Just after some opinions...if someone left the caravan in this state would you refund their deposit? No dust pan and brush in unit

@ShirleyPhallus Yes, you are expected to leave a place clean. We have rented holiday homes for decades and leave it as clean as when we arrive. Ok we don't vacuum every room but we make sure the kitchen is spotless, stack the dishwasher and run it , loos are clean and so on. it's just polite to do so.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/07/2019 17:25

YANBU. I’s a bit extreme to withhold the deposit.

HollowTalk · 27/07/2019 17:27

All of those things could have been picked up.

On the other hand, surely the caravan has to be cleaned by the owner or whoever before someone else stays there?

Ive had my caravan left a lot worse. I wouldn't have bothered about that or withheld a deposit.

A deposit should only be withheld if a deep clean is required like stains on carpets, couches, curtains etc not for some crumbs and an apple.

Fuma · 27/07/2019 17:31

Whether you personally spend your leisure time dusting, hoovering, cleaning and washing holiday accommodation that you've paid to stay in is beside the point I think. Someone wants money off the OP for a service that she could reasonably presume to have already paid for. That's not ok.

LoafofSellotape · 27/07/2019 17:32

Surely that's why places are cleaned inbetween lettings?

You're on holiday, you clear up dishes etc every day but you aren't expected to hoover and dust etc every day Confused

Bookworm4 · 27/07/2019 17:32

Most caravans I’ve stayed in have dustpan & brush, mop/bucket. Think they are looking for an excuse not to give deposit back which is odd as usually it just comes off your balance not an extra 🤔

Benjispruce · 27/07/2019 17:35

I wouldn't have left it like that.

Benjispruce · 27/07/2019 17:36

But it seems a bit harsh to not refund a deposit over that.

Thentherewascakes · 27/07/2019 17:39

Well OK but if im paying to stay somewhere I don't expect to have to clean it unless that is explicitly the terms, which would be odd.

to be fair, it usually is. Either it clearly states that cleaning is included, or charged extra, or that you are expected to clean when you leave.

I always pay for cleaning, I can't be bothered and more importantly there's no possible query about the standard of cleanliness.

A place that provides absolutely no brush or dustpan is odd.

UrsulaPandress · 27/07/2019 17:40

I'd have been ashamed to leave it like that.

Although we stay in a friend's caravan and I give it a thorough cleaning before we leave.

KnifeAngel · 27/07/2019 17:43

If there was no dustpan and brush then crumbs are acceptable. You should have picked up the crisps and apple though. It is in a right state.

EggysMom · 27/07/2019 17:45

We rent cottages and caravans and, whilst we don't live like pigs, I don't expect to spend any time cleaning before I leave - the amount I pay should include a thorough clean between our stay and the next person. I will empty bins, just in case of a gap between visitors and the cleaner not coming for a few days. I will tidy and pick up obvious debris every day, the same as I would at home between cleaning sessions. But I'm not hoovering, wiping down cupboard doors, cleaning windows etc. whilst on holiday.

LoafofSellotape · 27/07/2019 17:46

Ashamed to leave it like what, an apple on the floor and a few crumbs after a week's stay in a small place?Confused

FurnitureAndBackgammon · 27/07/2019 17:48

It is in a right state.

Oh give over, it's a few crumbs 🙄

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/07/2019 17:56

Seeing as they never left any tools to clean, they would be vu to keep the deposit. I assume cleaning was therefore be in the rental price. In your place I would tell them you expect your deposit returned in full as no damage was caused. Threaten with small claims if necessary or contact your card company and start a claim against them under section 75. If it was by bank transfer there is a new voluntary code for fraud your bank may subscribe to.

CottonSock · 27/07/2019 17:58

If cleaning was included they are taking the piss. I probably would have left it a bit neater, but no mobility issues for me.

Benjispruce · 27/07/2019 17:58

If they didn't leave any tools to clean I would expect more than a little dirt after a holiday. Was there a hoover?

madeabooboo · 27/07/2019 18:01

Give over people who say it's a 'right state'

Hyacinth Bucket types who clearly haven't done my job going into utterly truly filthy homes day in day out

FurnitureAndBackgammon · 27/07/2019 18:07

I'd be kicking up a fuss, OP they have no right to refuse to refund your deposit 😡
Was it a company or private caravan?

MummyOfTwo92 · 27/07/2019 18:08

They should give you your deposit back.
Really wouldn't take long to clean.

Beautiful3 · 27/07/2019 18:17

I think it's okay. There's no dust pan and brush so what could you really do. Seems a little mean to withhold your deposit for that.

EdWinchester · 27/07/2019 18:32

It's a bit messy but not worth withholding a deposit.

madeabooboo · 27/07/2019 18:39

It's a company

6th year running we've been with them

OP posts:
Atthebottomofthegarden · 27/07/2019 18:42

They’re being CFs not to return your deposit for that and I would be extremely annoyed.
