Why is drag so popular now?

Genuine question. I have seen lots of posts on a Facebook this morning about attending some drag queen event. Mostly women and several bringing their teens ( both sexes)

It seems really popular but I have no idea why or what people going get out of it? Is it comedic or fashion or something else.

So. Do some people think that drag is empowering and uplifting to women? Do they think it challenges stereotypes?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/08/2019 15:58

How can it empower women - it’s not women doing it!

Eustasiavye · 18/08/2019 16:00

It is the same as blackface.
At least the black and white minstrels could sing.
What is the point of drag if not to take the piss out of women.
If you want to celebrate women then do so.
It’s the same as saying I want to celebrate masculinity then raving about Ian Huntley, Peter Sutcliffe etc etc.

I don’t have friends who like drag.

RosesAndRaindrops · 18/08/2019 16:02

“I don't see every single woman as oppressed minority just because they're a woman.”
Well neither do I.

Maybe you don't then but some do.

RosesAndRaindrops · 18/08/2019 16:02

It is the same as blackface

To you, yes.

Eustasiavye · 18/08/2019 16:04

I remember kenny Everett and his vile piss take of women whom he called ‘Cupid Stunt’ seriously show me the equivalent of a woman in drag taking the absolute piss out of a man. You can’t.

Eustasiavye · 18/08/2019 16:06

So then it’s offensive.
Plenty of black people were for slavery.
Plenty of black people watched the Alf Garnett comedy (the title eludes me) does that make it ok?
Some men enjoy having sex with their children , is that ok then?
Just because you are all ‘cool’ with it does not make it acceptable.

Campervan69 · 18/08/2019 16:10

I really hate drag

Always have disliked men dressing up as women and taking the piss. Then of course they can wash off the make up and go back to their male privilege.

Why it's ok when the black and white Minstrel Show wasn't I can only put down to the fact that the BAWMS offended black men. If it was just about women would probably still be going.

RosesAndRaindrops · 18/08/2019 16:11

To you, yes
So then it’s offensive

You don't speak for everyone, clearly not every woman thinks it's offensive.

Some men enjoy having sex with their children , is that ok then?

Yes, because clearly drag and paedophilia is comparable just because you find drag offensive.
Hmm
Biscuit
Jesus wept.

Ligresa · 18/08/2019 16:13

I think drag is spectacularly thick. It's not clever, entertaining or an 'art form'.

Campervan69 · 18/08/2019 16:17

It's also shit. Often fat hideous men lip sinking to music. Where's the talent in that?

Ligresa · 18/08/2019 16:17

I forgot vacuous and shallow.

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2019 16:19

@RosesandRaindrops- what’s drag for?

Fraggling · 18/08/2019 16:28

Just catching up

This is extremely telling:
'It'd only be comparable if you're of the opinion that all women everywhere are oppressed, put upon little victims and I don't.'

Where have i heard it before, that womens rights are won, feminism is not needed, the only women still talking about it are doing women everywhere a disservice by painting women as weak victims, women who talk about feminist issues have victim mentality etc

Fraggling · 18/08/2019 16:30

'You can be of the opinion of seeing it as being put upon, everyone taking the piss out of me, they all hate me, I'm a victim'

Heh.

Toughen up ladies and grow a pair 😀

Loopytiles · 18/08/2019 16:32

Dislike it, gender stereotyping (at best).

overnightangel · 18/08/2019 16:32

It’s ‘entertainment’ for morons

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/08/2019 16:35

It's interesting that several.posters have said it's not comparable with blackface but can't explain why.

Drag is sexist and offensive to.many people.

Fraggling · 18/08/2019 16:53

They have said it's because racism is definitely bad but misogyny is fine and anyway you can only say women are oppressed victims if every single one is right now also stop being offended by everything it's a celebration of women literally more impressive/ empowering than anything a woman has ever done.

I think that was it.

howwudufeel · 18/08/2019 16:56

Ophelia Whether you, your DH and everyone you’ve ever met doesn’t consider drag to be part of their working-class culture, the fact is that drag did have a massive following in the working men’s clubs in the North of England. As such, it was a big part of a lot of people’s culture in those areas.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/08/2019 16:58

I think you've summed it up nicely @Fraggling

sackrifice · 18/08/2019 17:05

As such, it was a big part of a lot of people’s culture in those areas.

As was Bernard Manning. Not quite sure which point you are actually making.

howwudufeel · 18/08/2019 17:06

It’s only bad if it’s definitely misogynistic. I’m not someone that would choose to watch a drag show but equally it doesn’t bother me that many people love it.

EverardDigby · 18/08/2019 17:06

I'm not quite sure how any woman avoids living in a world designed for men, nor manages to escape day to day sexual harassment.

howwudufeel · 18/08/2019 17:07

I’m making the point that it’s a working-class thing.
