This is bad isn't it? - House Selling

My mum has had her house on the market since February and is struggling to sell as it's a really unusual home and perhaps not everyone's cup of tea. It is one of 3 houses of the same style on drive and yesterday her NDN said they were also putting their house on the market Shock. It's very similar to my mum's house (same architect designed it). The EA tried to put a positive spin on it and say if people were coming to see NDN it might attract more attention for my mum's but in reality, you'd think they were both selling for some reason wouldn't you? Either something up with the house or something happening in the local area? My poor mum is so stressed about it all and we just want it sold Sad.

Wow, it's amazing. It will sell, it's just such an unusual house you need the right buyer to come along...

pappajonessecretchild · 29/06/2019 21:49

rickandmorts i just started looking at this thread, although you have wiped the link, page 7 has a link as i was just able to click on it and have a look at your mums lovely house.

Justaboy · 29/06/2019 23:04

Well now that i've found it all i can say its a Magic location and an intresting design:)

Would i buy it?, may well consider it at that price its no big deal on the scale were are used to down here that money will get you a terrace 2 up 2 down and hardely anywhere to park;!

Seems to me looking at that area its very impressive the places avaiabele for the money, but i read that huddersfield has had some social problems in recent times?.

EatingBreadAndHoney · 29/06/2019 23:39

I dislike the house from the outside . It's furnished badly, it doesn't make the best of any room and it looks in need of a makeover. Sorry if you were hoping for anything else.

Hodge00079 · 30/06/2019 00:53

I thought it was going to be a hideous busy over personalised house. Pleasant surprise.

Design wise I guess you either like it or don’t. I prefer more traditional but can appreciate the appeal for some.

While the photos show the setting is lovely, not really got a feel of the garden.

There is nothing wrong with the bedrooms. They don’t shine like other rooms. Looking at the photos it isn’t obvious which is the master. The beds at a glance look like singles. People generally like double rooms. So if it looks like space (not crammed in) for one.

Some people might be put off by the wooden ceiling but others will not be bothered. Either think it is ok or that they can paint it.

Tavannach · 30/06/2019 01:06

How big are the "extensive grounds"?

mathanxiety · 30/06/2019 02:15

Furnished badly?
The furnishings are mid-century and completely in keeping with the house style, which is mid-century, in largely original condition. There are people who would weep at the 'made over' house next door that is going on the market

HappyLoneParentDay · 30/06/2019 04:16

Where has the link gone?

ginghamtablecloths · 30/06/2019 08:49

The difficulty with house selling is that it can be so stressful that any little thing can seem like a big thing and just adds to it.
However, it would be galling if NDN gets a buyer first as you'll be worrying whether there's something wrong with your mum's. Try not to obsess about it, like everything else, it's swings and roundabouts. Good luck.

m0therofdragons · 30/06/2019 09:07

Often one neighbour going on the market triggers more because it starts a conversation! We hadn't considered moving until a friend mentioned they were looking. We ended up moving before her and I think she was miffed we "copied". Honestly it just triggered us doing some maths and making a plan that involved a bigger house.

I really wouldn't over think it.

Omfgareyouforreal · 30/06/2019 11:29

@rickandmorts can I see it please? I haven't seen it. I love unusual homes.

Witchend · 30/06/2019 12:04

I'm in the not-for-me category.

I look at that and think immediately "maintenance". Flat roofs need more looking after than sloping, the wooden slats round the sticky out bit will also need watching for rot etc (having lived in one). The dome greenhouse looks lovely but wouldn't want to have one-don't know how easy it would be to get a replacement window, and I'd suspect it'd be more easily swayed by winds etc. Woodland also can be expensive to maintain properly.

But to me the first thought I had when I saw the picture was when the school was expanding and we got random portacabins stuck in random places. That's what that wooden bit looks like to me.

I think you need a better angle for the main picture. At present it looks terribly closed in with little grounds. I know it says in the description "extensive grounds" (although I think acreage might well be a better describer-on the basis of estate agent knowledge that could mean anything!), but it looks like you've got a driveway and small rockery at one end with the back and sides fully woodland. You may well own the woodland, but the picture doesn't tell you that-I'd assume at a glance that it was public woodland (as it would be round here).

Poptasmagorical · 30/06/2019 13:35

I love the house, I love the grounds, I love the decor, but I wouldn’t pay that for Huddersfield. Is your Mum open to offers? (Not from me!)

katewhinesalot · 30/06/2019 13:51

That's a gorgeous house in a lovely setting.

sallyfox · 30/06/2019 13:52

can't find link

katewhinesalot · 30/06/2019 13:54

If I had 500k to spend I'd look at all the houses in that price bracket. How does it compare with those? It's a lovely house but what else could I get for the price instead?

flowergrrl77 · 30/06/2019 23:53

Oh no! I’m late to the party and missed the link!

SophyStantonLacy · 01/07/2019 06:47

@flowergrrl77 you can find it - search Huddersfield, 3 beds, 499

flowergrrl77 · 01/07/2019 07:26

Thanks @SophyStantonLacy I think I found the right one! Such a beautiful location!

Holyshitbags · 01/07/2019 08:36

Wow!!!!!!
Thankyou to whoever posted the guardian link.
That house is AMAZING!! (Not looked inside but who cares what it looks like inside if it’s been preserved then all the better)
I so wish I had half a mill!!! I can’t believe it has hung around - I assume the area is pretty nice - good school links? I can only assume that the price is a bit too steep or that nobody in the Huddersfield area has any taste!!

What a gorgeous unusual house .
I thought open plan was what everyone wanted in a house these days .
Some may think flat roof and maintenance but others wouldn’t give it a second thought.
Perhaps the estate agent should also market it with “planning permission in place to extend”, as they are missing a trick there.
Photos of the garden would also benefit but some of the photos give it quite a sparse look.
I have been nosey on Rightmove and a house with more bedrooms and a flat roof has sold for less , so price maybe an issue but it also looked very homely .
Some people haven’t got vision and just see what is in front of them .
Perhaps your mom should get a different estate agent in as it sounds as if the estate agent she’s got isn’t marketing this property correctly and are just hoping it will sell without their input. Putting it in the Paper hoping people will see it in my mind is not marketing. They should be sending out the details to people on their waiting lists .
Definitely change estate agents.

effiehabb · 02/07/2019 10:18

Wow, I love the house, it's absolutely stunning! Lucky you growing up there, hope your mum manages to sell asap, it can be so stressful Flowers
