Young grandparents

So I recently bumped into an old school friend who told me she's a granny and her 3 kids are all over 20. Realise I must have started out late as my own kids are 4 and 11.

Was speaking to my friend about it and she told me of someone who became a granny at 35 I was like Shock

So wondering if I am in the minority to not have grandkids, I'm 44 by the way.

My sister was a granny at 35 😱. I've just become one at 49

pumpkinpie01 · 19/07/2019 22:37

@TheMonaOgg , I get that too and find myself telling complete strangers my family history !

babysharkah · 19/07/2019 22:37

Not in my social group, I'm 41 and my kids are 7. I was classed as a 'geriatric primagravida'.

I've noticed in some areas I am in the age group of the grannies, and in others the mums are my age (late 40s with a primary age child).

seeingdots · 19/07/2019 22:43

When you think about it though we have a really big chunk of our lives where we're of child bearing age (say 30 years give or take) so double that and there's a potential range of 60 years in which to become a granny. So not surprising really that there's so much variation.

My SIL became a granny at 36, whereas my mum had to wait impatiently until she was 68.

locketsprocket · 19/07/2019 22:44

My mum was a granny at 37, she was 16 when she had my sister and my sister was 21 when she had her first

TapasForTwo · 19/07/2019 22:45

It isn't common at all to be a young grandmother where I live. Most women seem to have children in their 30s upwards.

cocomelon23 · 19/07/2019 22:49

My nanny was 37 when I was born.

Missillusioned · 19/07/2019 22:49

My sister became a grandmother at 36. She had her first child at 20, who had a child at 16. She is now 50 and has 8 grandchildren. All her children have had children before mid 20s. It has worked out well tbh. She has plenty of energy to enjoy her grandchildren and they all seem very happy.

PinkFlowerFairy · 19/07/2019 22:50

Im 41 and tired with young kids. I do think it must be fun to be my age and have grandkids to play with and give back....

Ronnie27 · 19/07/2019 22:55

My gran had my mum at 23 and I had my first dc at 23 so they both because grandmothers at 46. All degree educated, married professionals with own homes etc so not an income / area thing, we just tend to do it young in my family! Grin

theunrivalledjoysofparenting · 19/07/2019 23:01

Bloody hell. My mum had me aged 30. I had my first dc aged 32. Honestly find it hard to believe that so many people have kids so young. No one I know has.

PinkFlowerFairy · 19/07/2019 23:02

Oh i was 30 and mum was 25. I cant imagine finishing a degree at 21/22 and having time to get established in a job and then have a baby by 23.

twistyturnycurlywhirly · 19/07/2019 23:04

I had a school friend who had her first at 12. She always joked about being a grandmother at 24 if they followed in her footsteps.

Greggers2017 · 19/07/2019 23:10

My mum became a great grandma at 55 😳 she had my eldest brother at 17, my brother had his first at 18 and his daughter had her guest at 20

ChristineBaskets · 19/07/2019 23:12

I was a grandmother at 34, my dm was a great grandmother at 51. Not ideal but it's worked out well for us as a family. Saying that I dearly hope my granddaughter doesn't follow suit and have a child at 17.

CatInADoghouse · 19/07/2019 23:15

My MIL became a GM for the first time at 80!

Argeles · 19/07/2019 23:20

In the area of London I’m originally from, those kind of ages are normal ages to become a grandparent.

In the part of London I recently lived in however, most 35 year olds are childless, and people do not even become parents until their early 40’s.

small2018 · 19/07/2019 23:23

The youngest grandma I know is from my school and was a grandma at 33 before I'd even had children!

She's now 41, has 2 grandkids, is pregnant herself and her 16 yr old son's girlfriend is pregnant!

ChicCroissant · 19/07/2019 23:24

I do know a couple of people who became grannies in their 40's, one had her children early and (as PP said) her children also had theirs early.

The other granny's child was very young with an unplanned pregnancy and fantastically supportive grandparents on all sides.

small2018 · 19/07/2019 23:26

@twistyturnycurlywhirly 12 😱

FenellaMaxwell · 19/07/2019 23:28

I had a neighbour who became a grandmother at 29. She had her daughter at 14, who then had a baby when she was 15.

My mum was 53 when my DS was born, DH’s parents were 78. DH and I are the same age.

barryfromclareisfit · 19/07/2019 23:29

Dd, dgd and me were mocked for our youth in a cafe, once. The staff made comments along the lines that we must have been very young mothers and I was nothing like their grandmas. I had dd at 24, and she had dgd at 29.
My cousin was a grandma at 32.

JustKeepIt · 19/07/2019 23:29

Youngest grandparent I know was 35. Her and her child both had kids at 17.

Nannyamc · 19/07/2019 23:31

My Mam had me at 38 a granddaughter at 39 and did not become a great gran until 80. She had 19 children ( 1 per year) her first were twins at 18 and her first great children were twins too my niece was 41.
She had19 children ..25 grandchildren and 25 great children just as well we did not reproduce the way they did!!!
