Lines that break your heart

I'm just watching a Queen documentary on tv.

Many songs move me, but no single lyric breaks my heart like "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all" Sad. The utter, desolate sadness of that simple statement, socks me every time I hear it.

@yourestandingonmyneck
Totally agree with Baby Mine. It is the only song which makes me actually feel the physical ache in my heart. It's strange because I'm not really a big fan on the film Dumbo, but that song is everything!

hereforasillygoosetime · 27/07/2019 09:32

Not from a film or song but whenever I think about this I cry...my 4 year old daughter asking what happens when we die 😭

"So when you die mummy you will go to heaven?"
"Yes I'll wait for you there"
"But I want to go with you"

N0tbloodylikely · 27/07/2019 09:44

And then she runs to the bas*d
And he tells her there will be a new chapter
But she feels no different after
Then he asks her
Where my money at

WouldYouLikeAnOmlette · 27/07/2019 09:45

I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself
Cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did,
You fell so hard
I’ve learned the hard way
To never let it get that far
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don’t get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

Kelly Clarkson writing about her parents divorce. After my parents own horrific divorce leaving me a total mess as a child I get so angry still listening to it and I'm in my 30s. I hope people now are so much more aware of the emotional damage that can happen to children.

Factories, trains and houses
Playground of my youth
The place that left me mute
till' I threw back my shoulders.

ParkheadParadise · 27/07/2019 09:49

To where you are
Fly me up to where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for awhile to know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are.
This was sung by a choir at my dd's funeral. I can't listen to it without tears.

Homecountieswhingebag · 27/07/2019 09:56

The bit of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows after the battle where Harry is looking around at everyone wounded/grieving/celebrating and finds he can’t leave them, even though he’s beyond exhausted. Most beautiful image of Christ I’ve ever read.

Babdoc · 27/07/2019 09:58

Ever since my adored DH died, in his 30’s, I haven’t been able to listen to the Bread song “Everything I own” without crying.
“No-one else could ever know
The part of me that can’t let go
And I would give everything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to touch you
Once again.”

Homecountieswhingebag · 27/07/2019 09:58

There are songs that were played at my parents’ funerals that have special significance, too. Bing Crosby’s Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day, and Frank Sinatra’s One for my Baby.
Not especially sad songs, but speak volumes to me.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/07/2019 09:59

Another from It's a Wonderful Life - though I also agree the entire film's a multi-hanky job:

"To my brother George Bsiley, the richest man in town"

Howl!!! Blush

nordstrom · 27/07/2019 10:11

Thanks to all those for whom the words are associated with such loss and pain x

You won't be mine - Matchbox 20. The whole song but especially

"Over the lies, you'll be strong
You'll be rich in love and you will carry on
But no -Oh no
No you won't be mine"

Decormad38 · 27/07/2019 10:21

I pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon

True poetry

There's no mistake
I smell that smell
It's that time of year again
I can taste the air
Clocks go back railway track
Something blocks the line again
And the train runs late for the first time
A pebble beach, we're underneath a pier, just been painted red
Where I hear the news for the first time
And all the friends lay down the flowers
Sit on the banks and drink for hours
Talk of the way they saw him last
Local boy in the photograph
He'll always be twenty three
Yet the train runs on and on
Past the place they found his clothing
There's no mistake
I smell that smell
It's that time of year again
I can taste the air
The clocks go back railway track
Something blocks the line again
And the train runs late for the first time
And all the friends lay down the flowers
Sit on the banks and drink for hours
Talk of the way they saw him last
Local boy in the photograph
Today, is gone away

Makes me think of a very good friend who'll always be 17

When my little cousin passed away the theme to In The Night Garden was played at the service. It's been over 10 years and I still cry about the most beautiful and sweetest little boy ever. I think the words just seemed to fit him somehow.

when night is black and the stars are bright
and the sea is dark and deep
but someone i know is safe and snug
and there drifting off to sleep
round and round a little boat
no bigger than your hand
out on the ocean
far away from land
take the little sail down
light the little light
this is the way to the garden in the night

Mybobowler · 27/07/2019 10:44

Not a song, but a line from a poem by Liz Berry, about giving birth: "and love, oh love/ I would have gladly left my body/ on that lit ledge for birds to pick clean/ for my heart was in yours now/ and your small body would be the one to carry us."

To be honest, her whole collection about motherhood makes me cry but that line hits me every time.

HennyPennyHorror · 27/07/2019 11:02

Cranjis how beautiful. That tune is haunting and that's a lovely goodbye for a little child.

Makeusacupoftea · 27/07/2019 11:04

Me and my husband had ‘our song’ - my boys would groan when it came on the car radio and giggle as me and my husband went all - in their words - gooey.
The words we went most gooey to were..

if you leave
At least in my
Lifetime
I had one dream come true
I was blessed to be loved
By someone as wonderful as you
Please, don’t go.
(KC and the Sunshine Band)

He died too young and unexpectedly - played at his funeral.

Littlepond · 27/07/2019 11:05

It’s not as profound as most here but the song Some People Say by Terrorvision kinda gets me. Esp this bit:
“Some people say I’m like my brother cos I’m honest and truthful
Some people say they know my brother’s just another liar”

Like you can never please everyone and no one will ever really know who you are in your entirety.

But then
“Some people say, who gives a damn what they say” I’m like yeh! Who cares what Some People say. It’s not All People. Just... Some.

We had that song for BIL's funeral, some of the lyrics are carved on his headstone it just summed up his outlook on life.

suggestusername · 27/07/2019 11:16

All the lyrics to 'wake me up' by Tim Berglin (Aviici) knowing that he went on to commit suicide at such a young age, especially the line 'I didn't know I was lost'

AliasGrape · 27/07/2019 11:26

^Why she had to go, I don't know
She wouldn't say^

From Yesterday - The Beatles, my mum’s favourite song and we played it at her funeral. Breaks me now, even typing it.

OldAndWornOut · 27/07/2019 11:52

'Hello darkness my old friend..."
