Lines that break your heart

nordstrom · 26/07/2019 22:43

I'm just watching a Queen documentary on tv.

Many songs move me, but no single lyric breaks my heart like "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all" Sad. The utter, desolate sadness of that simple statement, socks me every time I hear it.

“When are you gonna come down?
When are you going to land?”

The opening lines of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John. Played at my dads funeral. Cannot listen to that song now, ever.

ohfourfoxache · 27/07/2019 12:35

I'll try to be strong
Believe me I'm trying to move on
It's complicated but understand me.
'Cause I
Need time
My heart is numb, has no feeling
So while I'm still healing
Just try and have a little patience.
Have a little patience.

Take That, Patience

I heard it for the first time 3 days after my Grandad died. The whole song just summed up how I felt, and I still can’t listen to it without ugly crying (even when seeing them in concert Blush )

Dizzylin · 27/07/2019 13:07

DH suffers from clinical depression, I'd love to be able to climb into his head and re-wire whatever it is that is causing it. I miss my carefree husband and its hard to accept that, that person has gone. I love him dearly. Songbird always makes me cry and pretty much sums up how I feel.

For you, there'll be no more crying
For you, the sun will be shining
And I feel that when I'm with you
It's alright, I know it's right

To you, I'll give the world
To you, I'll never be cold
Cause I feel that when I'm with you
It's alright, I know it's right

And the songbirds are singing
Like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before

wanderings · 27/07/2019 13:12

That moment in the film of Goblet of Fire, when Harry's mum speaks to him. "Sweetheart, you're ready, let go..."

I only discovered this song recently: the The Rose, especially the last two verses.

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes a chance.
It's the one who won't be taken
who cannot seem to give
It's the soul afraid of dying
that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
far beneath the winter snows
the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring becomes the rose.

It's such a simple tune, but the song is so powerful.

OurChristmasMiracle · 27/07/2019 13:21

“So when I tell the story Of the death of my mum, I read the words like it’s a love letter, and as the pain gets deeper the story only gets better”

Bobbindobbin · 27/07/2019 13:27

He's like the son I might have known
If God had granted me a son.
The summers die
One by one
How soon they fly
On and on
And I am old
And will be gone.

HennyPennyHorror · 27/07/2019 13:28

Bobbin that line comes to me all the time "He's like the son I might have known..."

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 27/07/2019 13:28

I am not making a mockery of the thread I swear but Half Man Half Biscuit’s “For What is Chatteris” really gets me as I bought the album when I was really missing someone.

The lyrics in question:

^Like a game-bird reserve short on pheasants
Weavers’ cottages devoid of tenants
A market town that lacks quintessence
That’s Chatteris without your presence^

Actually gets me every time.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 27/07/2019 13:50

"If heaven calls, I'm coming too" (the drugs don't work)

Bette Middler's the Rose as well ("When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long, and you think that love is only for the lucky, and the strong"

And all of "you have been loved" by George Michael,

as well as the bit in Praying for time: "cause he can't come back, as he has no children to come back for"

TooGood2BeFalse · 27/07/2019 14:02

John Legend All of Me. I know it is meant to be a love song, but I well up when I hear it because I think of my 7 year old and his journey with ASD. He has worked so hard to become the chatty, loving kid he has become Grin

[Verse 1]
What would I do without your smart mouth?
Drawin' me in and you kickin' me out
You've got my head spinnin', no kiddin'
I can't pin you down
What's goin' on in that beautiful mind?
I'm on your magical mystery ride
And I'm so dizzy, don't know what hit me
But I'll be alright

[Verse 2]
How many times do I have to tell you?
Even when you're crying, you're beautiful too
The world is beating you down, I'm around
Through every mood
You're my downfall, you're my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I can't stop singing, it's ringing
In my head for you

ilovecardigans · 27/07/2019 14:05

Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you’re there. It doesn’t matter what you do, he said, so as long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that’s like you after you take your hands away.

From Farenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury

My mum died almost exactly a year ago today and this was one of the readings I chose for her funeral.

wigglybeezer · 27/07/2019 14:17

The most affecting thing I have ever read was the brief obituary for a small baby in our local paper. It contained the following line:

" Night, night wee lambie"
I still choke up reading it but had wee children myself at the time and ended up sobbing...

wildthingsinthenight · 27/07/2019 14:18

The whole of You Could Be Happy by Snow Patrol makes me sob

darumafan · 27/07/2019 14:38

Always makes me think of my son and the struggles that overwhelmed in the end.

Memories consume
Like opening the wound
I'm picking me apart again
You all assume
I'm safe here in my room
Unless I try to start again
I don't want to be the one
The battles always choose
'Cause inside I realize
That I'm the one confused
I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
I don't know why I instigate
And say what I don't mean
I don't know how I got this way
I know it's not alright
So, I'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
Tonight
Clutching my cure
I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
I hurt much more
Than anytime before
I had no options left again
I don't want to be the one
The battles always choose
'Cause inside I realize
That I'm the one confused
I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
I don't know why I instigate
And say what I don't mean
I don't know how I got this way
I'll never be alright
So, I'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
Tonight
I'll paint it on the walls
'Cause I'm the one at fault
I'll never fight again
And this is how it ends
I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
But now I have some clarity
To show you what I mean
I don't know how I got this way
I'll never be alright
So, I'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
Tonight

ThatCurlyGirl · 27/07/2019 15:47

Piece by piece I fell far from the tree
I will never leave her like you left me
And she will never have to wonder her worth
Because unlike you I'm gonna put her first

Kelly Clarkson often has lyrics that get under my skin and gutpunch me

ThatCurlyGirl · 27/07/2019 15:50

Oh and also ALL of Landslide by Fleetwood Mac, especially

But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
I'm getting older too

And winner takes it all by ABBA

Does it feel the same
When she calls your name

I'll stop now be also Dixie Chicks

Forgive sounds good
Forget I'm not sure you
They say time heals everything
But I'm still waiting

Just off to have a good cry now...!

ThatCurlyGirl · 27/07/2019 15:51

Dixie chicks typo - meant to say:

Forgive sounds good
Forget I'm not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I'm still waiting

Sn0tnose · 27/07/2019 15:52

‘As long as I gaze on Waterloo Sunset, I am in paradise’ - Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks. My aunt’s favourite song, she was born and lived in one of the streets behind Waterloo Station and this was played at her funeral. It breaks my heart every time I hear it.

Thefemalekeithrichards · 27/07/2019 15:54

‘See you at the horses’ that the little boy says at the end of the Cold Case episode based on a true story absolutely heartbreaking episode and story. (‘ boy in the box’ S1/E14) 😢

Bigearringsbigsmile · 27/07/2019 15:56

I can't make you love me if you don't
I cant make your heart feel something that it wont...

clevername · 27/07/2019 16:03

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you
Fairytale of New York, the Pogues

Singletomingle · 27/07/2019 16:04

All of Justin Biebers Love Yourself makes me cry everytime particularly the lines 'everytime you told me my opinion was wrong' and 'all the times you made me feel small'

DuesToTheDirt · 27/07/2019 16:06

@darumafan I can't imagine the pain x

lisamac28 · 27/07/2019 16:13

But piece by piece, he collected me up
Off the ground, where you abandoned things
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
Six years old and you know
He never walks away
He never asks for money
He takes care of me
He loves me
Piece by piece, he restores my faith
That a man can be kind and the father could, stay

Kelly Clarkson Piece by piece. Reminds me of my DD and her step-father after her own father messed her around for a few years and eventually abandoned her.

Clawdy · 27/07/2019 16:20

wigglybeezer that is heartbreaking.
