Just seen a thread about awful names Sad and thought it would be nice to celebrate difference!

What unusual names have you heard that you've liked?

I have

Diamond - 101 year old lady who was friend of my grandmother

Saturn - cutest little girl ever

Gaia - never heard it before

Are French registrars still that strict? I know that there are still some rules, since President Mitterrand abolished the approved list of names in the 1990s. My (half French, born in France, raised in France) teenage nephews have a friend called Luprune, which appears to be made up in any language. This seems rather contrary to my sister and BiL’s struggle to register their first child with the English spelling of a name commonly used in English and French.

WeshMaGueule · 13/08/2019 09:48

Hmmm. I'd take that screencap with a pinch of salt, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the French equivalent of that Le-a bollocks you see all over the place. I'm slightly sceptical of Luprune too, TBH, I'd want to see a carnet de famille Wink. Not an expert but I think the main cause of refusal is if the name is likely to be detrimental to the kid, and I think Zizanie would probably come under that heading. In any case, we had no trouble registering our two with names never used in France but common in other cultures.

I recently met a Lovelyn, which I'd never heard before. It sounded odd at first but it's really quite pretty.

RedCrab · 13/08/2019 15:12

So many beautiful names on this thread! We went with very unusual names for our three DC - not seen them mentioned yet - and I think they’re something like around the 3k mark on name lists.

But my husband met a 20 year old woman with the same name as our middle child and he was asking her if she was ok with it growing up - she said she loved it, so basically - phew!

Minai · 13/08/2019 15:28

I met a little girl called Jetta a while ago. Love it!

Abuelita, I also have some great names in my family tree. My great, great, great grandfather's name was Ozias, and one family contains three brothers called Wallace, Horace and Elbridge, which I think are rather splendid!

TrickyD · 13/08/2019 16:10

Yes, Loveday in Little White Horse, and, I think, in Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher. It is an old Cornish name.

I have a friend called Darling. And she is.

90 years back, I had great great aunts Happy (x2!) and Comfort.

AbuelitaAyahuasca · 13/08/2019 16:42

SoMuchToBits those names are awesome! Is Ozias biblical?

SoMuchToBits · 13/08/2019 17:01

Yes, I think so. It was a name used a fair bit in the local area at the time, and there were a few Oziases in my family.

FuckAPotNoodle · 13/08/2019 17:14

There was a fire chief in my area called Caesar Ticehurst!
