Why is drag so popular now?

Genuine question. I have seen lots of posts on a Facebook this morning about attending some drag queen event. Mostly women and several bringing their teens ( both sexes)

It seems really popular but I have no idea why or what people going get out of it? Is it comedic or fashion or something else.

Ha "panti bliss," "Cheryl Hole" - so demonstrative. It is indeed like background noise. And the drag queens on Lorraine Kelly's show who gave her the drag name "Morning Glory" Hmm

Anyway, about the guy who dresses in 19th century style clothes - there was a couple in Leicester in the 90s who did this. I used to love seeing them. You wouldn't expect it on a busy street - always did a double take. Like seeing ghosts - perhaps they were! Shock

“I have honestly never heard a man refer to a woman as a hole. I have heard a lot of other very unpleasant words, but never home.”

So when you were saying there was nothing offensive about a drag queen calling himself Cheryl Hole, what did you think “Hole “ was referring to?

Dangerfloof · 22/08/2019 11:22

Had a look and apparently she’s worth £20m and her ex is worth £90m. Like I said, no sleepless nights over the cost of childcare
Trying to not derail but these numbers aren't helpful. If you consider Cheryl's and Liam's? Assets may well be worth that much, but it's not all liquid. They have big expenses to go with the lifestyle (thinking bodyguards, cooks, chauffeurs, cleaners, insurance will be in the stratosphere, several houses to maintain)
To keep that kind of life going needs work, paid work. She likely cannot turn down most jobs. I joke when big stars launch another tour that it's to pay the tax bill. Am probably not far off the mark.

Having said all that, it would kill me to take the job and smile cheerfully to a drag queen named after me.

I know what hole refers to. I just haven’t heard it used it that way. Maybe it’s a regional thing?

What, you've never heard of 'any hole's a goal'?

Yeah right.

So why do you think 'Cheryl Hole' decided to use 'hole' then, and go for that play on Cheryl Cole's name rather than the million other puns he could have used?

JocastaJones · 22/08/2019 13:34

There's a drag queen I've seen interviewed in local press who claims that his particular show is not derogatory to women and doesn't take the piss out of them. His stage name? Dis Charge. And this is one of the ones who at least realises there may be a problem.

Loopytiles · 22/08/2019 13:40

It stinks that it’s so hard to object to sexism as a “joke”, even for a woman who’s a millionaire.

Fraggling · 22/08/2019 17:46

Dis Charge?

OMFG

What a revolting man.

I've lived all over and have heard phrases like 'Hope I get me some hole tonight' (sorry) wherever I've lived. It's not regional, it's just misogyny.

Dis Charge. Just when you think they can't sink any lower. Just vile.

Propertyofhood · 22/08/2019 19:23

I looked up Dis Charge. He seems very woke and vocal about, amongst other things, racial issues.

It's all very interesting really isn't it.....

Regarding rory/panti bliss.

The video a few pages back, everything he said is oppression, women can say the same thing.
Stood at a crossing and a man says "nice tits love" its oppression. When a woman is with a more womanly friend and you know you man up because of the filthy comments and stares, its oppression. Etc etc
