I am having second thoughts about my wasp pub

I bought a wasp pub as we have loads of wasps at the moment and I wanted to be able to eat outside without getting plagued.

I have set it up and we have our first victim trapped. But now I am feeling sorry for it because it can't get out! seems a bit cruel. Sad

DS and DH think it's great but eating your lunch watching insects die isn't going to be fun is it?

If the Wasp Pub contains actually beer then they'll die happy (or is that slugs? )

Proper wasp nests actually make my scalp prickle , like that Trypophobia condition, they are too regular and neat .

If a wasp comes into my house I will give it one chance to leave (door/window) then I use the glass and card to expell it .(then I kill it)

Bees I will happily escort out as many times as they need

ForgetMeNot0 · 26/08/2019 15:44

What's a wasp pub?!

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 15:45

The other nature that bother me is moths. I hate them. What do they do of note? Apart from flap around the lights?

I’ll happily escort a bee to a nice looking flower or just away from my food.
But awake can go fuck themselves Hmm

This is similar to what I paid £1.99 for @ForgetMeNot0

ThePolishWombat

Vital role
Wasps are also just important in the environment. Social wasps are predators and as such they play a vital ecological role, controlling the numbers of potential pests like greenfly and many caterpillars.

Indeed, it has been estimated that the social wasps of the UK might account for 14 million kilograms of insect prey across the summer. A world without wasps would be a world with a very much larger number of insect pests on our crops and gardens.

As well as being voracious and ecologically important predators, wasps are increasingly recognised as valuable pollinators, transferring pollen as they visit flowers to drink nectar. It is actually their thirst for sweet liquids that helps to explain why they become so bothersome at this time of year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/08/2019 15:53

Why do wasps sting me when I sit still and be all zen? I don't flap at them despite being fairly allergic. They seem to hate me.

avocadoincident · 26/08/2019 15:57

Wasps need better PR people. They are as important as bees when pollinating. Although I know they are fuckers. (My baby has been stung six times this summer).

avocadoincident · 26/08/2019 15:59

@Branleuse I love your post

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 16:01

The problem is that wasps seem to go looking for trouble whereas bees don't tend to, bees seem better at getting on with the task in hand without getting distracted.

@RavenLG was it Greenman? That festival was teaming with them. They may as well have been headlining?!

ThreadKillerSleepsInACoil · 26/08/2019 16:11

I've only become allergic to wasp stings in the last couple of years. I may never have a reaction again, or it might be much more serious next time.

It's them or me - and I have the fly swatter-

Poochandmutt · 26/08/2019 16:19

Last year I was so fed up with flys I bought fly paper ..then it caught the first one and I couldn’t bear it ,tried to rescue it ,ofcourse it was stuck fast and i couldn’t free it ...I took them down after that ...

RavenLG · 26/08/2019 16:27

@avocadoincident it was indeed! They were bloody everywhere! We’ve usually taken tankards each year with lids to keep them out of the cider but forgot this year so it was horrendous x

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/08/2019 16:48

Bees get into the house and stay at the window , buzzing apologetically waiting for me to get a glass and card .

Wasps ,otoh , glide off into the house like bloody sharks looking for aggro .

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 26/08/2019 17:02

I was sitting outside a café a couple of weeks ago and at one point I counted 8 wasps on our table alone. They were landing on my bacon roll as I lifted it to my mouth so I nearly bit one. We tried giving them the spare jam but 2 of them went for the jam and the rest continued to circulate around our breakfast. If I'd had a wasp pub or a swatter I would have used it! DS had an ice cream and one of them flew into his open mouth - he stood there screaming around it and luckily it flew out again without stinging him, but he was utterly panicked and distraught. We had to go and sit in the car with the windows rolled up to finish the ice cream in peace.

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 17:19

Sad TooExtra, that's way too many wasps to deal with. They could have put them on the menu at that rate. Bacon and Wasp roll. Sad

Hate the feckers. We fired up the BBQ yesterday and were sat down for 10 minutes and were surrounded by the buggers. Mutual agreement to decamp into the house. Gutted as we haven't had many alfresco dining opportunities this year! (Central Scotland)

AcarinaTeaBag · 26/08/2019 19:51

You don't need to spend a fortune on a fake nest just save any brown paper bags you get, blow them up and tie string around the top and hang them near doors or wherever you eat. This method has worked for us for years.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 26/08/2019 20:00

We always have at least one wasps nests in/around the house

I always get the whole nest killed by the council

Still plenty of wasps around in the garden come this time of year.

Wasp pub sounds fine, but would not bother myself, they'll all be dead soon anyway

LaserShark · 26/08/2019 20:08

Has...has WorraLiberty’s account been hacked by a wasp??

ThreadKillerSleepsInACoil · 30/08/2019 17:32

I don't know about wasps being deterred by another 'nest'. We have had 3, yes 3, nests killed in our workplace (very, very small but country area) and there's still at least another 2. Doesn't seem to bother the stingy gits in the least.

Sparklingbrook · 30/08/2019 17:53

Blimey, 5 nests. They must really like your place. Sad

I have emptied the wasp pub and washed it out. I put it on the patio table pondering what to do with it and the wasps are still going in it. Confused

One very happy wasp scored a jam roly poly from our picnic a couple of weeks back
It got into the wrapper and we bolted GrinI hate them but I like to think it had a good food party.

And then died. But happy

nopixelsfound · 30/08/2019 18:07

DW is very allergic to wasp stings, so we have the fake nests and it seems to work to keep them away. I would feel bad about killing them indiscriminately but I have killed ones that have come in the house and won't leave... In a choice between the wasp and DW, I choose her!
