How did you manage?

Accidentally stayed up all night watching tv really recently. Didn’t check the time and was so so soooo confused when I looked outside and it was light.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 13/09/2019 22:55

Partying... more partying.... some more partying... giving birth.... looking after sick children.

sorrythisusernameisinuse · 13/09/2019 22:58

With my husband while my FIL was very sick. Me and my SIL took it in shifts. Was very hard

IdiotInDisguise · 13/09/2019 23:00

I used to do it all the time. There is something wrong with me, I am a night owl in extreme.

I could easily miss 2-3 night of sleep in a row without much problem when I was at uni, but now I would die if I don’t sleep at least 2.

Main reasons that keep me awake these days are long conversations with friends abroad, bad or good news, an argument, a good book but most of the times... mumsnet...

EdWinchester · 13/09/2019 23:05

Loads of times at uni - either partying or panicking to get work done.

Also many new years' eves and parties since.

Also when in labour with my first. I paced around the downstairs of my house all night because I didn't want to wake my husband Confused

InDubiousBattle · 13/09/2019 23:10

Many, many times. Much as pp have already said , insomnia, partying, booze, work, kids, bereavement, worry, labour, childbirth..
One I haven't seen on the thread yet is Test Match Special, I've stayed up to listen to the cricket in Australia all night a few times.

EdWinchester · 13/09/2019 23:23

I have just remembered I stayed up all night for the US election results and the referendum - neither of which went as I'd hoped.

EL8888 · 14/09/2019 02:00

Lots of times! Either work, raves, festivals or parties. It doesn’t happen much these days

Biggie123 · 14/09/2019 06:50

@MrsRufusdog789 what a lovely story.

BackToTheOIdHouse · 14/09/2019 07:08

Every Saturday night from 1991 to 1995, pretty much. I used to go to a goth club in London that stayed open until 8am. You could take your own booze in but it used to run out by about 4am, after which you'd drink lots of coffee (it was unlicensed). Then we'd all pile into McDonald's for big breakfasts. We were quite the sight, dozens of knackered goths with wilting Robert Smith hairdos and smudged eyeliner! Then we'd go home and kip for an hour or two before meeting up at the pub. When Sunday licensing changed in about 1993 it was excellent because we could stay in the pub all afternoon without a break! The thought of doing all that now makes me break out in a cold sweat 😂

Also: labour (was in labour for three days so not a whole lot of sleep there!), chatting with DH, and general elections.

Crystal87 · 14/09/2019 08:16

I've stayed up till 5 with babies when they were teething or had a fever after their vaccines.

icebearforpresident · 14/09/2019 08:24

Once, for an early flight. Had to be at the airport at 4am which meant leaving home 3am. I wasn’t driving myself to the airport so the day before, having gotten up at 6.30am for work, I decided just to ‘power through’ so I would sleep on my 14hr flight. Flagged a bit at about 1ish but my man (was a big family holiday) made bacon rolls and coffee which brought me round.

Turns out I can’t sleep on planes. By the time we landed in Cape Town I had been awake for 40hours, I don’t remember arriving at the house we were staying in, just woke up there!

AdmiralJaneway · 14/09/2019 08:29

Twice as far as I can remember - first for my dissertation and I felt very sick/ill the following day. Second for an early flight - that one was fine because it was more relaxing with lots of rest periods if not actually sleeping.

thisisthetime · 14/09/2019 08:57

Yep parties, nights out followed by early start at work, travelling, childbirth and days following. Wouldn’t do it by choice now though although for the latter 2 have done it a few times in last few years in 30s. Everything is easier in your teens and 20s!

Keep hydrated, eat well, and if you can get even a power nap then do it!

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/09/2019 09:00

Life as a vet student running a weekend on equine directly in to ITU shifts.
Now as a vet regularly with patients.
All night balls as a vet student.
In labour.

keepingbees · 14/09/2019 09:01

Occasionally when clubbing back in my teens.
Childbirth.
Sitting up with nocturnal newborn.
Had a few all night phone calls with my now DH when we were first seeing each other.

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/09/2019 12:46

Hope the move went well OP Smile

SilverySurfer · 14/09/2019 13:20

Years ago I worked at a merchant bank and we sometimes did all nighters. Go home, shower and change of clothes and back in to the office. Used to take several nights to catch up on the missed sleep.

It's fine if you keep active - if you sit down for a break it's hard to get motivated again.

coffeeandapastry · 14/09/2019 13:34

Lots of times for lots of different reasons-

Partying- seen the sun rise quite a few times on the walk home 😬 Ahhh, Ibiza 😌 Those were the days. Sort of ha! Labour, DD in hospital with asthma attack several times. I'm sure there's more

coffeeandapastry · 14/09/2019 13:36

Had a few all night phone calls with my now DH when we were first seeing each other.

Aww I forgot those nights Smile

Deathraystare · 14/09/2019 13:38

Homeless. Too scared to sleep! After about a week of that I started to hallucinate! I would be drinking a bottle of water at a bus stop, then go to put the bottle on the table - which did not actually exist and would fall over!

BishopFrownofStThigh · 14/09/2019 15:14

I fell asleep!!!!!! Am useless. Friend woke me up early and luckily I knew the removal people so we did one shift early and the other at teatime.

@ALoadOfTwaddle yes definitely no imminent babies :)

@AnneLovesGilbert thank you, that's kind.

I've only just recovered from norovirus so body a bit weak. It got done, anyway!

Ahh the days when I partied all night then straight into work. I shudder to contemplate that now although was only 7 years ago!

nonmerci · 14/09/2019 16:21

Lots of times. Stayed up all night finishing my dissertation and marking essays. Have done it a fair few times on nights out too. Mostly done it due to my DC though...

LER83 · 14/09/2019 16:28

I stay awake until 4 or 5am more then I should, mostly reading or watching some box set, then get a couple hours sleep before getting up for the day! I'm a night owl and find it really hard to go to bed before 11/11.30pm.
