I am having second thoughts about my wasp pub

I bought a wasp pub as we have loads of wasps at the moment and I wanted to be able to eat outside without getting plagued.

I have set it up and we have our first victim trapped. But now I am feeling sorry for it because it can't get out! seems a bit cruel. Sad

DS and DH think it's great but eating your lunch watching insects die isn't going to be fun is it?

I think you need to educate yourself better on why we need wasps, then eat your dinner indoors.

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 14:47

I spent months one year nursing a visiting ill fox back to health with the help of the local Wildlife Trust and the medicine they gave me. He still visits every evening for supper. But there's people that like to tut about that so you can't win really. A lot of people said I should have let him die.

Thanks Worra, but I am ok. I have eaten my lunch on the patio. Grin

thought you meant the US version of wasp (acronym)

I was thinking white Anglo Saxon Protestant or we are sexual perverts before I read the thread

It is cruel and in light of the recent focus on climate change surely we all need to think s bit more locally about our local eco system. I bet you have plastic grass as well Smile

RavenLG · 26/08/2019 14:48

I was only trying to capture the ones that are going to potentially spoil my meal, not send a wasp Whatsapp out to tell them all to visit
That’s the problem though, you think it’s “only a couple” then so do your friends who you have told, and their friends and so on.

I hate the cunts too, they come into our house all the time. Last week we were at a festival and they were everywhere, but as PP says. You stay still, and cover drinks and leave them alone they’re not a danger (unless you have an allergy to stings, which flapping your arms around and agitating them is the worst thing to anger them anyway).

Bit naff, but these nets work great. They try to get in but then realise they can’t so buggar off.

A fake nest is nicer.

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 14:50

Nope my grass is grass (well moss and grass at the moment), I don't understand plastic grass at all.

Wasps are usually pretty chill if you go zen and pretend not to notice them or be bothered. It's only when you start shooing them and getting flustered that they then get agitated.

Of course, I only discovered this when I had to put my own panic aside and pretend to be unfazed to stop my Guides panicking so much. The girls soon noticed that if they went zen too the wasps left them alone, whereas if they started screaming and flapping and getting up the wasps got worked up too.

Allergies are a different matter of course.

I just feed them and it keeps them happy and they don't bother us. I leave them a saucer of jam or they eat any over ripe apples from our fruit trees. They never come near the house and everyone is happy.

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 14:55

Right. Newsflash! THE WASP PUB HAS BEEN TAKEN DOWN. So everyone can stop stressing about that one poor wasp...

I have put a blob of jam on a saucer out so we will see how that goes. The fake nests sound like an idea for next year.

In other news the inflatable foot stool is excellent. Grin

The fake nests look excellent.

I don't think I've even seen any wasps this year.

SierraNevada · 26/08/2019 14:59

The only time I’ve been stung in 58 years was when I followed my DBs advice to keep totally still when one landed on my finger. I stayed still and the little bugger stung my finger. So ever since I’ve batted them off or run for it. Going Zen didn’t work for me.

So this is what I need. Quite pricey.

Do the fake nests actually work?!
Just as a visual deterrent to the buggers?

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/08/2019 15:04

They don’t bother me, they look at me then fly off.

Dh flaps at the so he gets bothered.

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 15:06

pestlockdown.com/do-fake-wasps-nests-actually-work/

This says they aren't very good and that wasps can build their nests underground. Confused

I wouldn't buy something that traps and kills wasps. They are little creatures who like to annoy people who sit in the garden, a bit like nasty crap neighbours ha ha.. I have been stung many a time by wasps, and its very painful.but would not like to kill them, or watch them die.

Try having a ciggie outside, they don't like the smoke very much.

Milkstick · 26/08/2019 15:12

Wasp whatsapp? Whaspapp! (Just typing it like that made my eyes hurt, sorry everyone.)

Mumoftoo19 · 26/08/2019 15:16

I have no sympathy for the wasps. Evil things they are. Bees are a different story but dont feel sorry for the wasp.

Just yesterday DS (8) was sitting on a bench drinking a smoothie and one literally went in his mouth and stung him. The poor boy was terrified Sad and is now traumatised. He said it scared his heart. Bastard things!

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2019 15:16

Genius, I can slowly kill myself while keeping the wasps at bay. Grin Sounds great.

You have a fatality ? when is the party/wake.
I`m buzzing.

Kungfupanda67 · 26/08/2019 15:18

Isn’t this the time of year when they aren’t pollinating or doing anything useful though? They’re on their way to starving to death anyway, the queen’s kicked them all out which is why they’re hanging around
my fruit cider.

Saying that I trapped one under a glass the other day and had to let it go because I felt bad. But I wouldn’t judge anyone for having a wasp catcher

QuinoaWest · 26/08/2019 15:22

Have always thought Gordon Ramsay is an angry wasp in human form...

IScreamForIceCreams · 26/08/2019 15:22

That will be one buzzing pub!
