How often do you see the GP?

Just a general question - how often on average do you go?
I find myself going once or twice in a month and now conscious that I go too much!

Loads over the last few years before that once every 3 years. I swear I’m falling to bits after pregnancy.
Bit this week and last week I’ve had 4 hospital appointments.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 17/06/2019 16:21

I’m 40. Up until the age of 38 - hardly ever. Years between visits aside from pregnancy. Since then, probably once every couple of months for unrelated problems and I’m currently waiting for two referral appointments.

Getting old I presume.

Once or twice a month is a lot though but as long as you’ve a genuine reason to go I wouldn’t worry and just be grateful it’s free and the point of use.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 17/06/2019 16:22

at the point of use

EL8888 · 17/06/2019 16:22

Very little usually e.g. 3 times in 5 years. The majority of things can be resolved by a trip to the chemists in my experience or practice nurse. I only to see my GP for more serious things or things that require referral to consultants for or sick notes

EskewedBeef · 17/06/2019 16:22

I registered 4 years ago when we moved here, and I haven't yet needed to see a GP. I've seen the practice nurse for a smear and my flu jabs, and she also saw one of my kids when they had a sore eye.

Glitteryfrog · 17/06/2019 16:22

GP - just over 3 years ago and I saw the nurse for a smear test which took 5mins a month or so ago.

tobee · 17/06/2019 16:22

It really does depend on your need surely? I've gone two or three times for a few weeks for one problem a few years ago. I now need annual blood tests, smear every three and hope not go oftener. Usually not.

But if you have a genuine need....

Myusernameismud · 17/06/2019 16:23

I go fairly frequently, as I have a couple of long term conditions but I see the asthma nurse every 6 weeks without fail. She never tries to rush me out the door and always has time to explain things properly. She does thorough checks and I would be absolutely lost without her, as my GPs knowledge of asthma is woefully inadequate.

rosie1959 · 17/06/2019 16:24

About every 10 to 15 years

adaline · 17/06/2019 16:24

I've been twice in three years - once for a smear and once for a blood test.

Before that I'd not been for about three or four years. I think I've maybe been five times since I turned 18.

LenoVentura · 17/06/2019 16:24

Haven't seen a GP for yonks. Saw the practice nurse for dressing changes a couple of times last year when I had a fracture and again in December for smear test.

WhiteLightTrainWreck · 17/06/2019 16:25

Including smear test and booking in with midwife, 4 times last year.
This year I haven't seen my GP, but I've seen the mh nurse and midwife at my GP surgery.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 17/06/2019 16:25

I'm 40 and I go about once a year, and usually it's just for a cert as I've got a flu or cold and needed one for work but don't need medication!

I don't mean to sound nosy but do you have a medical condition that makes you need to go so often?

AquaPris · 17/06/2019 16:29

On average? Once a month? I have contraception, a skin condition and OCD so have to go back all the time. I also constantly get tonsillitis.

PissOffPeppa · 17/06/2019 16:29

When I went through a really bad patch with my mental health it was once or twice a month- medication check ups, being signed off work, referrals for other services.

Before that it was twice in about ten years. In the past year I’ve been three times (all for physical problems).

It depends on your needs and it will change at different points in your life.

elliejjtiny · 17/06/2019 16:34

Once a year for a medication review for my PND. Other than that hardly ever. I had an ear infection about 4 years ago, 6 week check ups with each of the dc and I think she did a couple of my antenatal check ups. That's it.

squirrelclub · 17/06/2019 16:40

Early 30s. Once every 3 years - PGP when I was pregnant and wanted a referral for physio and a green light to take painkillers (co-codamol), and I needed a prescription for a seborrhoeic dermatitis flare recently.

mollyblack · 17/06/2019 16:40

It kind of varies, i wont go for a year then i may go several times in a few months. I have a couple of chronic health conditions.

CMOTDibbler · 17/06/2019 17:02

Twice a year or so - once to get my repeat prescription renewed, and maybe one other visit for something else

Blobby10 · 17/06/2019 17:11

I don't tend to go that often - I tend to self diagnose (usually correctly) and tell them what I need Grin. eg I've had orbital cellulitis 5 times now so when it flared up two months ago I walked in, said "I've got orbital cellulitis and need the 500mg antibiotics as the 250mg ones won't clear it up". Grin. Similarly I have a recurring skin infection just below my nose - I saw a GP April 18 to get some antibiotic cream and when it flared up this April, phoned and asked the receptionist if the doctor would prescribe some more - I collected the prescription at 5pm and filled it at the chemist next door.
saw the nurse for a smear last week but otherwise I'm exceptionally lucky to be healthy enough that I don't need to see a doctor regularly.
Now if you were to ask the question about physio's and chiropractors and sports therapists then that would be an entirely different number Smile

KurriKurri · 17/06/2019 17:16

About once a week - but I've got a chronic health condition that needs constant monitoring - I see a nurse every other day. You see them when you need to. Why do you think you are going too much - are you going when it is unnecessary, or for minor ailments you could get OTC meds for ? If not then you aren't going too much.

Frith2013 · 17/06/2019 18:19

Less than once a year. But then I don’t have any chronic conditions.

TheInvestigator · 17/06/2019 18:21

I havnt gone to the doctors for 6 years (aside from smear test obv).

IntoValhalla · 17/06/2019 18:22

Only if I’m really poorly and all the usual home remedies aren’t touching it.
The last time I saw the GP was about 4 months ago. I’m pregnant with DC3, and had flu symptoms and a hideous cough for about 2 weeks that weren’t going away and pregnancy limited the over-the-counter meds I could take. Turns out I had Whooping Cough Confused

Sirzy · 17/06/2019 18:23

Rarely.

Lots of specialist appointments with ds but even then he rarely goes to the gp
