I say my name is Mum. It's brill watching them call it out

helpmeiamatoad · 14/08/2019 14:18

No. I’m a private person and don’t want people knowing my name. I would never feel safe knowing random coffee shop baristas and other customers knew private information about me. Baffles me honestly that people aren’t more careful with their personal information.

Hoooo · 14/08/2019 14:18

Nah.

Gave them "Thanos" last week...

CurbsideProphet · 14/08/2019 14:19

The comedian Dave Gorman did a bit about this in his Modern Life Is Goodish show. He said his name was Americano, the same as his drink order. Obviously paraphrasing etc but it showed how a lot of people don't want a multi national corporation to pretend to be their friend, they just want their coffee.

AquaPris · 14/08/2019 14:23

Maybe you stole someone else's drink. I have a top 10 name. They always get it right although they spell it wrong - my spelling is the common one

Huge over reaction to someone writing your name on a coffee cup

ThatCurlyGirl · 14/08/2019 14:29

Really surprised by some of the responses on here! Just give a different name or say you don't want to give one. They aren't asking for your bank details! Goodness me I wish I had the energy to get annoyed about the things some people are determined to take offence to.

booboo82 · 14/08/2019 14:29

we ask your name when its busy so noone else takes your drink or you dont take someone else's, happens all the time and it's really annoying! also we dont try to spell your names wrong maybe that's a thing in US but not in the uk

LenoVentura · 14/08/2019 14:30

No. I use an alias for anything like this, including restaurant bookings.

lisbonholiday · 14/08/2019 14:30

@helpmeiamatoad

Bit over the top! They could just glance at your card while you pay and see your name. What if someone comes over to you in public and says "Hi Jane!" (or whatever your secret name is) do you just shriek and run away?

autumneve · 14/08/2019 14:32

Love how a pp uses the name of the person in front Grin

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 14/08/2019 14:37

One of my friends has a very unusual name so just calls herself Sarah whenever she orders food, or a taxi or is in Starbucks.

Something to think about for all those people on the baby names board wanting to call their kids Armadillo.

RoLaren · 14/08/2019 14:41

My brother, a solicitor, got his cup back with 'bald guy' written on it. He's receding and it was all he could do not to sue them!

helpmeiamatoad · 14/08/2019 14:41

@lisbonholiday Doubtful, as I only pay in cash. And all my friends would know not to shout my name in public, likewise I would never shout theirs.

Mythreefavouritethings · 14/08/2019 14:42

Last time DH and I were on the road, I came back with cups with weird country music-style names and decided we were travelling across the border for a gig that night. DH gave me the kind of look one might give someone who has just taken their grandmother hostage and sighed. We then ended up sitting on the M1 playing Popmaster and attempting southern accents. Starbucks has been responsible for many such scenarios, so probably lucky their coffee is grim and we only go when it’s the nearest service station. So yes, all the time.

Stravapalava · 14/08/2019 14:44

I give a random name, but then I show them my discount card which has my real name on it! No one has ever clocked though!

ShirleyPhallus · 14/08/2019 14:46

What would you do if one of you were on fire / about to get pickpocketed / get hit by a bike?

81Byerley · 14/08/2019 14:47

I live in hopes of hearing "I am Spartacus" Followed by dozens of others saying "I am Spartacus" but so far, no luck!

helpmeiamatoad · 14/08/2019 14:48

ShirleyPhallus Oh you’re being ridiculous. Obviously in those situations we would ignore our rule (apart from the pickpocket; if I don’t want to give my name to a starbucks barista I sure as hell don’t want to give it to a proven criminal).

thatone · 14/08/2019 14:49

I don't give my name but, to be fair, last time I was in there they didn't ask for my name, they said 'what do you want to be called?' - subtle....so I gave the name I have always wanted - Sara

BearSoFair · 14/08/2019 14:49

I generally use a shortening of my name, but in Starbucks give the full version. They always mishear the shortened version!
I know a guy called Jimmy, he ordered and ended up with 'Shiml' on his cup Confused

Aragog · 14/08/2019 14:52

I like costa, stand in queue, order, they make coffee, give it to me, I pay then sit down.

Costa ask for names here too.

WarmSausageTea · 14/08/2019 14:54

Another Bob here.

ShirleyPhallus · 14/08/2019 14:55

What do you think is gonna happen if a pickpocket knows your first name?! I’d get it if your friend yells your first name, last name, address, DOB and national insurance number but this is being waaaay over cautious!
