Lines that break your heart

nordstrom · 26/07/2019 22:43

I'm just watching a Queen documentary on tv.

Many songs move me, but no single lyric breaks my heart like "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all" Sad. The utter, desolate sadness of that simple statement, socks me every time I hear it.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

From Caged bird, by Maya Angelou. It reminds me of my mum, who never got to fulfil her potential or truly enjoy life.

All of George Michael’s ‘You have been loved’, so beautifully depicts a grieving mother’s pain, gets me every time.
Dolly Parton‘s ‘I will always love you’ was my darling sister’s favourite song & we played it at her funeral when she died at 35yrs old.
26 yrs later I still have to turn the radio off if it's played, breaks my heart.

I took two of my DDs to see Mama Mia, they were 12 & 14, I cried all the way through ‘Slipping through my fingers’, it suddenly hit me that they were indeed slipping through my fingers.
Lord I’ve set myself off again Sad

Beautiful thread!

Flowers to all of you.

Big up to the PP who said 7 hours and 15 days and to the one who quoted The Piano Man (naff as it is, it makes me cry too). I have loads....
(going to do them all as separate posts)

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/07/2019 01:31

At 17. Janis Ian (sp. Sorry!)

To those of us with ravaged faces, lacking in the social graces.
Desperately remained at home, inventing lovers on the phone.

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/07/2019 01:33

Every line in How Soon Is Now.

You say it's going to happen now, but when exactly when do you mean?
You see I've already waited too long, and all my hope is gone"

And from earlier in the same song:

"In a club if you want to go, you could meet somebody who really loves you.
So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home and you cry and you want to die"

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/07/2019 01:36

Every line from Home Thoughts by Clifford T Ward. The "conceit" of the song is that it's a letter to an ex. It's a letter that could ONLY be written to someone you know really, really well. I'll try and link it.

"Oh and By the way, how's your broken heart? Is that mended too? I miss you. I really do"
"Oh and by the way, are you laughing now? Cos I'm not. I miss you"

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/07/2019 01:40

The Infant Kiss (Kate Bush)

And it's REALLY naff, and not PC any more because of him, but Two Little Boys.

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/07/2019 01:44

There's a very, very painful album, which most people don't know.

It's by Dory Previn, who used to be married to Andre Previn. Older MNers will have heard of him. He left her for MIa Farrow (who went on to marry someone [Woody Allen] which did NOT end well).

But when he left her, she wrote this amazing album called Mythical Kings and Iguanas. Which is an album so full of pain, but is so beautiful.

I love:
(sp, sorry) Ya di ya da la scala
The Lady With the Braid
Those Lemon Haired Ladies

All songs about being left.

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/07/2019 01:45

Don't Cry (Guns n Roses)

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/07/2019 01:46

I saw both my grandmothers cry to Sophie Tucker singing My Yiddish-er Momma.

When I was REALLY young, I didn't understand why a grandmother would wipe her eyes and say "I still miss her"

ShellsandSand · 27/07/2019 01:47

Please, remember me, my misery...and how it cost me all I wanted. Song by Iron & Wine

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/07/2019 01:47

It's REALLY naff, but No Charge.

Sorry for monopolising this thread!

Screamanger · 27/07/2019 01:47

Evanescence Tornequet has several lines in it

I tried to kill the pain
But only brought more
I lay dying
And I'm pouring, crimson regret, and betrayal

My wounds cry for the grave
My soul cries, for deliverance
Will I be denied?
Christ! Tourniquet! My suicide

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/07/2019 01:47

I cry at songs a lot.

And also at Bobbie saying "Daddy... oh my Daddy" as a couple of PPs have said.

jmh740 · 27/07/2019 01:49

I don't want to die but I ain't keen on living either.

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you're alive

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 27/07/2019 02:12

Almost any of the lines from the ballard of Lucy Jordan are heartbreaking. Especially when sung in Marianne Faithfull’s beautifully cracked voice:
At the age of 37,
she realised she'd never ride
through Paris in a sports car,
with the warm wind in her hair
And she let the phone keep ringin'
as she sat there softly singin'
Pretty nursery rhymes she'd memorised
in her daddy's easy chair

The evening sun touched gently on
the eyes of Lucy Jordan
On the rooftop where she'd climbed
when all the laughter grew too loud
And she bowed and curtseyed to the man,
who reached and offered her his hand
And led her down to the long white car
that waited past the crowd.

Hidingtonothing · 27/07/2019 02:12

Standin' on the platform
Watching you go
It's like no other pain
I've ever known
To love someone so much
To have no control
You said, "I wanna see the world"
And I said, "Go"

Freya Ridings - Lost Without You

happilybemused · 27/07/2019 06:56

Slipping through my fingers by ABBA. Start and end of every school year. Always sets me off. DS1 about to start his GCSE's so hoping I'll be over it in September (ever hopeful)

proudestofmums · 27/07/2019 07:53

Empty chairs at empty tables

Oh and for, years after my beloved Dad died, the end of Wagner’s The Valkyrie, where BRunnhilde and her father Wotan say/sing an eternal farewell.

danmthatonestakentryanotheer · 27/07/2019 08:28

"My heart was broken...you saw it, you claimed it, you touched it, you saved it"
Sunshine on Leith - The proclaimers...the whole song is just beautiful.

dancingrobot · 27/07/2019 08:30

Definitely Bohemian Rhapsody
And "that's my daughter in the water, everything she knows I taught her" joined with "that's my daughter in the water, I lost every time I fought her"
Probably because I lost my dad young 😔

LittleCandle · 27/07/2019 08:33

When we went to see Mamma Mia at the theatre, every woman there who was of a certain age sobbed through Slipping Through My Fingers. I got a copy of the music, hoping that if I played and sang it often enough I would no longer cry when I heard it. How wrong I was!

BenWillbondsPants · 27/07/2019 08:37

I'd love to say something really cool and hip but for me it's when you find out the Snape really did love Harry Potter.

'Always'.

Nearly finished me off.

darumafan · 27/07/2019 08:38

Cheating slightly but:

For what it's worth, I'm sorry.

The final entry in my beautiful son's journal. He was 22 years old when he ended his life.
