I am having second thoughts about my wasp pub

I bought a wasp pub as we have loads of wasps at the moment and I wanted to be able to eat outside without getting plagued.

I have set it up and we have our first victim trapped. But now I am feeling sorry for it because it can't get out! seems a bit cruel. Sad

DS and DH think it's great but eating your lunch watching insects die isn't going to be fun is it?

I thought you meant you'd set up a tiny pub for wasps so they didn't bother other people. I imagined little bar stools and tiny tiny pints of beer....
I don't like the idea of seeing them squirming round before they die but if its the only thing that gets rid of them when your outside then I'd use it (no help at all sorry)

Mrsjayy · 26/08/2019 12:59

Being stung by a furious wasp isn't great either I know these wasp jar things are not great nobody wants to be intentionally cruel but they have no real food source left at this time of year and will die anyway.

Tiny wasp bar stools Grin

The Buzz Inn ? What’s it’s feedback on TA like ?

exLtEveDallas · 26/08/2019 13:11

Oh, I had exactly the same problem. We did this a couple of years ago, but DD and I hated it within days. DH had to get rid of it in the end because it was so upsetting (God, I am such a wuss). As much as I hate the stingy bastards I just couldn't watch them die so slowly.

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 13:13

The Buzz Inn. Grin He's got a friend in there with him now, so romance might be on the cards.

Trip Advisor might say the drinks are a bit crappy. Water with jam in. Bit early for cracking a beer open.

I thought you were setting up a pub where wasps were encouraged to come and buzz around the customers!

I hate the pointy-arsed bastards with a vengeance, 'but also can't bear the inhumane methods of keeping them at bay.

Would putting an ordinary jar of jam (that they could escape) as a 'decoy' work?

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 13:19

That's how I feel Eve. Hmm

I had 1 trying to get into my cola can the otherday was buzzing about my face i gave in and let the wasp have it !

Mrsjayy · 26/08/2019 13:23

Can you put it down your garden a bit maybe behind the shed

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 13:32

Oh no. We have a fatality. Sad

I have put it by the french windows to stop them getting in the house but I think I will have to relocate it somewhere less visible.

What a fun thread .

Tiny bar stools and tiny tiny pints of beer . lol

OP I get your guilt, somewhat, but needs must .

Flower777 · 26/08/2019 13:36

We bought a fake wasps nest. Apparently if they see another nest they won’t go near it.

We have only tried it once so far but it did seem to work! You just hang it near you. No cruelty involved!

RunawayLove · 26/08/2019 13:38

I can't get upset about wasps dying slowly. Bees? Sure. But wasps are cunts.

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 13:38

So now we have a dead one and a live one going a bit nuts in there.

This was part of my 'essentials' haul from the local garden centre yesterday. I got an inflatable footstool for the garden, and this wasp pub. My friend bought one of those fly zappers that looks like a tennis racquet. Grin

Can't you put some jam out to attract them? It won't kill them and if you put it away from where you want to be it may help?

99problemsandjust1appt · 26/08/2019 13:42

Imagine how bad it’ll be on a Friday and Saturday night. Wasps have such bad tempers there will definitely be fights at the pub 🤣

eddiemairswife · 26/08/2019 13:44

When we did this (with beer) it encouraged them to come from miles around.

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 13:46

I have put some of the jam water in a bowl a bit further up the garden, just also need Sparklingcat not to stick her nose in it.

We have trees at the bottom of our garden , dh went out a few weeks ago to cut back a branch when suddenly he rushed back up the garden at 100 miles an hour !
He'd been stung by a good few wasps. On investigation we had a very big wasps nest hidden in the lower branches of a hedge . I looked up how to get rid , but sadly, in all cases it meant becoming a wasp killer . So we decided to just leave them bee ( get it ! haha )
Fast forward to today and the wasps have gone and dh has got his overhanging branch.

PullingMySocksUp · 26/08/2019 13:48

Same here wife
I think they’re better if you put them out while you’re eating for a temporary distraction for them.

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 26/08/2019 13:50

As much as I'd hate it too either way they are going to have a nasty death. There are no jobs for them to do now and the queen has kicked them out of the nests they have no food. That's why they are always beggars at this time of the year- they're hungry. So either they die in your wasp pub or they starve to death. Stick some beer in there and at least they'll go happy.

nowifi · 26/08/2019 13:52

Is it a BEEfeater ? Grin

TDogsInHats · 26/08/2019 13:52

I thought you meant the US version of wasp (acronym) Shock

TDogsInHats · 26/08/2019 13:53

Perhaps put a covering of sticky paper over the jar/pub so you don't witness their deaths?
