Do you know anyone that has been on a TV programme?

Whether it’s a dating one, a quiz show, a talent one like X Factor or reality TV... Do you know anyone that’s been on a TV programme? Or have you?!

I like hearing about what it’s actually like behind the scenes on the programmes. DS is reasonably close with someone who was on Love Island. He said you’re told exactly who to speak to and what to talk about (shock...) and that some of the people who are portrayed as horrible and moody are the nicest people in there.

Any stories of your own?

I know a man who went on Jeremy Kyle for pushing his girlfriend down some stairs and breaking her neck and spine.

But that's about it

One of my mum’s elderly, eccentric, clients was on Deal or No Deal about 10 years ago. She had to keep quiet until after her game had been aired on TV. And the day after it aired she went for her regular appointment with my mum and before anyone had said anything she said “I know. I know. A fucking penny!” Grin

My friends mum was on Supermarket Sweep and my old geography teacher was on Who wants to be a Millionaire - he won fastest finger first round but got a q wrong before the £1k so went home with nothing.

iklboo · 03/09/2019 20:48

I've been on Pointless and The Chase.

Zelda93 · 03/09/2019 20:49

I was on Blind Date with Cilla!! She was lovely ..

PennyDreadfuI · 03/09/2019 20:50

Me!

I used promotional work for films etc. Can't go into detail (very outing!) but I used to go on chat shows, mainly. I was on (among others) This Morning, Big Breakfast, The Word, lots of regional news/magazine shows etc. I'd sum up behind the scenes as being organised chaos! Everyone knows what they have to do and (usually) everything runs smoothly.

The thing that surprised me most was the sets - the sofas/'sitting rooms' that you see on screen are in reality often just a corner of a vast studio with chipboard 'walls' on three sides.

The other thing I found surprising when I first started was that everyone gets their hair/makeup done in the same room - I've sat next to some very famous people in makeup chairs (and got pissed with some of them after the show!).

It was a lot of fun, though live broadcasts could be a bit nerve wracking until I got used to it.

My belly has been on telly, does that count? (and it wasn't OBEM either) I was amazed at the amount of footage that gets filmed, just for a couple of minutes of air time.

opinionminion · 03/09/2019 20:54

My daughter was on a nursery rhyme loop (children's morning TV cant remember the name) on Channel 4 in the 90s. She was in Soldier Soldier won't you marry me ?

zen1 · 03/09/2019 20:54

My old headteacher was on Eggheads and I also know someone who was on Blockbusters back in the day. Also (even further back in the day!) one of my old teachers was one of the people interviewed and chose a hymn on Songs of Praise.

wontletmelogin · 03/09/2019 20:56

Yes someone I know son was on Tattoo Fixers having his #topcunt tattoo covered up Grin

Lots of my colleagues have been on TV too in a professional capacity

i was on the evening news nearly running David Cameron over with a commode

derryrose · 03/09/2019 20:56

Worked with a guy who was obsessed with the first ever series of big brother. Few years later he was on it!

CherryPavlova · 03/09/2019 20:56

Yes. We did Challenge Anneka many years ago. I also did It’s a Knockout. Both made me realise that television programmes are not what they seem.
My sons girlfriend won the jackpot on Pointless. My sister was on University Challenge.

TheDragonFromDreams · 03/09/2019 20:58

Probably outing as I tell everyone but me!

Was on The One Show, and Second Hand Wedding Dresses on TLC. I learned a lot about editing from that one, I looked a right bitch and it wasn’t how it was in filming at all!

Fuma · 03/09/2019 21:04

Ds1 was in a couple of Disney programmes. He only did it because one of his friends asked him to, the time after that first one they invited him to do more. In the end he stopped because they were basically expecting him to be eternally available for an ever changing filming schedule - I think most people are so keen to get their kids on telly that they'll agree to it, but with both parents working and ds1 having other commitments that he was frankly more bothered about, it just became a pain in the arse.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/09/2019 21:07

I've been on Channel 4's "Home From Home" twice … it was a reality TV thing, following families who homeswap for holidays

Fuma · 03/09/2019 21:07

To add, he did enjoy it though. They treat the children very well and are very sweet to them and give them shit loads of insanely expensive freebies.

KnitFastDieWarm · 03/09/2019 21:08

I was on University Challenge a few times, about a decade ago.

  • Jeremy Paxman is shorter than you’d think, and actually very pleasant and funny.
  • The voiceover that booms ‘Smith, Manchester’ etc when someone buzzes in is done live in studio by a bloke called Roger Tilling who is much younger than you’d expect someone with that voice to be.
  • They let panellists keep the sticky light box label with their name on - I still have mine somewhere.
  • It’s surprisingly difficult to say ‘my name is Sarah smith and I’m studying history at leeds’ (or whatever) without pulling a weird face at the camera and/or missing your cue. I came away with a newfound respect for tv presenters!
loutypips · 03/09/2019 21:08

Yes. Me Grin
I was on Kilroy many, many moons ago.

damncats · 03/09/2019 21:09

I was on Songs of Praise when I was a wean and they came to our parish

And I worked with a girl who took her mum on Jeremy Kyle...

tabulahrasa · 03/09/2019 21:12

I know a couple of people that were in the country council, but not doing anything particularly interesting.

My friend was filmed for an SSPCA programme because she adopted a pet they’d filmed being picked up as a stray.

No stories though, about as straightforward as it sounds, lol, they came filmed her pets, chatted to her a bit and left.

tabulahrasa · 03/09/2019 21:13

Oh... I do know a family that have been on Jeremy Kyle a few times, but I’ve never asked them about it - I only know them well enough to say hello and ask how the kids are, that sort of stuff.

Swishyswash · 03/09/2019 21:14

My friend's daughters won Pointless.
They said both presenters were lovely.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/09/2019 21:16

@PoppingOneOutIn2020 that escalated badly!!

An ex-boyfriend went to school with a now A list actor so we used to hang out with them a bit, got papped and walked some red carpets. Was very fun for a while.

Otherwise my friend’s mum was on deal or no deal and I know two sisters who won loads of money on that millionaire show with davina McCall

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 03/09/2019 21:17

ExMIL &ExFIL were on a garden makeover programme about 13 years ago. They haven’t touched the garden since! Grin it’s all wildly overgrown and horrendous.

AllBellsNoWhistles · 03/09/2019 21:18

Many years ago my sister and her husband went on a popular t.v show called Tutti Frutti.
Basically, the man answered the questions and for every wrong answer, his wife took off an item of clothing. A bit like strip poker.
She ended up starkers as did most of the women 😂
