Might have to do this tonight...

How did you manage?

Damn OP I forgot to put that on my list!
Every move involved usually 2 nights up minimum.
One packing up or cleaning and the next 'just unpacking one more' or cleaning

BishopFrownofStThigh · 12/09/2019 20:40

Thanks @Smotheroffive :)

I'll switch to hot lemon and ginger soon and put on the radio. Lots of energy snacks in.

Often for work (TV producer often in hospitals making shows with doctors)

Now as a single parent (different job) I often work all day, look after DC then work again until 4/5am, couple of hours sleep then start again

Also as a young thing in London, I’d go out all night, pop home for a shower then go to work.

Other than hard drugs, most important things are:

Keep moving
Keep things light and a bit noisy (telly on in the background etc)
Drink enough water
If you get through 2.30am- 5am you’ll get a second wind
Don’t try and drive in the morning

I think if you're actually doing something, I think you'll be ok - it's tomorrow will be the problem. I find when I am busy on a night shift it's all fine, but when I have to write up on computer I just want to fall asleep, and I can't, plus all has to be completed. Driving home is a nightmare though.

dobedobedobedoo · 12/09/2019 20:41

When I started as a junior doctor your weekend started at 8am on Friday and you clocked off at 5pm on Monday. You got no sleep. Coffee, cake, bacon sandwiches., tears, adrenaline.....take your pick. Still do night shifts, just shorter ones.

Stravapalava · 12/09/2019 20:42

I've done night shifts at work. Very quiet shifts, found it very hard about 3-4am. I had to keep getting up and walking around and I wrote an essay one week.

I've stayed up all night taking drugs in my wild younger days, although I don't recommend this. Grin

BentNeckLady · 12/09/2019 20:42

I’ve just got back from a week in Ibiza and stayed up all night every night. I won’t go in to why.

Also night shifts, babies, overnight holiday travelling, lots and lots of raving.

Smotheroffive · 12/09/2019 20:42

....and book episoditis here too

Tltl · 12/09/2019 20:42

Often! Sometimes to work, sometimes to catch up on studying, sometimes just because I want to binge a show on Netflix or play some games Grin

Newmumma83 · 12/09/2019 20:43

@BishopFrownofStThigh

Yes for weeks with just a couple of hours sleep with my colicky son ... bring on the hallucinations... I kid not

Once to be with my dying grandad ( in the night he passed )

once because I was hunting down a mouse ... turned out there wasn’t one I had just thought I heard it

And many times with anxiety

ALittleBitAlexis · 12/09/2019 20:43

Writing around 10k of my dissertation on the last day, after suddenly realising I'd been highlighting passages from articles a lot^^ more than actually writing.

I managed it with Lucozade and sheer blind panic.

Tweetingmagpie · 12/09/2019 20:43

I stayed awake for 6 days once! I took a lot of drugs though!Grin

PhDone · 12/09/2019 20:44

I never have... (28 but no kids)
I get all weepy when really tired, and eventually would just sleep where I am... so I don't think I'd be much use anyway.
I've stayed up til 2/3 a few times while writing my thesis, and til 5 once clubbing, but I felt awful the next day.

Newmumma83 · 12/09/2019 20:44

Although to be fair on the last one would
Often fall asleep at 4 Am and grab a couple
Of hours before work say 3 😂 and I was always just anxious there may have been a reason but those fears never materialise crazy eh

bellsbuss · 12/09/2019 20:44

I was into the rave scene back in the day so it was a regular occurrence.

KitKatCHA · 12/09/2019 20:45

The last Harry Potter book. Got it on the midnight release and stayed up all night and read it in one go. I was just finishing when my husband got up for work Grin

ALittleBitAlexis · 12/09/2019 20:45

For actual tips though, move around regularly to keep yourself moving, get some non-sugary snacks like nuts if you can, and if you drink coffee, that helps too.

PhDone · 12/09/2019 20:45

My brother is in the army, and they do "sleep deprivation training" where they get just a few hours over a week. He said it really funny (but he has a weird s.o.h.), people hallucinating and literally falling down asleep while walking.

SoyDora · 12/09/2019 20:45

Many times. Once went to Vegas for 48 hours and didn’t go to bed at all (would have wasted the limited time we had there!).
Apart from that...

Labour
With an ill child
When I first met DH we sat up all night talking (then went to work)
General nights out drinking
I suffer from insomnia so often have nights where I just can’t sleep at all.

purplepoop · 12/09/2019 20:45

When i had DC2 and when I sat with my mum before she passed away.

Adrenaline. Nothing else.

NerrSnerr · 12/09/2019 20:46

Trying to think here
Many night shifts (nurse)
Drinking
Pulling an 'all nighter' at university doing work
Watching various general elections
Travelling

GlasshouseStoneThrower · 12/09/2019 20:46

Now and then as a student, often as a lawyer, a couple of times for a party.

Try to take a walk and get some fresh air every hour. Don't eat junk, you will regret it. Tea or coffee can help but don't have so much you get jittery.

karenbokaren · 12/09/2019 20:47

Stayed awake for 5 in Miami once. That was the most insane week I've ever had. Glitterball

JapaneseBirdPainting · 12/09/2019 20:48

Many times!

Lawyer here also. Studying (pulling an all nighter.... sometimes with wine and BBC radio world service- happy days). All night working as a human rights lawyer finishing off preparing for a case. As a mother when my DS1 was in ICU. As a mother with Dcs because they needed calpol or fluids or whatever during the night. I usually sat up and watched tv.

Since then recurring insomnia.

I like the silent watches of the night. The early hours have an intimacy of their own.
