boorish bloke next to me talking really loudly. I was awake for a full 36 hours straight that day, then slept for 16 when I got home Grin

GlamGiraffe · 13/09/2019 00:22

All throughout university I worked 12 hour night shifts.
Missed many a night for that thesis.
Babies...a very ill baby...literally no sleep at all.

Now its work which is a killer. I'm usually running on 20 hour days ATM. Buy I'm not university age anymore and have two children. Those couple of hours of sleep are priceless.
When you're still awake you start to run really slow at this stage but then suddenly get a second wind of energy again. Its part habit but its mostly adrenaline/ knowing you have to do it and how important it is. You have to be as inbred ball as you can be. Tea and coffee stop working as you buzz and cant think. An orange juice works better.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 13/09/2019 00:25

When I was in uni. Went round my mates halls and we ended up talking and watching Babylon 5 till stupid o clock. Went back to my halls, saw I had to be up in 2 hours and thought sod it I'll just stay awake.

Had to get on a train to do a shift in another towns store for my student job, bought coffee. Got on train, spilt coffee down white top. Had to buy new white top when I got off so most of that days wages went down the swanny. Got to uni after, really struggled to keep my eyes open but thought not long now and I can go and sleep...

Nope! Completely forgot we had a course related theatre trip that very evening. I fell asleep during act 2 and woke up seconds before the end so just joined in with the clapping and hoped it was dark enough that no one saw me!

corythatwas · 13/09/2019 00:34

My brother and I used to go out walking all night in the summer when we were teenagers (safe, countryside area).

When I was at uni, we sometimes sat all night in the department library and then went and had breakfast in a caff.

When children have been ill.

And many more times.

LoreleiRock · 13/09/2019 00:36

Partying, studying, working, flying. Loads and loads of times, does not bother me at all.

Brot64 · 13/09/2019 00:43

Yes. All through my under & post grad days, then whilst working as a lawyer (quit). Further, during my MBA days (only because I had DC's by this time and any studying had to happen at night when they were asleep).

Now in finance and still do it (not optional in some cases) . Actually doing so today. Also when jet lagged or binge watching series on Netflix. My body is used to it now, rarely sleep a full night.

BooLooBoo · 13/09/2019 00:43

I have stayed up all night lots of times during my life. I had never thought about it before now, but if it had come up I think I would have assumed it's something most people had done, and probably more than once. Now I'm wondering how many people have never stayed up all night.

I have for a few different reasons. In my early 20s it was mostly after a night out if I'd taken drugs. Cramming in uni work. During labour and giving birth. During a family crisis (we had a lot of those and they seem to happen late at night). Or the times I just couldn't sleep which have been quite a few as well.

How I stayed up depended on the situation. Adrenaline, drugs, coffee.

BooLooBoo · 13/09/2019 00:44

Also a lot during the first year or two of dd's life as she was not a baby who slept.

DuchessAnnogovia · 13/09/2019 00:49

I think I'll probably be up all night tonight. I started painting the bedroom, and I want to get it done by the time DH gets home tomorrow. I'm now at the stage where I'm wondering why the bloody hell did I start decorating!

ChanklyBore · 13/09/2019 10:57

Hundreds of times.

Pleasurable ones - talking all night/being out until the early hours then doing an after party and going straight to work after - saying fuck it and watching films or listening to music all night just because - having sex, travelling, drinking, partying,

Difficult ones - with dying parent, with someone overdosing, sitting in a&e. Countless pavement pounding nights with babies who won’t sleep. More countless ones with toddlers. If you count 1-2 hours of sleep as staying up all night, you could double those. Then when they were sick.

Standard ones - working through the night for employers, working through the night for my own business. Studying through the night regularly to get a degree.

How did it go OP?

Frith2013 · 13/09/2019 10:58

Fairly frequently. I’ve never quite mastered sleeping properly.

glittertissues · 13/09/2019 11:00

Only stayed up all night twice.

The night just after my baby was born - stayed awake all night despite being shattered I was just buzzing.

And the night a grandparent passed away.

Sparadrap · 13/09/2019 11:05

The best memories of staying up all night were with my best friend. We once met for lunch and ended up staying out until 6am. No drugs, just lots of drinking and enthusiasm for life.

We now both have young children and rarely make it past 11pm on a night out Grin

Good luck with the packing OP x

BeepBeeep · 13/09/2019 11:14

Yes, for several reasons.
Night shift.
Travelling.
Waiting for husband to return home from being away.
Waiting at airport to meet him off a plane that flew, but didn't, then did, then didn't.
Hanging around in airport arrivals overnight when everything is closed in the winter is a struggle, I ended up falling asleep over a table and waking an hour later with half a biscuit stuck to my face......it wasn't even my biscuit!
