Unacceptable mess left in caravan

Just after some opinions...if someone left the caravan in this state would you refund their deposit? No dust pan and brush in unit

Are you expected to clean up yourself? I would expect this to be made clear. We had a cottage for a week recently and we weren't asked to clean. So we gave it a once over. But would expect someone to be doing a proper clean in between customers.

Kez200 · 27/07/2019 16:29

No. The van needs cleaning anyway so all those things will be covered by it.

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2019 16:30

I run an air bnb. This wouldn't even register. Assuming those pictures show the worst I'd probably still give five stars for 'did the guest leave it clean and tidy?'

It's an apple not a turd 😂

NuttyOrNice · 27/07/2019 16:34

It’s a bit messy but not really enough to withhold the deposit. I’m guessing they sent you the photos? Suggest they keep £20 as a goodwill gesture.

Fuma · 27/07/2019 16:44

They are taking the piss. When I rent a holiday place I assume that the owner has enough wits about them to have factored in costs incurred by hiring a cleaner or, at the very least, how much their own time is worth if they clean it themselves between lets and to have charged me accordingly. I certainly don't pay to stay somewhere with the expectation that I'll get it ready for the next guest as it is in so many ways not my business. Likewise I do not expect to stay somewhere that isn't professionally cleaned prior to my arrival and that I just have to depend on the previous hirer's hygiene standards being ok. If you'd damaged the fixtures and fittings fair enough, but there's no damage here and the cleaner should sort it out.

ElizaPancakes · 27/07/2019 16:48

Can't believe this would even register for most people. If you let a property or caravan and take a fee for cleaning then you shouldn't expect people to spend hours making it pristine.

Thentherewascakes · 27/07/2019 16:52

All rental places should charge a mandatory cleaning fee - it would make everybody's life so much easier. Deposits should only be kept for damages and people taking the piss, not emptying rubbish bins and so on.

It's dirty, how much do they want to keep exactly?
They should provide cleaning equipment.

huggybear · 27/07/2019 17:00

@RedDogsBeg I think so, I can see it on the app but not the web browser version!

80sMum · 27/07/2019 17:03

Whenever I say in rented accommodation for a holiday I always without fail leave it spotless

Me too! I allow a couple of hours for cleaning after we've packed our cases ready to go home. I even do it when the rental fee specifies that it includes post-rental cleaning! I can't bring myself to leave the place in a mess. However, there are always cleaning materials and equipment provided.

The OP's pics don't look too bad, considering she had no cleaning equipment to use.

RedDogsBeg · 27/07/2019 17:04

Thanks @huggybear, I've started a thread in Site Stuff about it because it happens so often and is annoying to say the least. Seems pointless having the ability to post photographs or pictures if half the users can't actually see them.

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2019 17:05

Yes, I've rented out about 15 or 16 times now and never had a bad experience. Some people empty the indoor bin, some don't. Some strip the beds, most don't. Some leave dirty dishes. But none of this takes any particular time or effort to 'rectify' (and tbh when someone stays I expect the place to look stayed in!). Stained carpets or furniture or damage would be annoying. A visibly dirty toilet would be unpleasant even though it's quickly sorted. But a few crumbs and an abandoned apple are just part of the normal clean.
Tell them to keep th e apple and consider themselves lucky :)

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2019 17:06

"They should provide cleaning equipment."
Well OK but if im paying to stay somewhere I don't expect to have to clean it unless that is explicitly the terms, which would be odd. I don't go out of my way to make a mess and would clear up after myself, eh empty bins as they needed it, mop up spills. But I wouldn't be hoovering just because.

Pinktinker · 27/07/2019 17:09

Meh, that doesn’t look messy at all. It would take literally one minute to clean that ‘mess’ up, they need to get a grip.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/07/2019 17:10

It’s dirty and you certainly couldn’t have tidied it much better but no way should you have deposit withheld for a two minute tidy job! The deposit has to be justifiable. Ie: it’s to cover the costs of repairing/replacing damaged items or the cost of cleaning equipment or products used to clean. What you have left there will cost absolutely nothing to put right. So no, they should not withhold your deposit. If they do, request copies of receipts for all costs incurred.

huggybear · 27/07/2019 17:10

I don't really understand what people are saying about the fact someone will clean it after. Yes of course this true in most cases but are you saying that if you spilt stuff on the floor you'd just leave it because someone will clean it? I don't really understand that mentality.

huggybear · 27/07/2019 17:11

@RedDogsBeg yep would be good to get a resolution!

regmover · 27/07/2019 17:11

I have lost count of the number of times I've stayed in self catering accommodation and I wouldn't dream of cleaning the place when I leave. It will be tidy and obvious crumbs cleared from worktops, but it's down to the owner to get it cleaned ready for the next visitors. When people talk about cleaning a place they have rented for a couple of hours before going home I question their sanity to be honest. Don't they know that there will be proper cleaners going in after they leave? It's what we pay for.
Op - you didn't notice an apple under a table - so what - all they had to do was pick it up. The rest is normal cleaning to be expected after a family has stayed. Yes, they are taking the piss and should return your deposit.

JacquesHammer · 27/07/2019 17:12

Yes of course this true in most cases but are you saying that if you spilt stuff on the floor you'd just leave it because someone will clean it?

No, I think whether the OP cleaned the small amount of mess fully is by the by.

What is shown in the pictures would take nothing more than a normal end of stay clean to rectify and therefore it’s difficult to see how they can justify withholding the deposit.

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2019 17:13

Not at all. Mess I specifically cause will be sorted. Washing up will be done routinely. Anything I spill will be cleared up. If I tracked mud in I would sort it out.
What I wouldn't do is the deep clean of the bathroom, hoover through, strip beds. Surely having that taken care of is part of the appeal of staying away. Why would you want to do it?and would you want to stay somewhere that had been cleaned to the standards of the last guest?

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2019 17:14

If I dropped an apple I would pick it up. Bit not spotting it is really no big deal.

huggybear · 27/07/2019 17:17

I strip beds and hoover if it looks messy. Why? Because I think it's polite. I would still expect it to be professionally cleaned afterwards. I don't think that everyone should do as I do but I do think no one should leave crisps on the floor but like I said originally I don't think the deposit should be lost.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 27/07/2019 17:17

@huggybear yes I can see the crumbs. I imagine that when the cleaner came to clean the caravan, they would hoover them up.

Same as I would do AT HOME and same as OP may well have done if they had provided a hoover or dustpan and brush.

huggybear · 27/07/2019 17:18

It's not the apple that's the problem!

NotMaryWhitehouse · 27/07/2019 17:20

@Dontfuckingsaycheese

It's an apple. Not a turd. 🤣👍🏻
