I never go to Starbucks just because I don't like that coffee. But I do go to a Harris and Hoole where they have this nonsense too. They ask, "Can I have a name for the order?" and I reply, politely and with a smile, "No".

They look confused for a second then put the order through and it all works perfectly well just with them calling out "Americano" when it's ready. Or usually, not needing to shout anything because there are only 2 other people there and it's perfectly obvious which order is mine.

Yes

Don't go in often but when I do I give my real name . Its 4 letters long and pretty common . I do long to say something like Desdemona or Anastasia etc but don't . Perhaps one day . Grin

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 14/08/2019 12:07

Yes, now I do, after I said I was Princess Consuela Banana Hammock and one of my senior managers was in the same Starbucks and heard them call it out

Ha I love this . Imagine them trying to get that on the cup .

Enko · 14/08/2019 12:10

No I give surname as easy to spell or DHS name as easy to spell and many think it's short for Nicola so doesn't give raaised5 eyebrows. I never give my own as unusual and hard to spell. Ds age 17 mentioned the other week he just uses a abbreviation of our surname and he has a easy to spell first name.

NameChange84 · 14/08/2019 12:14

I do now but I used to do little “collections” of characters about 10 years back.

Eg Ariel, Aurora, Belle etc

Emily, Charlotte, Jane

Elizabeth, Mary, Lydia etc etc

Very immature. I only got away with the Disney ones in California.

I wonder if I could get away with Offred, Ofwarren, Ofhoward etc...

HappyParent2000 · 14/08/2019 12:15

Always Randy or Rando

bouncingraindrops · 14/08/2019 12:17

I always say 'no name'

It's 50:50 whether the cup comes blank or with 'no name' written on it Grin

Sparklyspoon · 14/08/2019 12:27

Depending on my mood I'm either Sarah or I say my actual name just to see how they spell it

ThePhoenixRises · 14/08/2019 12:30

Anyone else trying to think up a Starbucks name for themselves now?

pottypotamus · 14/08/2019 12:32

No never as no one can ever spell it correctly. Always give the shortened version of DH name as it can be unisex

Ethelswith · 14/08/2019 12:33

I always make up a name. Whatever is on my mind that day.

I once met someone called Capuchine - often wondered how she got on in shops such as these

simplysleepy · 14/08/2019 12:36

I worked at Starbucks for almost 3 years- there’s no big conspiracy that we get people’s names wrong on purpose, it’s jut incredibly hard to hear behind the counter at some point, like when the blender and the frother are on at the same time, or when someone is loading up the oven.

KurriKurri · 14/08/2019 12:48

Yes - I have a very common easily spelt (shortened)name. They still often spell it wrong but as long as I get my chai latte I don't care.

Occasionally I give a foreign version of the same name if I'm feeling a bit exotic.

FabulouslyFab · 14/08/2019 12:56

I give my surname. One time the girl went to write it down, looked et me and said ‘Cool’ !! 😂

insancerre · 14/08/2019 13:03

I’ve never been to Starbucks
This thread has confirmed my instincts were right

PutyourtoponTrevor · 14/08/2019 13:09

Don't know if it's true but the guy who said Mark with a C so they wrote Cark!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/08/2019 13:09

"Don't tell 'em your name, Pike!!" WinkGrin

Greenteandchives · 14/08/2019 13:12

I always make something up. It’s all part of the fun. But then I have been known to invent entire personas on holidays where I will never meet the same people again....

Indicative · 14/08/2019 13:47

Can you guess my real name?

Is this a name fail or an instruction? I was in an airport!

Although I don't think individual baristas do it on purpose, I have been reliably informed by an insider that this was a marketing ploy. All they had to do was make it policy to ask a name - most people comply because its seen as polite to when asked a direct question.

As someone in the industry, I personally think that it is fucking GENIUS! A highly shareable and funny 'error' with no real damage to the brand is a near impossible marketing tool.

Well done I say - it makes people smile and creates moments customers want to share with their friends, life's too short to be angry about these kind of things! It's win win.

brookelopez · 14/08/2019 14:07

I worked in Starbucks years ago and never heard anything about the wrong name brand tactics tbh. Also it's very loud in some stores and behind the counter is much like a phone box bubble, hard to hear people over the espresso machine, steamers, music and customers general chatting, this is the biggest reason names are spelled incorrectly

MargoLovebutter · 14/08/2019 14:11

No, I have one of those weird names that needs repeating about 5 times. I use a selection of different short names for things like this that I'm happy to shout loudly for the entire queue / restaurant to hear!
