I'm tempted to say Devon but there's so many wonderful places out there and so many I haven't visited. I love Yorkshire too. What's your nomination?

OP posts:

Northumberland, but don't come up here to check because we're full Smile

yearinyearout · 16/07/2019 18:33

Did somebody really say Hertfordshire?! St Albans is nice but can't think of anything else wonderful about it.

Yorkshire and Lincolnshire which is very underrated.

Nottobesoldseparately · 16/07/2019 18:36

Yorkshire.

MoobaaMoobaa · 16/07/2019 18:36

Yorkshire is a county ìn it's own right.
it was originally spilt into Riding.
The North Riding of Yorkshire
The East Riding of Yorkshire
The West Riding of Yorkshire.
There was never a South Riding.

now it's spilt with county councils into 4
north
east
south
west.
we won't talk about when some numpty took part a of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and called it Humberside

lots of other counties are split too so it's no different.

BelindasGleeTeam · 16/07/2019 18:37

I'm a Lancy girl but prefer Cumbria.

Live in S Warwickshire and it's just lovely. I wouldn't go back 'home'. Warwickshire is really accessible for London and Birmingham yet rural and pretty.

MrsMozartMkII · 16/07/2019 18:37

Yorkshire, and Fife (the Kingdom of).

Glitter99x · 16/07/2019 18:44

Somerset where I'm from, often the second choice when compared to Dorset. Here in Somerset we've the cheddar, the cider, and the ploughmans mmmmmm also pretty good weather in Summer like now. We've not had proper rain in months.

Glitter99x · 16/07/2019 18:49

Also my fave city Bath is in Somerset :D I'm from South Somerset but Somerset as a whole gets my vote

weirdquestionhearmeout · 16/07/2019 18:52

1- Devon
2- Cornwall
3- Oxfordshire

TankGirl97 · 16/07/2019 18:53

South Somerset gets my vote too, like Devon but less touristy!
I’ve a soft spot for Herefordshire and Shropshire too though.

DivisionBelles · 16/07/2019 18:58

Cornwall. It's locally known as Kernowfornia for a reason!

Firsttimekittenowner · 16/07/2019 19:04

Another vote for Northumberland. Such a beautiful place.

midgeland · 16/07/2019 19:05

I can't believe there's only 1 vote for Shropshire in 6 pages of this thread. I mean, what does Yorkshire have that beats the countryside around the Stiperstones and the Long Mynd??

I'm willing to consider a joint bid with Herefordshire and Powys since all the nicest bits overlap, and deep down aren't we all a bit Welsh?

EnidButton · 16/07/2019 19:06

Previous poster has a point "best for what?"

If we're talking scenery and landscapes then Cumbria hands down. It's so breathtakingly gorgeous in places that it feels like you stepped into a painting. The light changes throughout the day and sometimes makes the landscape look almost surreal with a hazy glow. You haven't seen all the shades green can be until you've stood on Gummer's How and looked down on the valleys and forests around Windermere. You can easily stand in one place and see forests, fields, mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and the sea just buy turning in a circle. A rugged land that's been softened by water and trees. It's properly fairytale beautiful.

Lancashire.

Decormad38 · 16/07/2019 19:11

West Yorkshire

TheRLodger · 16/07/2019 19:14

Cornwall by far....
Gloucestershire
Lincolnshire
Yorkshire

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 16/07/2019 19:15

London. Hands down.

DoraleeRhodes · 16/07/2019 19:18

Norfolk

GoldenBee · 16/07/2019 19:24

You can't just say 'Yorkshire', say which riding otherwise Lancastrians can include Greater Manchester and Merseyside and ... we win the battle. Yorkshire is so repetitive .. but if samey hills and drystone walls are your thing then so be it. Manchester/Liverpool also better than Leeds. And we have Blackpool.

azulmariposa · 16/07/2019 19:25

Hmmm, Yorkshire or Cornwall. But I don't think I'd want to be in Yorkshire in the winter.
Maybe Norfolk.

To be honest there are so many beautiful parts of the country. It's quite hard to decide.

cheeseismyweakness82 · 16/07/2019 19:25

Ha I knew someone would question Hertfordshire getting a mention, it always gets slated on MN!

In its defence, although I don't think I'd say it was the best county, it has lots going for it, such as:

Some good market towns and very pretty villages
Less pretentious and pricey than other Home Counties like Surrey
Rich history
Excellent connections to a lot of the country for work
Good employment prospects
Many good schools
Lovely countryside- it might not be earth shatteringly beautiful but parts of it are gorgeous, lush and pretty unspoilt.

Personally, I'm also a fan of Yorkshire, Somerset and even though I don't know it, I always think Northumberland sounds beautiful and romantic.
