Lines that break your heart

I'm just watching a Queen documentary on tv.

Many songs move me, but no single lyric breaks my heart like "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all" Sad. The utter, desolate sadness of that simple statement, socks me every time I hear it.

Three things make me bawl instantly.

  1. Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock delivering his best man speech

  2. (yes, I know it's Rolf Harris) "Did you think I would leave you dyyyyyyyyyying" - Two Little Boys

  3. Dumbledore "Lily? After all this time?"
    Snape "Always"

Had this one in my brain this morning ....

'But my son and my daughter climbed out of the water
Crying, Papa, you promised to play.'

from Leonard Cohen's 'Night Comes On'.

I'm a mess every time I listen to it, but those two lines are just wonderful and heart wrenching in the context of the song.

Off to have a blub now!

Oh God, yes to Green by Joni Mitchell. All of it! “Call her Green, for the children who made her”.

And Do You Realise? By The Flaming Lips. Also Waitin’ for a Superman by them, especially the lines

Tell everybody waiting for Superman,
That they try to just hold on the best they can,
‘Cause he hasn’t dropped them, forgot them, or anything,
It’s just too heavy for Superman to lift.

It was written partly in response to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, where 168 died including 19 children.

Dance with my Father - it kept getting played on the radio in the weeks after I lost my dad. Sad

A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

~ Elvis

Eatsshoootsandleaves · 27/07/2019 08:48

And time makes it harder
I wish I could remember
But I keep your memory, you visit me in my sleep.
My darling
Who knew.

"Promise to give me a kiss on my brow when I am dead.--I shall feel it."

She dropped her head again on Marius' knees, and her eyelids closed. He thought the poor soul had departed. Eponine remained motionless. All at once, at the very moment when Marius fancied her asleep forever, she slowly opened her eyes in which appeared the sombre profundity of death, and said to him in a tone whose sweetness seemed already to proceed from another world:--

"And by the way, Monsieur Marius, I believe that I was a little bit in love with you."

She tried to smile once more and expired.

~ Les Miserables

“When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I’ve done
Help me leave behind some reason to be missed
And don’t resent me
And when you’re feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest.”
Linkin Park, Leave out all the rest, always gave me a lump in my throat, it came on in the car a few months after Chester Bennington died and I had to pull over because of the tears😢

"And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken"

From Alone Again, Naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan

Sundial.in the shade - Listen to Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott sing it, it is such a sad song, I've never, thankfully, been in the position of domestic violence but the grinding loneliness in the sing is so heartbreaking:

As she sat down, put up her feet
And she turned the telly on
She clearly wanted some revenge
For how badly day had gone

And nothing could be better
No end of day complete
Than watching fellow woman
Getting beat

So she smiled a knowing smile
As gradually, the plot
Took the damsel down
For everything she'd got

And nothing made her heart beat like
Another falling flat
That she was not the only one
Who married into that

What I want from life
Is not a roller coaster dip
What I want from love
Is not a ramp up to a skip

All I want is compliment occasionally made
For a life of pure simplicity, unlike these soaps I trade
Till then, I am just that sundial
In the shade

See, mama went to prison
And left her feeling blue
Now, twenty good years later
She's in that prison too

A prison where the governor's
In the armchair of despair
A prison where the only thought
Is a wish she wasn't there

So she smiled a knowing smile
As gradually, he told
Took away her dignity
And offered her the road

So, with coat over pajamas
She headed into the night
Television never made no friends
But solitude just might

In the shade
Sundial in the shade
Ooh-Oh, Ooh-Oh, Ooh-Oh-ooh...

Groom has just, too, made up
With the father of the bride
And the punch, I'm sure that's just too hard
For the bridesmaids to decide

Like the mints that fenced the lager breath
There's so much he could hide
It's a plastic bag or jellyfish
That's floating by your side

Pineapplefish · 27/07/2019 08:51

The lyrics to Rockabye by Clean Bandit.

PhillipeFellope · 27/07/2019 09:01

"That's my son! That's my boy!"

Amos Diggory running through the stands and then to the side of Cedric Diggory who is dead. Harry Potter and the goblet of fire.

Breaks my heart because he went from such joy (thinking Cedric had won the tournament) to realising his son was gone forever.

WistfulBarnacles · 27/07/2019 09:01

Any of 'Further' by VNV Nation but particularly

Each day shall end as it begins
And though you're far away from me
I know in darkness I will find you giving up inside like me

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 27/07/2019 09:03

A PP mentioned the Beatles “In My Life”; the bit that always gets me (its one of my favourite songs) is:

I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
Though I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life, I love you more

Chocolou · 27/07/2019 09:03

Mine is the lyrics from Gabrielle rise song

"Look at my life look at my heart I ave seen them fall apart and now I'm ready to rise again". I was in the process of leaving my exh.

Slippershoes · 27/07/2019 09:12

Jimmy Eat World

And if you were with me tonight
I'd sing to you just one more time
A song for a heart so big
God couldn't let it live

All of sunshine on Leith too.

Jings, i'm standing here in the kitchen insisting to my daughter that the cake isn't baked yet so she doesn't see quite what a snottery mess i've got myself into with this thread.

WineIsMyCarb · 27/07/2019 09:17

The run on the bank in It's a Wonderful Life. Everyone asking for tens or hundreds of dollars (George is putting his honeymoon money up)

Local woman: "I'll have £17.50"

😭😭😭

The whole bloody film though!'

BigmouseLittlehouse · 27/07/2019 09:18

All of ‘if you could read my mind’ sung by Jonny Cash - but in particular the lines:

If I could read your mind, love,
What a tale your thoughts could tell.
Just like a paperback novel,
The kind the drugstores sell.
When you reached the part where the heartaches come,
The hero would be me.
But heroes often fail,
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take!

I'd walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script.
Enter number two:
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me.
But for now, love, let's be real;
I never thought I could act this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it.
I don't know where we went wrong,
But the feeling's gone
And I just can't get it back.

WhatTheAbsoluteFuck · 27/07/2019 09:19

The Dark Tower - last line of the book

“The man in black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed”

Fizzyboo · 27/07/2019 09:22

I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

Nick Cave

RebeccaWrongDaily · 27/07/2019 09:23

'and i need you more than want you, and i want you for all time' Wichita Lineman
and also
'when we were strangers, i watched you from afar, when we were lovers, i loved you with all my heart' Neil Young, Harvest Moon

and all of 'do you realise' the flaming lips

RebeccaWrongDaily · 27/07/2019 09:25

BTW 'if you could read my mind' is Gordon Lightfoot no? I bought one of his albums after watching Trigger Happy TV and loving 'IYCRMM' :D

hereforasillygoosetime · 27/07/2019 09:26

The English Patient, when Ralph Feinnes is carrying Kathryn out of the cave and she is dying:

Almásy:
You're wearing the thimble.
Katharine Clifton:
Of course, you idiot. I always wear it; I've always worn it; I've always loved you.

And then he bursts into tears!! The passion in that film always gets me!!

Moonsofjupiter · 27/07/2019 09:27

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear
Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

Always makes me think of my autistic non verbal ds and who will look after him when I’m no longer here

AllGoodDogs · 27/07/2019 09:27

Tracey Chapman fast car, the last verse "I got no plans I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving" after leaving her alcoholic father for a better life but the man she chose is a useless shit so she stays for the kids unlike her mother did, and tells him to leave.
